    Abstract: A method and apparatus for cleaning a paper making felt continuously during the paper making process, and wherein the moving felt is passed through a cleaning bath, and ultrasonic vibrations are applied substantially uniformly across the entire width of the felt while the felt is immersed in the bath, to thereby achieve uniform cleaning of the felt and thus uniformity in the paper produced on the machine. A circulation system for the bath is provided for continuously separating the dislodged fibrous residue therefrom, while retaining the chemicals and heat, and the apparatus includes provision for readily replacing the felt.

    Abstract: A paper-manufacturing machine and method include the feature of detaching a web from a forming wire by utilizing a stationary transfer suction box past which a felt travels while contacting the web so that the latter becomes detached from the forming wire and adheres to the felt while travelling with the latter beyond the forming wire. The felt and web are lapped through a substantial angle around a roll having a recessed surface whiletravelling toward the first press nip of a press section, and at this roll around which the felt and web are lapped a means is provided for directing steam toward the web and through the latter and the felt inwardly toward the recessed surface of the guide roll so that the flowing steam will on the one hand heat water carried by the web to enhance dewatering of the web at the first press nip while on the other hand the steam will serve to maintain the web reliably in engagement with the felt as the latter travels toward the first press nip.

    Abstract: A felt conditioning system is disclosed for use in connection with paper-making apparatus wherein an endless belt of absorbent felt is pressed at a station along the path of belt motion, into contact with a paper sheet in order to de-water the latter. In accordance with the invention, the felt is purged of water and other foeign matter transferred thereto from the paper, by passing the belt around a hollow, foraminous conditioning roll at high speed. Air pressure controlled within selected limits is applied to a portion of the inside surface of the belt in contact with the roll. The combined action of centrifugal force, air pressure and gravity expels the water and foreign matter carried by the belt.

    Abstract: A pulp slurry including pulp made from recycled waste paper is formed into tissue paper in a paper-making machine having an improved calender stack preceded by a conventional drying and creping section. Drying may be completed on a Yankee dryer or the drying may be partial on the Yankee and completed on so-called afterdryers. One or more rolls in the calender stack are cooled to about 90.degree. F by passing liquid coolant therethrough to keep the paper at a temperature below the melting temperature of thermoplastic contaminants in the recycled waste paper so that the contaminants pass through the calender roll in a hardened, nonsticky or less sticky condition. The cooled calender roll is kept dry by an air shower. A continuous doctor on the cooled roll removes any contaminants that adhere to the roll.

    Abstract: Lubrication of a compacting resilient belt used in a web compacting system is facilitated by maintaining a constant depth pool of lubricating liquid between a fluid compactor bar and the inside surface of the belt on the belt approach side of the compactor bar. The compactor bar includes a liquid dam sidewall portion that is provided with liquid overflow weir openings so that the level of the surface of the pool can be automatically maintained at a predetermined height. The belt is used in conjunction with a drum to form a nip space between the outside surface of the belt and a peripheral sector of the drum, the nip space receiving the web to be compacted in the web running direction in a conventional manner, the outside surface of the belt being compressed against the drum by the compactor bar, which bears against the inside surface of the belt while the belt is driven through the nip space.

    Abstract: A twin-wire paper machine and method for operating the same. The machine includes an endless carrier wire and an endless pressure wire respectively extending along closed separate loops and having common run portions between which a web is compressed while travelling from an inlet end to an outlet end of the common run portions. A pair of guide rolls are respectively situated in the loops and engage the wires in advance of the inlet end of the common run portions to direct the wires respectively along converging paths toward the inlet end of the common run portions, these converging wire paths forming an entrance region where a headbox is located for directing a stock jet through a slice defined by a pair of lips of the headbox. A forming board engages one of the wires between the inlet end of the common run portions and the guide roll which engages this one wire, and the stock jet is directed toward this one wire and the forming board engaging the same.

The jets of steam issue from openings in the wall of an enclosure which is situated in close proximity to the said opposite side of the wire, this enclosure having in its interior steam which issues through the openings to form the jets. A plurality of these enclosures may form part of a forming board, and also one or more of the enclosures may be situated along the wire at a part thereof which has travelled beyond the forming board.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for guiding endless woven fabric belts such as are used on paper making machines. Specifically, the instant application teaches the use of a guide shower, which is disposed across the width of the endless belt, to provide the guiding action. The shower comprises a series of nozzles which are adapted to be directed at one edge or the other of the endless belt. Three separate embodiments are disclosed. In one of the embodiments, the shower pipe connecting the nozzles is divided into a left side and a right side. The nozzles on the left side are all directed at the left edge of the endless belt whereas the nozzles on the right side are directed at the right edge of the endless belt. In a second embodiment, two parallel shower pipes are disclosed, the nozzles of one of the shower pipes all being directed at the left edge of the endless belt, the nozzles of the other pipe all being directed at the right edge of the endless belt.
