Abstract: The current invention replaces the toggle clamping mechanism of known die casting machines with a hydraulic clamping mechanism. Advantageously, the machine with hydraulic clamps requires less space than the machines utilizing toggle clamping mechanisms. The machine of this invention has a significantly smaller footprint, takes up less space and is about 30% shorter than machines with toggle clamps. The hydraulic clamping mechanism of the current invention not only decreases the size of the casting machine, but also produces uniform clamping force. • Patent number: 5365997
Abstract: A method for preparing an engine block casting having integral cylinder bore liners (10). A barrel slab core (14) includes barrel cores (18). Bore liners (10) surround the barrel cores (18) and are fixed in relation to the barrel slab core (14). A cylinder block mold core package (22) is assembled from the barrel slab core (14), and other cores (24, 26, 28). The liners (10) are heated while they are within the cylinder block mold core package (22) by induction heating. Access holes (30) are defined within the barrel slab core (14), each access hole (30) communicating with the interior of one barrel core (18). A heater (32) is inserted through each access hole (30). Thermal energy is thus transferred across the barrel core (18) to the cylinder bore liner (10) to assure optimum integrity of bonding between a solidified cylinder block casting and the cylinder bore liners (10). The heaters (32) are then retracted before adding the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 5325908
Abstract: A casting machine having a mold closing and opening cylinder for moving a movable die plate with a movable die relative to a stationary die plate having a stationary die, and a mold clamping cylinder each having a cylinder housing and a piston which partially define a first and a second fluid chamber whose volumes increase when the movable die plate is moved toward and away from the stationary die plate, respectively, by the mold closing cylinder. The clamping cylinder is connected to a hydraulic circuit, which permits a fluid to flow between the first and second chambers through a connecting line when the movable and stationary die plates are moved relative to each other by the closing and opening cylinder. The hydraulic circuit is adapted to apply a fluid pressure to the first fluid chamber to clamp the movable and stationary dies together after the movable die is brought into abutting contact with the stationary die by the closing and opening cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5078202
Abstract: This disclosure concerns dies for die casting machines having a stationary or cover die and a movable or ejector die which has a movable slide mounted thereon. A tapered trough is provided across the slide and into opposite sides of the movable die, and the cover die is provided with a floating wedge that fits into the full length of this trough for positioning and locking the slide with respect to the movable die on which this slide is mounted. The floating wedge may be held in the cover die by flanges on the wedge which loosely fit in grooves in the cover die. The tapers on the wedge and the sides of the trough are complimentary for locking the movable die parts together when all the die parts are closed for filling the cavity formed by the die parts with molten metal.

  • Patent number: 5035606
Abstract: A high tonnage reaction injection molding (RIM) press has fixed and movable platens for clamping a composite mold therebetween at a closed mold position. A plurality of high pressure hydraulic cylinders are mounted on a carrier for the movable platen, and a locking mechanism having a plurality of incrementally spaced locking positions is effective to lock the carrier selectively at said positions. A pair of low power hydraulic piston-cylinder assemblies connected with the carrier adjacent to its opposite ends move the carrier and movable platen to the closed position. Short stroke connecting rods operated by the high pressure cylinders are forced independently of each other into high tonnage engagement with the movable platen at a plurality of locations within the area of the composite mold to clamp the latter between the platens and positively seal its junctures, whereupon a RIM mix head injects the high pressure reactive chemicals into the sealed mold.

  • Patent number: 4984980
Abstract: A mold clamping apparatus includes a stationary platen, a movable platen, a driving device, a rotational-linear motion transmission mechanism, a braking device, and a mold clamping force applying mechanism. The stationary platen is arranged on a frame and mounts a stationary metal mold for a molding machine. The movable platen is arranged to oppose the stationary platen to move forward/backward with respect to the stationary platen and mounts a movable metal mold. The driving device moves the movable platen forward/backward with respect to the stationary platen. The rotational-linear motion transmission mechanism is arranged between the driving device and the movable platen and converts a rotational torque of the driving device into a linear motion in a moving direction of the movable platen. The braking device is connected to the driving device and brakes a linear motion of the movable platen toward the stationary platen at the end of the linear motion.

  • Patent number: 4947925
Abstract: The mold is equipped with a casting ring 6 which is formed by clamping together four generally rectilinear wall segments 8 that are, first, arranged like the sides of a picture frame about the rabbet 52 of a rectangular case 10, and then abutted together, sash-like, at their mitered ends 80, to form a ring, the casting surface 9 of which will produce the rectangular cross-sectional outline common to sheet ingot or the like, when molten metal is fed through the ring. The clamping action is produced by a set of screws 94 at the corners 10' of the case, and after the ring 6 is clamped about a pair of spaced, axially opposing lips 54 and 60 on the case and an annular plate 14 thereabove, the plate 14 is clamped to the top of the case, to secure the ring in place and seal the axial ends of the ring against fluid flow thereacross.

  • Patent number: 4881715
Abstract: A mold which comprises a pair of mating, openable and closeable mold halves and a lock to hold the mold halves together. The lock is defined by a recess in the outer surface of one of the mold halves. A lifting bridge crosses the recess, being proportioned to permit a lifting hook in the recess to pass underneath to engage the bridge. An elongated member is secured to the other of the mold halves, being slidably extendable into the recess when the mold halves are substantially closed. The elongated member defines a longitudinal slot facing outwardly of the recess in closed position to receive at least a portion of the lifting hook as the hook engages the bridge. The slot defines an end opposed to the other mold half which is closed, to prevent a hook portion in the slot from sliding past the opposed end. Thus, the mold in closed position cannot be opened while the lifting hook is present in the slot.
