Patent number: 6466839Abstract: A system of providing fast machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) basis weight adjustments using a simultaneous multi-point water weight sensor which provides independent MD and CD measurements is described. The water weight sensor is placed under the wire of the sheetmaking machine and provides fast wet end water weight measurements which are converted into predicted dry end basis weight information and used to control operating variables of machine elements in the sheetmaking machine to compensate for high frequency process variations. MD wet end measurements are used to control operating variables of machine elements that influence the MD dry end basis weight and CD wet end measurements are used to control operating variables of machine elements that influence CD dry end basis weight.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2000Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Honeywell-Measurex CorporationInventors: E. Patent number: 6440270Abstract: In controlling the dryer section of a paper machine, the basis weight and moisture of the paper web, the energy fed into the drying cylinders of the dryer section and the machine speed are measured, and then the surface temperature of the drying cylinders is predicted on the basis of the measured values. At the same time, the actual surface temperature of the dryer cylinders is also measured, and if the measured value deviates from the predicted value, any defects in the drying apparatus can be detected quickly. In another aspect, a determination is made of the normal correlation between the power consumption of the drive motors of the cylinders in the drying apparatus and the machine speed. These variables are also measured, and if the correlation of the variables is deviant, it can be concluded that there is a failure in the drying apparatus. In that case it is possible to identify the dryer cylinder where the failure is by measuring the temperature of the cylinders.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Automation OyInventor: Ali Haapanen

Publication number: 20020096296Abstract: The present invention provides a method for controlling a process by calculating a manipulated variable from a deviation between setpoint and control output variables and then using the manipulated variable, wherein the time-series data of the control output variable is subjected to a frequency analysis, the rate of change in the frequency response amplitude of the control output variable in relation to a control gain ratio is determined, and a control gain is adjusted according to the rate of change and the results of the frequency analysis.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 16, 2001Publication date: July 25, 2002Inventor: Takashi Sasaki

Patent number: 6421575Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for controlling a sheet-making process. In the solution, a sheet matching desired values is manufactured. A measuring unit measures the state of the process to produce one or more measurement value representing the state of the process. A comparator compares each measurement value with a corresponding desired value and, on the basis of the comparison, forms an error representing the difference between at least one measurement value and desired value. A control unit forms at least two control action candidates based on the error using at least two process models, of which at least one is a perturbed process model. A processing unit forms one control action from the control action candidates, with which control action the sheet-making process is controlled to produce a sheet matching the desired values.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1999Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Automation OyInventor: John Shakespeare

Patent number: 6413368Abstract: Apparatus and process for producing foam formed fibrous web in which the furnish is made up by mixing a thin water slurry of fibers at a consistency in the range of from about 0.5 to about 7 weight percent fibers with sufficient aqueous foam containing a surfactant and having an air content in the range of from about 55 to about 80 percent by volume to form a foamed fiber furnish containing from about 0.1 to about 3 weight percent fibers which is supplied directly to the forming felt or wire of a twin wire papermaking machine, adding makeup surfactant and discarding excess aqueous foam from the process as required to maintain the desired volume of foamed liquid therein.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Fort James CorporationInventors: John Henry Dwiggins, Dinesh M. Publication number: 20020069991Abstract: A device is provided for dewatering a fabric in which the fabric is used in a papermaking process that exposes it to water before it is directed to the fabric dewatering device. The fabric dewatering device includes leading and trailing guide rolls about which the fabric is partially wrapped to form a loop portion. The loop portion is suspended between the leading and trailing guide rolls and includes a trough portion with a relatively small diameter that is positioned below the axes of the guide rolls. Running the fabric through the trough portion at high speeds exposes the water trapped therein to high centrifugal forces. The centrifugal forces expel the water from the fabric. The geometry and positioning of the trough portion is maintained either through a difference in fabric speed maintained by the leading and trailing nips or by the use of a rider roll positioned within the loop.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2002Publication date: June 13, 2002Applicant: Valmet Karlstad ABInventor: Dennis Edward Jewitt

Patent number: 6368458Abstract: A calender press for use in a paper-making machine includes a top roll positioned adjacent to a nip and rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof. The top roll has a length and circumferential perimeter. The length extends in the direction of and is longer than the width of the fiber web. The top roll is thermally compensated in a plurality of thermal zones which are adjacent to each other across the length of the top roll, whereby the perimeter of the top roll may be adjusted in a locally adjustable manner toward and away from the nip. A bottom roll is positioned adjacent to the top roll and defines the nip with the top roll. The bottom roll is rotatable about a longitudinal axis thereof and has a length and circumferential perimeter. The length extends in the direction of and is longer than the width of the fiber web. The perimeter is smaller at each longitudinal end of the bottom roll and larger at approximately a midpoint between the longitudinal ends, thereby defining a crowned bottom roll.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America, Inc.Inventors: Edwin X.
