    Abstract: A method and system for heating a hydraulic digester, such as a single-vessel hydraulic digester, which has a top separator, a level of chips and a liquid phase above the level of chips. The method includes: a. entraining chips in liquor to produce a slurry having a first temperature, b. feeding the slurry of chips to the digester through the top separator, c. supplying direct steam to the liquid phase between the level of chips and the top separator to heat the slurry to a second temperature for the impregnation stage, wherein the steam is fed by using at least one steam injector having a plurality of steam discharge openings; and d. heating the slurry to a third temperature and cooking the chips in a cooking zone, and withdrawing the cooked pulp from the bottom of the digester.

    Abstract: Improvements in a process for rapid acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material and in a hydrolysis reactor, said lignocellulosic material being fed in different levels of a reactor and contacted with flows of lignin organic solvent, water and an extremely dilute solution of a strong inorganic acid, for obtaining a liquid phase of hydrolysis extract and a solid phase of non-reacted and non-dissolved material. A controlled steam flow is injected into the different levels of the reactor, so as to provide adequate temperatures of organic solvent and strong inorganic acid and forming the desired products (sugars). A flow of the liquid phase is recirculated in different levels of the reactor, the remainder thereof being withdrawn from the reactor, abruptly cooled with the solvent submitted to evaporation to obtain a concentrate. The lignin is transferred by decantation and the concentrate is transferred to subsequent process steps.

    Abstract: A method for impregnating chips in a continuous digestion system with an impregnation vessel and a digester. The digestion system has a heat exchanger arranged between a first return line and a black liquor line. The heat exchanger allows a transfer of heat between the two lines. A principal part of the fluid contents of the impregnation vessel is constituted by chips moisture, steam condensate, added white liquor, and the fluid withdrawn from the top separator at the first return line, whereby the impregnation fluid in the impregnation vessel does not contain any substantial amount of black liquor from the digester. An impregnation vessel is established that is hydraulically isolated, in which the flow of fluid and the establishment of its alkali content take place without any influence from the fluid flow in the digester process.

    Abstract: A continuous pulp digester having an elongate horizontally aligned pressure vessel through which the wood chips and digesting fluid flow in a forward direction. In a first and second embodiments within the pressure vessel there is an inner container defining an elongate chamber or passageway having a square cross sectional configuration. In a third embodiment the digesting chamber is cylindrical. At locations along the digester, there are several pair of liquid flow inlets and liquid flow outlets which enable filtrate from a pulp washer and a digesting agent to be moved into and across the digesting chamber to flow out the flow outlets. These are recirculated in a net upstream flow pattern toward the outlet end of the digester, and discharged as black liquor at different locations in the digester.

    Abstract: Chemical cellulose pulp is made from sawdust utilizing a static down-flow retention vessel. By adding steam and cooking liquor to a flow of sawdust a heated slurry, at a cooking temperature of about 250-350° F., is produced. The heated slurry is, at superatmospheric pressure, moved downwardly in the static down-flow retention vessel while cooking temperature is maintained, for a time period of about 0.5-6 (preferably 1 to 3) hours, the slurry having a consistency of about 5-30%. At superatmospheric pressure, without significant reduction in pressure from the retention vessel, the slurry is cooled to well below cooking temperature by diffusing cooling liquid through it, as in a conventional pressure diffuser. The discharge from the retention vessel is preferably substantially solely gravity action (e.g. using a discharge with single convergence and side relief).

The digester may have a first diameter portion (about 3-5 meters) at the top and a second diameter portion (at least about seven meters) below the top, with the inverted separator in the first diameter portion, the liquid level in the first diameter portion, and the chips level in the second diameter portion.

    Abstract: Kraft pulp of increased strength and bleachability may be produced with decreased consumption of effective alkali, and at a lower H factor, by keeping the dissolved organic material (DOM) concentration low substantially through the entire kraft cook, including by extracting high DOM liquid from at least one part of a continuous digester and replacing it with much lower level DOM liquid. Existing pulp mills having two-vessel hydraulic, one-vessel hydraulic, or other systems may be retrofit to provide for extractions and additions of low DOM dilution liquor (including substantially DOM-free white liquor). Also, commercial size batch digesters (8 tons per day of pulp or more) can be operated with low DOM liquor to produce increased strength pulp. Using dilution with low DOM liquor also results in reduced H factor and effective alkali consumption, and increased bleachability.

The replacement liquor may be water, white liquor, pressure heat treated black liquor, washer filtrate, cold blow filtrate, or combinations, or the extracted liquor can be treated to remove or passivate the DOM (e.g. by precipitation, ultrafiltration, or absorption).

