Abstract: In a continuous digester system the digester system is greatly simplified by using a single vertical atmospheric vessel, replacing the conventional chip bin, steaming vessel, chip chute, high pressure pumping or sluice feeders, impregnation vessels and top separator. Chips are simply fed to the top of the atmospheric vessel, and a chip level is established in the vessel. Treatment liquids are added to the vessel such that a total liquid volume (Z1+Z2) with a liquid level (LIQ LEV) is established under the chip level (CH LEV). Impregnation stage and subsequent cooking stages are implemented in the atmospheric vessel at successively increasing temperature and depths into the total liquid volume, thus preventing boiling in the stages and preferably reducing steam blow trough of the chip surface in the top of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 7381302
Abstract: The method and an arrangement are for improved impregnation of chips in association with the manufacture of chemical cellulose pulp. Un-steamed chips are fed into an impregnation vessel (30) in which a fluid level (LIQ_LEV) is established under the highest level (CH_LEV) of the chips. An improved impregnation arrangement for the chips is obtained by the addition of impregnation fluids (BL1/BL2/BL3) with increasing temperatures at different heights (P1, P2, P3), and by the establishment of a counter-flow zone (Z1) in the uppermost part of the impregnation vessel. The requirement for steaming may in this way be dramatically reduced while at the same time the amount of expelled waste gases may be minimized. A major part of the volatile compounds present in the wood are bound to the impregnation fluid (REC) that is withdrawn.

Abstract: A feed system for a cellulose pulp treating vessel (such as a continuous digester) is not limited by the required L/W ratio of the pump feeding a wood chip slurry to a high pressure transfer device, the feed system may be kept at a low temperature to minimize flashing of liquid into steam, and a return conduit from the treatment vessel to the transfer device high pressure inlet may be eliminated. Some of the liquid is removed from the slurry just before the low pressure inlet to the transfer device, and/or just after the high pressure outlet, to reduce the L/W ratio of the slurry by at least 0.25, e.g. from 3.0:1 to 2.25:1 just before the low pressure inlet, and from, 7.0:1 to 5.0:1 substantially immediately after the high pressure outlet.

  • Patent number: 6306252
Abstract: Steam (preferably clean steam) having less noncondensible gases than steam produced by conventional black liquor flashing is produced from hot black liquor from a digester of a pulp mill. A heat exchanger is utilized and the hot black liquor is passed through the heat exchanger in heat exchange contact with an evaporable liquid, preferably clean water. After the water is heated in the heat exchanger it is flashed in at least one flash tank where the heat exchanger is a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger. The heat exchanger may alternatively include an evaporator (such as a falling film evaporator) in which case the black liquor is passed through an inductor before it enters the evaporator. Alternatively, the heat exchanger may be one or more boilers, such as kettle boilers, in which case the black liquor preferably passes through a cooler after the boilers. Heat energy and turpentine recovery are also maximized.

Abstract: Sodium chloride is removed from pulping chemicals used in a Kraft pulping process by the use of a snake-cage polyelectrolyte ion exchange resin, coupled with removal of sulfide prior to treatment, or treatment of chemicals which are already low in sulfide. In one aspect of the invention, dust is collected from exhaust gases produced in the black liquor recovery cycle and is dissolved in water to produce a solution containing sodium chloride and sodium sulfate. The solution is filtered to yield a solid product and a filtrate solution. The filtrate solution is fed to an ion exchange unit which removes chloride and produces a purified sodium sulfate product. The sodium chloride is removed from the ion exchange resin by water elution, and useful recovered chemicals are recycled to the recovery cycle of the Kraft process.

  • Patent number: 5591308
Abstract: An oxygen delignification method and apparatus in which a charge of heated wood pulp is reacted with oxygen in the presence of a charge of caustic soda in a plurality of reaction stages located between mixing stages in which caustic is mixed with the wood pulp. The use of the plurality of mixing stages reduces peak pH exposure of the wood pulp that would otherwise occur if the charges of caustic and wood pulp were mixed all at once. Moreover, the caustic mixed in such manner replenishes neutralized caustic and ensures that the average pH level is increased above that in conventional oxygen delignification. The increase in average pH level favors an increase in the delignification. Filtrate from a washing stage is introduced into the mixing stages to prevent wood pulp degradation.

Abstract: Apparatus for a pulp and paper mill, and methods of acting on liquid effluents produced in the mill, which minimizes the discharge of polluting gaseous and liquid effluents to the environment. Liquid effluents from the bleach plant are concentrated (e.g. evaporated), incinerated (e.g. gasified), leached, crystallized (e.g. freeze crystallized) then washed, and then fed to the plant chemical recovery loop. White liquor produced from the recovery boiler melt is fully oxidized and used in place of caustic in the bleach plant. Essentially all sulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide, caustic, and chlorine dioxide necessary for the pulp mill is produced from mill liquid effluents and gas waste streams, on site at the pulp mill. Typical bleaching sequences that can be used are DE.sub.op D.sub.n D, or AZE.sub.o PZP.
