  • Patent number: 7351305
Abstract: The digester and method are for the continuous cooking of pulp. At least two withdrawal positions (11E, 11D) for cooking fluid are arranged at different heights in the digester (10). The cooking fluid in the first and second position is withdrawn after the chips have had a retention time that differs by at least 10 minutes. The differential pressure between the positions is determined and when this exceeds a pre-determined level, a connection (17E) opens between these positions, establishing a flow parallel to a flow of cooking fluid between these positions in the digester. Several withdrawal positions are preferably connected in a common shunt system (17A-17F), with valves (18A-18F), controlled by the differential pressure, that are located between adjacent positions.

  • Patent number: 7318880
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for defibering recycled fiber material in a drum pulper provided with a substantially horizontal drum. Recycled fiber material and water are fed to the drum pulper and the drum of the drum pulper is simultaneously rotated. When the drum rotates, the recycled fiber material rises up in the rotating drum and finally, due to gravitational force, falls back down. After falling and hitting to the bottom, the recycled fiber material is defibered, forming a fiber pulp mixture with water. A value of at least one parameter describing the defibration process or fiber pulp properties is measured on the basis of the drum pulper or the resultant fiber pulp mixture, and this value is used for controlling the rotation speed of the drum of the drum pulper. The invention also relates to a drum pulper implementing the method of the invention.

Abstract: Method for enabling the paper pulp production process to be controlled in such a way that the hexenuronic acid content in the pulp can be minimized and the color reversion of the pulp and/or the pulp products thereby minimized. The method is based on measurements of the optical properties of a fiber containing substance or process stream in the wavelength region 232±5 nm and another wavelength interval. The content of the hexenuronic acid content that is determined by the analysis is then used for controlling conditions in the process stage.

The invention comprises determining flow amount and consistency of the pulp supplied to the screening phase and, correspondingly, of the reject removed therefrom, and calculating a passage ratio of the reject and the supplied pulp by means of the flow amounts and consistency values verified through the measurement, and adjusting the screening phase according to said passage ratio.

Abstract: Chemical species (e.g., metaborate, carbonate, hydroxide and sulfide) in a boron-containing alkaline wood pulping liquor sample are determined quantitatively by (i) subjecting a first aliquot portion of the sample to a primary acid titration analysis to derive multiple equivalence points at different respective pH values; (ii) subjecting a second aliquot portion of the sample to an analysis to determine the quantitative presence of boron or sulfide ions therein, and then (iii) determining the quantitative presence in the sample of at least one of the chemical species. Wood pulping parameters may thus be determined on the basis of the quantitative presence of the chemical species to assist in process and/or quality control of the wood pulping operation.

Abstract: Method for enabling the paper pulp production process to be controlled in such a way that the hexenuronic acid content in the pulp can be minimized and the colour reversion of the pulp and/or the pulp products thereby minimized. The method is based on measurements of the optical properties of a fibre-containing substance or process stream in the wave length region 232±5 nm and another wavelength interval. A significant value for the current hexenuronic acid content is formed by correcting the intensity in the spectrum around 232 by the corresponding optical quantity at the other wavelength interval. The content of the hexenuronic acid content which is determined by the analysis is then used for controlling conditions in the process stage.

A sample of the pulp is formed into a sheet, and bleed-throughs are created from the contaminants therein by hot-pressing the sheet. A dye is applied to the sheet, to enhance contrast between areas of the sheet having bleed-throughs and areas of the sheet not having bleed-throughs. The contrasted sheet is analyzed to determine the quantity of contaminants that create bleed-throughs.

Abstract: A system and method for rapidly determining the pulp kappa number through direct measurement of the potassium permanganate concentration in a pulp-permanganate solution using spectrophotometry. Specifically, the present invention uses strong acidification to carry out the pulp-permanganate oxidation reaction in the pulp-permanganate solution to prevent the precipitation of manganese dioxide (MnO2). Consequently, spectral interference from the precipitated MnO2 is eliminated and the oxidation reaction becomes dominant. The spectral intensity of the oxidation reaction is then analyzed to determine the pulp kappa number.

Abstract: In the feeding of a slurry of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material to a digester (continuous or batch) in the production of chemical pulp, one of the tanks used in the feed system (which preferably includes a high pressure feeder) may be eliminated without consequent loss of its function by providing a single tank with the combined functions of controlling the level of liquid in a slurrying conduit which supplies slurry to a slurry pump, and storing and substantially continuously supplying liquid to a make-up liquid pump connected to the digester. The single tank preferably surrounds the slurrying conduit and is substantially concentric, and in liquid communication, with it. A gap of 3-48 inches may be provided between the bottom of the conduit and a connection to the slurry pump. A screen or strainer may be provided in the gap, which is substantially surrounded by the tank.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system that adjusts the operational parameters of a fiber filter apparatus to keep measured properties indicative of paper quality, such as the paper's porosity, within desired value ranges. A feedback loop may be set up in which input properties are read, such as the paper's porosity and the pollution content of the filtrate leaving the fiber filter. These inputs go into a predictive model that determines how to adjust the fiber filter's operational parameters in order to move the measured paper quality properties into their desired value ranges while accommodating other constraints on the fiber filter's operation. The model looks at positive and negative correlations between the operational parameters and the measured inputs. Having processed the inputs and predicted an outcome, the predictive model directs controllers to change the operational parameters of the fiber filter. The input properties are again read, and the feedback loop is repeated.

Abstract: The invention relates to an improved method for controlling the cooking temperature in a continuous vapour phase digester for chip-shaped cellulose material. According to the invention high pressure can be established in the vapour phase largely by means of steam, without risk of attaining excessively high temperatures in the cooking. Nor is there any risk of foaming incurred in connection with pressure relief of pressurized cooking liquor, which often ensues in vapour phase digesters when the pressure is maintained by means of air supplied to the vapour phase. These problems are effectively avoided by introducing a temperature-controlled supply of cooking liquor in close proximity to the surface of the liquor level, as a result of which a protective liquor surface with a temperature lower than the vapour phase can be obtained.
