Patent number: 6923239Abstract: The use of green sand is eliminated by replacing green sand molds with all core sand assemblies that provide, during casting, both the internal and external surfaces of a casting, such as a cylinder head or engine block. In the process, a mold is formed from the same core sand that is used to form the core elements defining the internal passageways of the casting. A mold-core carrier is constructed with downwardly converging sides that hold assembled mold and core elements together, without fasteners, during transportation and pouring of the molten iron alloy into the mold-core assembly and the cooling period to form the casting. After the casting is formed, the core sand from both the mold elements and core elements is recovered, and may be recycled and processed to form further mold elements or core elements or both.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2003Date of Patent: August 2, 2005Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Billy J. Cagle, Paul E. Flick, Arthur D. Parks, Edward A. Reelfs

Patent number: 6644381Abstract: The use of green sand is eliminated by replacing green sand molds with all core sand assemblies that provide, during casting, both the internal and external surfaces of a casting, such as a cylinder head or engine block. In the process, a mold is formed from the same core sand that is used to form the core elements defining the internal passageways of the casting. A mold-core carrier is constructed with tapered sides that hold the assembled mold and core elements together during pouring of the molten iron alloy into the mold-core assembly and the cooling period to form the casting. Although the carrier sides can use a refractory liner, preferably the sides are made of replaceable sheet metal backed by an open structural framework to enhance cooling of the casting. After the casting is formed, the core sand from both the mold elements and the core elements is recovered, and may recycled and processed to form further mold elements or core elements or both.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Billy J. Patent number: 6206082Abstract: A molding machine for producing a mold by applying external force of either pressurized air or mechanical compaction or both to molding sand (12) that is held in a mold space is disclosed. The mold space is defined by a master plate (9), which has a pattern (8), and a flask (7). The molding machine includes a lifter table (11) for vertically carrying the master plate (9) and the flask (7), a filling frame (4) disposed for vertical movement above the lifter table (10), and a reinforcing frame (5) disposed for vertical movement between the filling frame (4) and the lifter table (10). The reinforcing frame (5) and the flask (7) are adapted to approach each other such that the reinforcing frame (5) contacts the outer surface of the flask (7) to reinforce it.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1998Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Sintokogio, Ltd.Inventor: Masamoto Naito

Patent number: 5048593Abstract: The apparatus consists of a weight iron (1) with a plane bottom face designed to rest on the top side (3) of the upper mold of a two part sand mold set (2,6), and a clamping plate (4, 5) located at either side of the closed mold parts (2, 6). The bottom face (7) of the lower mold (6) rests on a transport device (8). The apparatus also includes L-shaped arms (9, 10), which pivot with respect to the weight iron (1) and the two side clamping plates (4, 5). The two L-shaped arms (9, 10) are placed opposite to each other in a vertical plane through the mold parts (2, 6). The arms (9, 10) are laterally off-set and pivot with the weight iron (1) at points (16, 17).Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1990Date of Patent: September 17, 1991Assignee: Dansk Industri Syndikat A/SInventor: Anders Mortensen

Patent number: 4522248Abstract: A mold weight for use with foundry sand molds comprises a frame assemblage including a pair of spaced frame members connected by rods. A plurality of segmental weight elements are disposed between the frame members and carried by the rods. The weight elements are further disposed to avoid the area of the mold surface that contains the down sprues. The frame members and weight elements are movable, within limits relative to the connecting rods and to each other. Weight elements are made available in a plurality of lengths so that the mold weight configuration can be varied in contemplation of sand molds requiring different down sprue locations.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1982Date of Patent: June 11, 1985Assignee: Vulcan Engineering Co.Inventor: Wilmer J. Friesen

Patent number: 4422495Abstract: A mold handling system and method wherein cars are moved along a closed vertical loop. A first elevator positions an empty car adjacent a mold-supply conveyor, whereupon a mold is pushed onto the car, after which the car is transferred into a pre-pour mold storage. The mold-bearing car is then moved onto a second elevator which lifts the car upwardly adjacent an elevated pouring deck. As the mold is elevated, a jacket and weight are automatically deposited thereon, and the mold is poured while the car rests on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is then moved forwardly through a jacket-and-weight transfer station, after which the jacket and weight are automatically removed and recycled back for positioning on another mold arriving on the second elevator. The mold-bearing car is moved through a cooling region, and this is then transferred onto a third elevator which is tiltable so that the mold is dumped from the car.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1981Date of Patent: December 27, 1983Assignee: Joseph B. Stinson Co.Inventor: Adair B. Van Nette, III

Patent number: 4291745Abstract: A foundry mold jacket to be positioned around a sand mold during pouring of the molten metal. The jacket has a generally rectangular body portion having a central opening to receive the sand mold. The jacket has a depth of approximately six inches and straddles the parting line of the mold. Extensions or lugs extend outwardly from opposite sides of the body portion and locating members are disposed on the upper surfaces of the extensions for positioning a weight on the upper surface of the jacket body. In addition, the extensions are provided with locating holes which receive locating pins on lifting arms that raise and lower the mold jacket relative to the sand mold.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1979Date of Patent: September 29, 1981Assignee: Grede Foundries, Inc.Inventor: Willard R. Patent number: 4063586Abstract: A mold forming machine for the production of casting molds wherein molding sand is compressed within mold flasks is provided with stabilizing means for counteracting the effects of the compressive forces generated within the mold flask during compression of the molding sand tending to cause distortion of the flask. The stabilizing means include a movable frame which is adapted to extend about a molding flask placed in the machine with the frame being positioned relative to the flask by lifting gears which move the frame in accordance with the various stages of operation of the machine. A plurality of fluid pressure actuated tensioning elements are mounted on the frame to be movable therewith. The tensioning elements are adapted to apply compressive forces inwardly of the mold flasks during application of the molding sand compressing forces.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1977Date of Patent: December 20, 1977Assignee: Erwin BuhrerInventor: Franz Keller
