  • Patent number: 5587052
Abstract: An apparatus and method for tensioning a fabric in a paper machine, such as a press felt, a drying wire, or an equivalent fabric, including a tensioning roll arranged inside a loop of the fabric. Bearing supports of the roll are fixed, at the driving side and at the operating side of the machine, to sledges. These sledges are displaced by a motor, synchronously in relation to one another, so as to tighten the fabric that runs over the tensioning roll to a certain tension. The sledges are arranged in connection with the frame part of the machine on linear guides, which can be loaded in different directions transverse to the direction of movement of the sledges. In view of displacing the sledges, shafts operated by a motor are journalled on the sledges. The shafts are interconnected by a synchronization shaft between the driving side and the operating side.

  • Patent number: 5584967
Abstract: A twin-wire section with a first and a second endless wire, for forming a fiber material web of a fiber suspension, notably for forming a ply of a multiply paper or cardboard web, the ply being merged on a third wire with a further ply. In the twin-wire zone formed by the first and second wires, a dewatering box (touching the one wire) that features rigid slats is contained in the loop of the one wire, while in the loop of the other wire there are contained several backing slats which can be pushed flexibly on the other wire, while a loop of one of the two wires contains a forming roll which together with said wire forms a looping zone. The forming roll has a smooth, continuous roll shell. The wire which in the looping zone is outside separates from the web and the inner wire at a distance before the end of the looping zone.

  • Patent number: 5582688
Abstract: A twin wire former of a paper machine can perform dewatering gently and symmetrically on the front and back sides of the wet paper, thereby producing paper with good yield and excellent front/back similarity. The twin wire former includes the loops of two wires, and first, second and third dewaterers, having large radii of curvature and disposed inside one and the other of the loops of the wires sequentially alternately between a point where a raw material jet alights on the wires and a couch roll, and the wire-run over this section is diagonal. The first and third dewaterers are disposed inside the loop of the wire and the second dewaterer is disposed inside the loop of the wire. This second dewaterer is pivotable about a point in the vicinity of its rear end, and the couch roll is a solid roll. This couch roll, a transfer suction box and the third dewaterer are mounted on a swing arm and can be pivoted for wire installation.

Abstract: A roll used for tensioning a canvas belt used to hold paper against a dryer. The roll includes a main cylindrical body formed of steel. A layer formed of a metal harder than steel is disposed over the outer surface of the main body. The metal layer is formed with a channel around its center so as to define two spaced roll end sections of a common diameter. • Patent number: 5556512
Abstract: A cross beam in a papermaking machine frame, having a specific overall length is composed of three nested beam elements, namely an outer beam element, a middle beam element and an inner beam element. The middle beam element is at its one end rigidly connected with the outer beam element and on its other end with the inner beam element. The material of the middle beam element, for instance aluminum, has approximately twice the coefficient of thermal expansion as compared to the material of the other beam elements, for instance steel. Therefore, the overall length of the beam remains essentially unchanged if a temperature change entails a length change of the beam elements.

  • Patent number: 5535670
Abstract: A cantileverable roll for use in a roll press, wherein the cantileverable roll cooperates with a backing roll. The cantileverable roll has a rotating surface and is either a solid rotatable roll body or a stationary roll body with a rotatable shell around it. A journal at each end of the cantileverable roll is supported in a respective bearing bracket. At one end of the roll, preferably the drive end, there is a non-rotating extension piece which extends out axially from the roll body and is fastened to the bearing bracket at that end. A tension bar or the like connects the extension piece to a stationary structural part and introduces force in the roll body which compensates for the weight of the roll when the other end of the roll is temporarily unsupported and the roll is cantilevered. The backing roll may also be cantilevered. The various techniques for supporting the one end of the roll by using the coupling element from the extension piece to the frame of the paper making machine are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5480513
Abstract: Method and device for controlling a wire in the forming gap of a twin-wire web former of a paper machine, which gap is defined between two opposite forming wires. A pulp suspension jet is fed out of the discharge opening of the headbox of the paper machine into the forming gap. The jet has a free flight distance before it meets the forming wires. In the area of the forming gap, a variable-crown or adjustable-crown breast roll is employed as the breast roll of at least one of the wires. The deflection of the mantle of this breast roll is regulated actively from inside the mantle of the breast roll. In this manner, the transverse tightness profile of the wire guided by the breast roll and/or possible instabilities of the wire is/are controlled in particular in the area of the forming gap.

  • Patent number: 5400708
Abstract: A roll assembly comprising a rotatable roll (1 in FIG. 2) and a second roll (2 in FIG. 2) cooperating therewith, in which a pressing element (17) to effect displacement between the rolls along a pressure plane of the roll assembly is located in one of the rolls (1,2) and in which both rolls are supported at either end by respective support members (5,6). Prior to operation of the roll assembly, dumbbell-like shaped connecting parts (7) installed in corresponding cut-outs (9) in the support members (5,6) are tensioned and thereby securely form-locked by actuating the pressing element (17). Locking action is released by subsequent deactivation of the pressing element (17) after which the connecting parts (7) can be withdrawn. Two principal advantages of this arrangement, are the compacter construction, enabled by the fact that the frame no longer bears the pressing forces of the roll assembly, and the ease and speed with which components such as rolls, roll jackets or felt belts can be changed.