    Abstract: An apparatus provide for the production of low kappa number (e.g. below 20) kraft paper pulp, and a low viscosity black liquor which is easily transported to a recovery or disposal stage. Black liquor is withdrawn from the digester and heated about 20-40 degrees C above cooking temperature (e.g. about 170 degrees C), and then introduced into contact with the material in the treatment vessel. After the material is treated with the black liquor, it is withdrawn from the treatment vessel, and passed to the recovery or disposal stage. White liquor may be introduced into the treatment vessel after black liquor withdrawal, after passing in heat exchange relationship with liquid recirculated from an impregnation vessel to a high pressure feeder.

    Abstract: In the production of cellulose pulp (e.g. kraft pulp) utilizing a continuous digester having a number of different feed points for cooking (e.g. white) liquor and utilizing a high pressure feeder, the volume of cool white liquor that is applied to the feed system is reduced compared to conventional processing. This can cause excessive hammering, and damage the high pressure feeder and adjacent piping and equipment. In order to avoid this, liquid being recirculated from the top of the digester back to the high pressure feeder is cooled by passing it into a heat exchanger into heat exchange relationship with a cooler liquid, with the flow of coolant automatically controlled by sensing the temperature of the recirculated liquid. The temperature in the feed system can further be lowered by cooling the cooking liquor before it is added to the pulp slurry, as by passing it to a flash tank so that its temperature is reduced at least 10.degree. C., and the flashed steam can be used in an evaporator.

Each has an annular header associated with it and first and second circumferentially spaced liquid outlets associated with each header. The first outlet for the first screen is generally vertically in line with the first outlet for the second screen, and the second outlet of the first screen is generally vertically in line with the second outlet of the second screen. Simultaneous withdrawal of liquid from the first outlet of the first screen and the second outlet of the second screen takes place, and then is terminated, and then simultaneous withdrawal of liquid from the second outlet of the first screen and the first outlet of the second screen takes place, and then is terminated. This withdrawal sequence is repeated continously.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus provide for the continuous digestion of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material (e.g. wood chips) to produce paper pulp, with increased sulfidity. When black liquor is withdrawn from the continuous digester, instead of merely passing it to a pair of flash tanks and then to recovery, the concentrated liquor from a first flash tank is fed to a vessel in which the comminuted material is slurried with a liquid. Since the black liquor remains in intimate contact with the chips for a significant period of time, the lignin in the chips is partly sulfonized. Ultimately the black liquor is replaced with white liquor or the like, and the separated out black liquor is circulated to recovery or disposal. A high pressure feeder and a solids/liquid separator are utilized.

    Abstract: Extended delignification of kraft pulp in a pressure diffuser allows a pulp mill with a digester (e.g. continuous digester) to increase its production capacity without building a new line, or to decrease its demand in its bleach plant, or to increase the strength of softwood pulp it produces. Comminuted cellulosic fibrous material is kraft cooked to produce kraft pulp having a blow temperature over about 300.degree. F. The pulp is diffusion treated in the first stage of a pressure diffuser to replace the water around the pulp with delignifying liquor. The liquor has a dissolved lignin concentration of less than 12% (optimally less than about 4%), has an effective alkali concentration of at least 2 gm/l (preferably 8-55 gm/l), and a temperature of at least about 300.degree. F. Treating the pulp with the delignifying liquor significantly reduces the K-number (e.g. on the order of about 5). After extended delignification, the pulp is washed in subsequent stages of the pressure diffuser.

    Abstract: A system is provided to produce sugars from a liquid-solid mixture containing biomass, and an acid, wherein the mixture is heated to an appropriate temperature to achieve hydrolysis. The liquid-solid mixture is introduced as a stream into the circular-cylindrical chamber of a cyclone reaction vessel and steam is introduced to the vessel to provide the necessary heat for hydrolysis as well as to establish the liquid-solid mixture in a rotary flow field whereby the liquids and solids of the mixture move along spiral paths within the chamber. The liquid-solid mixture may be introduced at the periphery of the chamber to spiral down toward and be discharged at or near the center of the chamber. Because of differing mass, the solid particles in the mixture move radially inward at a different rate than the liquid and that rate is controlled to maximize the hydrolysis of the solids and to minimize the decomposition of sugars, thus formed.

Hot liquor at the cooking temperature is passed from the top of the heating zone into the bottom of the digester and relatively cool liquor after passage through the digester passes from the top of the digester to the bottom of the heating zone.

The steam vortex maintains a negative relative pressure zone which promotes the dispersion of the stream of chips and the liquor.
