Abstract: An applicator device (1) applies surface size to at least one side of a web (W). A pressure effect is applied to the web (W) by subjecting the web (W) to an underpressure and/or to an overpressure such that surface size is forced to penetrate into the pores of the web. Most advantageously, an underpressure is created that sucks applied surface size from the surface of the web (W) into the pores in the inner layers. Surface size is applied to a web first side (W1) and a vacuum effect is applied to the web's opposite side (W2) to cause air to flow through the web (W) such that surface size moves from the first side (W1) in the direction of the second side (W2) into the web (W). Correspondingly, both sides of the web (W) can be treated in successive stages.

The untreated chips are fed without preceding steam treatment into an impregnation vessel (10) that comprises an upper part (11) with a first area and a lower part (13) with a second area A2 that is larger than the first area A1 by a factor of at least r2. The chips establish in the upper part (11) a level (14) of chips that is located at a level (h) above a level (18) of fluid consisting of liquor. The chips after passage of the upper part (11) pass through a transitional part (12), where an increase in area from the first area (A1) to and it is here that the angle of repose of the chips is reduced.

Abstract: A method and an arrangement for treating a web (2) of paper or board is described, in which a functional coating (5) is applied to the web (2) and the web (2) is then calendered. It is wished to obtain a web provided with a functional coating in a cost-effective fashion. This is achieved through the following combination: the functional coating (5) is applied without direct contact, the web (2) is calendered online in conjunction with the application of the coating, calendering takes place in a broad nip (18) in a shoe calender (9), which exhibits a shoe roller (10) with a rotating outer cover (11) and a squeeze roller (14).

Abstract: A machine for producing and treating a web of material including a material web forming device, a dewatering and drying section, at least one application apparatus, a drying device and a processing device. The material web forming device forms a material web continuously from a supplied fibrous suspension. The dewatering and drying section is arranged along a material web path after the material web forming device. The section extracts water from the web by way of at least one of thermal and mechanical action. The at least one application apparatus is arranged along the material web path after the dewatering and drying section. The apparatus applies liquid or pasty application medium to at least one side of the web. The drying device is arranged along the material web path after the application apparatus. The drying device dries the moving material web to a final drying state. The processing device is arranged along the material web path after the drying device.
