  • Patent number: 7318880
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for defibering recycled fiber material in a drum pulper provided with a substantially horizontal drum. Recycled fiber material and water are fed to the drum pulper and the drum of the drum pulper is simultaneously rotated. When the drum rotates, the recycled fiber material rises up in the rotating drum and finally, due to gravitational force, falls back down. After falling and hitting to the bottom, the recycled fiber material is defibered, forming a fiber pulp mixture with water. A value of at least one parameter describing the defibration process or fiber pulp properties is measured on the basis of the drum pulper or the resultant fiber pulp mixture, and this value is used for controlling the rotation speed of the drum of the drum pulper. The invention also relates to a drum pulper implementing the method of the invention.

Abstract: Headbox transient responses for sheet weight and moisture are modeled as a combination of two sets of time constants and dead time delays. One set represents a shorter delay with faster response dynamics, the fast mode weight and moisture responses, and the other models the longer delay with slower dynamics, the slow mode weight and moisture responses. A counter-vibration impulse generator is connected to the outlet pipe and includes a correcting impulse recorder also connected to the outlet pipe for sensing the vibrations of the flow therepast and for sending a signal to the counter-vibration generator to control the amplitude and/or the frequency of the counter-vibration generator. A further impulse recorder between the stock suspension preparation system and the first mentioned impulse recorder is also connected to the outlet pipe for providing a stock transit time correction signal for correcting the signal of the first mentioned impulse recorder.

  • Patent number: 4692210
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making paper by refining fibrous stock. The stock is passed through an adjustable refining means and a sample of the refined stock is analyzed using a fibre fineness distribution analyzer to produce, over a range of fibre widths, counts of the number of fibres in the sample which have a selected fibre width. Fibre width is plotted against fibre count at intervals of 1 .mu.m over the range of from 7 .mu.m to 64 .mu.m to obtain a fibre fineness distribution curve. The fibre fineness distribution curve is compared with a reference fibre fineness distribution curve obtained by the prior analysis of stock known to have produced paper of desired quality. The refining means is then adjusted to produce a stock the analysis of which produces a distribution curve substantially the same as the reference curve.

  • Patent number: 4661911
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for maintaining a constant refining intensity under varying tonnage rate and applied power conditions to a slurry of paper stock being passed through a disk type refiner. The system utilizes a control strategy and several unique control algorithms which combine to provide a result which relates the speed of rotation of the refiner elements to the power consumed by the drive motor. The present invention is based on intensity which is defined as the net refining power applied divided by the number of bar crossings (refining elements) per unit time. The system is an adaptive control system which operates on the basis of real time measurements of the refiner process.

  • Patent number: 4626318
Abstract: Immediate and accurate control of a pulp refiner is provided so as to control the degree of refining in the production of mechanical pulp, such as RMP, TMP, and CTMP. The mechanical pulp discharged from a refiner is fluidized by a fluidizing centrifugal pump, the fluidizing action instantaneously removing the pulp latent properties. A sample of the latency-removed pulp is then subjected to a pulp freeness measurement, and that freeness measurement is supplied to a computer. The computer utilizes the freeness measurement, as well as other measurements such as pulp consistency and flow rate measurements, and dilution flow measurements, and in response to the inputs control refiner parameters to ensure that the freeness of the mechanical pulp being produced is within the desired range. The refiner parameters controlled can be the hydraulic plate loading (refining pressure), and/or the tonnage of fiber supplied to the refiner.

  • Patent number: 4624745
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the rate at which a defoaming agent is supplied to a processing vessel. A first sensing element senses the quantity of liquid in the vessel. A second sensing element senses the position of the upper surface of the foam. A signal processing circuit combines the outputs of the first and second sensing elements to produce a signal that is used to optimize the rate at which defoaming agent is supplied to the vessel. In this manner, the amount of defoaming agent that is used is reduced, thereby reducing the cost of operating the process.

Abstract: A refiner control continuously calculates required gearmotor output speed in opposition to the main motor drive power such that an increase in main power causes a decrease in gearmotor output speed and therefore provides a variable resolution over the entire power range of the main drive for stable refiner operation at various setpoint levels.

  • Patent number: 4554051
Abstract: A standpipe is connected into a fiber processing system such as a pressurized stock line of a paper making system, containing refined stock, or unrefined pulp, at operating consistencies. Automatic controls cycle a measurement chamber, in the standpipe, through intake measure and exhaust. An imperforate plate mounted across the measurement chamber has at least one hole of predetermined cross dimension, or diameter, substantially equal to the relative length of fiber desired. Automatic timing establishes a set intake time for slurry, or suspension, to pass through the hole and contact lower and/or upper liquid level sensors, or other level indicators, in the chamber. Instantaneous, periodic read out is provided to indicate "too short", "too long" or "correct length" with each cycle. Differential pressure, across the hole, or orifice during measure, as well as approach velocity, is appropriately controlled.

Abstract: Methods of measuring the crill content of pulp suspensions are disclosed. The methods include passing a first light radiation, preferably ultraviolet light, having a wavelength comparable to the particle diameter of the crill, through the pulp suspension, passing a second light radiation having a wavelength longer than the first wavelength but shorter than the mean pulp diameter through the pulp suspension, collecting both light radiations after they have transilluminated the pulp suspension, and measuring absorbencies for both of these collected light radiations so that the crill content can be determined therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4498137
Abstract: A programmable refiner controller which is an improvement over the system described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,184,204 and allows the appropriate ratio to be selected for calculating the correct values of factors P1 and P2 to obtain the proper controller gain while maintaining the transfer function for the consistency range utilized. The maximum energy per ton limit can be established to protect the refining system for over-refining or possibly breaking the disk elements inside the refiner. The controller-ratio or remote set point resolution can be increased in the instrument set point. The invention provides the operator with a control tuned so that the dial on the remote set point module indicates not only the ratio and arbitrary net horsepower days per ton, but the exact energy used per ton of material paper stock.
