  • Patent number: 7381302
Abstract: The method and an arrangement are for improved impregnation of chips in association with the manufacture of chemical cellulose pulp. Un-steamed chips are fed into an impregnation vessel (30) in which a fluid level (LIQ_LEV) is established under the highest level (CH_LEV) of the chips. An improved impregnation arrangement for the chips is obtained by the addition of impregnation fluids (BL1/BL2/BL3) with increasing temperatures at different heights (P1, P2, P3), and by the establishment of a counter-flow zone (Z1) in the uppermost part of the impregnation vessel. The requirement for steaming may in this way be dramatically reduced while at the same time the amount of expelled waste gases may be minimized. A major part of the volatile compounds present in the wood are bound to the impregnation fluid (REC) that is withdrawn.

  • Patent number: 7381303
Abstract: Thermomechanical pulp is an important process for producing fibrous mass used in papermaking. A two-level control strategy that stabilizes and optimizes the refining process has been developed. The Stabilization layer consists of a multivariable model predicative range controller that regulates the refiner line operations. The Quality Optimization layer provides the pulp quality control as measured by an online pulp quality (freeness, fibre length) sensor. This control startegy leverages the natural decoupling in the process. The modular design technique is able to handle multiple refiner lines that empty into a common latency chest. A global optimizer is also used to integrate and coordinate the two layers for enhanced constraint handling.

  • Publication number: 20020144795
Abstract: This invention describes a new method to measure kappa number or lignin content of kraft pulps based on the voltammetric measurement of catalytic reactions involving lignin and redox mediators. This method comprises measuring the rate of regeneration of a lignin redox catalyst in the presence of pulp following its oxidation at a voltammetric electrode. The intensity of the catalytic current generated at the electrode surface is shown to be proportional to the amount of lignin present in a pulp. Within pulp types (softwood, hardwood or oxygen delignified) linear relationships can be obtained between the intensities of the generated current and a range of kappa numbers. The redox characteristics and concentration of the mediator, and the voltage sweep rate of the voltammetric procedure, are among parameters that can be tuned to obtained linear relationships with kappa number of various pulps.

Abstract: By establishing a relatively flat, for example, non-sharply conical, top profile of wood chips in a treatment vessel (such as a chip bin), the chips will be more uniformly steamed or otherwise treated (or have the treatment time of the chips extended) compared to if a conventional sharply conical top profile is established in the treatment vessel. The relatively flat top profile of the chips in the treatment vessel is established by utilizing a plurality (typically at least three, and preferably four or more) individually controlled gates (typically having a substantially polygon shape, such as triangular). The gates are mounted below the inlet of chips into a treatment vessel so to deflect, not significantly affect, or substantially preclude the flow of chips past them into the vessel depending upon the positions of each.

  • Patent number: 6132556
Abstract: A method of controlling the pressure of a vertical continuous comminuted cellulosic fibrous material (wood chip) digester is provided using a pressure-control extraction in a zone relatively insensitive to changes in the flow rate of liquid introduction or removal. The method comprises controlling the pressure in the digester primarily (or substantially exclusively) by varying the flow rate of liquor extracted from the pressure-control extraction to maintain the pressure in the digester at a desired superatmospheric level while avoiding non-uniform, unstable material movement in the counter-current washing zone; and introducing dilution liquid into the digester at the at least one recirculation-dilution loop. The pressure-control extraction is preferably substantially the upper extraction in the digester. Substantially except during excessive over pressure and under pressure conditions the extraction flow from the main extraction is maintained substantially constant.

Abstract: The sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity of kraft cooking liquor during kraft cooking of cellulose pulp is selectively increased. After treatment in a first treatment zone in which impregnation or kraft cooking takes place using a kraft cooking liquor having a first sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity, black liquor is extracted from the material, liquid is withdrawn from the material and dilution liquid is added to the withdrawn liquid and the withdrawn liquid with dilution liquid is reintroduced. In a second treatment zone after the first zone a second kraft cooking liquor is introduced having a second sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity greater than the first sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity (typically by about 20-50%), including by manipulating controlling the flow rate of extraction and the flow rates of withdrawal of liquid and addition of dilution liquid.

  • Patent number: 5635025
Abstract: In a continuous digester system the chip feed equipment is greatly simplified by substituting a single vertical vessel for the conventional chip bin, steaming vessel and chip chute. An outlet at the bottom of the single vessel is connected, through a low pressure pump, to the low pressure input of a high pressure transfer device which is connected to a digester (either directly or through an impregnation vessel). A metering device, preferably through a pressure isolation device for maintaining superatmospheric pressure in the vessel, feeds chips into the top of the vessel. A first level, of chips, is established in the vessel and a second, liquid, level below the first level is also established. Steam is supplied to a volume between the top of the vessel and the second level utilizing a conduit with an automatically controlled valve and a temperature controller for at least partially controlling the valve.
