Patent number: 5348070Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the compression of molding sand in casting molds having a pattern plate with a pattern arranged therein. The molding sand is introduced loosely into the molding space located above the pattern plate and is thereafter fluidized to a final pressure of 20 bar maximum by means of a compressed-air surge acting on the molding sand followed by compression, by mechanical pressing. The process of the present invention provides a smooth pressure surge which is subdivided into at least a two part gradient in its pressure-rise time curve, so that the first part of the pressure-rise gradient takes place from 0.3 to 18 bar/sec to a pressure P.sub.1 and the second part has an increased pressure-rise gradient which takes place from 18 to 95 bar/sec. to a pressure P.sub.2 where P.sub.1 <P.sub.2 .ltoreq.20 bar. Subsequently, the P.sub.2 pressure is reduced in an essentially controlled manner, with a pressure-reduction gradient of a minimum of 3 bar/sec.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1993Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Georg Fischer AGInventors: Kurt Fischer, Hans Leutwiler

Patent number: 5332025Abstract: In producing casting molds or mold parts by compacting mold sand in a molding chamber between two pattern plates, the volume of the molding chamber is measured and/or computed, such as by using sensors and a timer/controller capable of computing, before and after the compacting step. The values obtained are used to calculate a compaction ratio which is compared with a desired compaction ratio as a basis for making adjustments to the starting conditions, before the next mold or mold part is produced. In this manner it is possible to achieve a continuous correction of the compacting ratio to form correctly sized molds or mold parts in a series.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1992Date of Patent: July 26, 1994Assignee: Dansk Industri Syndikat A/SInventor: Jens P. Patent number: 5161603Abstract: A molding chamber (7) accommodating pattern plates (24, 25) is supplied by a steam of air with sand mixture delivered in a direction parallel to the pattern plates (24, 25). After a time delay relative to the start of the sand delivery operation, and sand mixture is preliminarily compacted by delivering a stream of compressed air directly into the molding chamber in a direction parallel to the pattern plates, the delivery of compressed air being continued within a period of time equal to 5 to 30 percent of the duration of the sand mixture delivery operation. As a result of the delivery of compressed air, the delivery of the sand mixture is retarded and even interrupted. The stream of compressed air diverts the sand mixture in the molding chamber towards the pattern plates, thus providing a better filling of narrow deep hollows on pattern surfaces and preliminary compaction of the sand mixture. The sand delivery operation is completed after the end of the preliminary compaction.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1991Date of Patent: November 10, 1992Inventors: Anatoly A. Volkomich, Nikolai K. Patent number: 4947923Abstract: The method and apparatus are based on the use of a casting process in which expendable patterns are made of a low density material, then evaporated by molten metal as the metal advances into the cavity created by the evaporation of the pattern material. The outer supporting material of the cavity is an unbonded granular material of sufficient grain size distribution. This unbonded material is vibrated in defined partial volumes of the whole volume of a holding vessel called a pouring container and compacted to a predetermined density around the expendable pattern so that it fills all cavities of the expendable pattern prior to the introduction of molten metal into the container to displace the pattern. The compacting vibration is performed in several independent zones to achieve uniform compaction and to prevent pattern deformation. The pouring container follows a loop via a conveyor system preferably through four operation stations.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1988Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Inventor: Leslie D. Rikker

Patent number: 4750540Abstract: Foundry molding material is poured or pneumatically infed into a mold frame arrangement containing at least one pattern, a molding frame and a filling frame. Subsequently, the foundry molding material is compacted by a compacting arrangement containing, for example, any one of a compressed-air surge compacting device, a combustion-force surge compacting device, a pressure compacting device, a vibrational compacting device or a combined pressure-and-vibrational compacting device. Also during such compacting operation at least the predominant portion of the foundry molding material contained in the filling frame is displaced into the molding frame. During such compacting operation a preselected expanding gas is infed into predetermined local regions of the foundry molding material while such material is being compacted. As a result, there are formed zones of reduced packing density in the foundry molding material.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1986Date of Patent: June 14, 1988Assignee: Georg Fischer AGInventor: Dietmar Boenisch
