  • Patent number: 4250949
Abstract: A semicontinuous casting apparatus comprises a mould positioned above a secondary-cooling chamber which accommodates a dummy bar having a thickened portion and a body made in the form of a hydraulic cylinder intended to pull out a casting and mounted to move lengthwise of said chamber. For the dummy bar to be able to move, the apparatus is provided with alternately actuated index pins. The pins are fixed on stationary mounted legs and extend through openings in the walls of the secondary cooling chamber and cooperate with openings provided in the lateral sides of the thickened portion and body of the dummy bar.

  • Patent number: 4222431
Abstract: Aluminium and other non-ferrous metals are continuously cast in the form of a thin strip in a thickness range of 5-30 mm through an open-ended casting mould. The emerging strip is cooled in conventional manner by direct application of coolant as it emerges from the mould. The novel feature is that the solidified strip is gripped at its side edges at a station close to the exit of the mould and positively pulled out of the mould.

  • Patent number: 4190095
Abstract: Improvement in the method for making metal filament by depositing molten metal onto the peripheral surface of a rotating annular chill roll and separating the solid filament from the chill roll, which involves applying tension to the filament, after it has been separated from the chill roll, along the direction of a tangent to the chill roll past the point at which the filament separates from the chill roll by centrifugal action, to thereby prolong its contact with the chill roll. Apparatus is provided for practice of the method.

  • Patent number: 4178985
Abstract: Installation for manufacturing wire by projecting a jet of electrically conductive metallic liquid through a die into a cooling medium, comprising a crucible equipped with a heating device, a die and an enclosure containing a gas under pressure, an enclosure containing a cooling medium and a wire-receiving device is improved by providing the installation with a thermally and electrically conductive immobile hot piece arranged in such a manner as to debouch into the section of a crucible passageway which is wetted by the metallic liquid, occupies that section and is in contact with a cooling element and with one of the poles of a source of electric current, while an electrically conductive cold piece is connected to the other pole of the source of electric current and assures electrical contact with the jet or the wire.

  • Patent number: 4129173
Abstract: A continuous casting plant has a frame-shaped lifting table, a mould insertable in the lifting table, and a strand guide device following the mould and including strand guide parts. The strand guide part following the mould is surrounded by a carrying frame, and this strand guide part and the carrying frame are installable in and removable from the continuous casting plant together. The carrying frame is arranged with play in the lifting table and is vertically movable therethrough together with the pertaining strand guide part. On the mould and on the carrying frame, supporting faces opposing each other with play are provided and can engage each other when the carrying frame is lifted.

  • Patent number: 4116598
Abstract: Apparatus for producing high-melting-metal-oxide-based crystalline materials by melting a charge under the effect of a high-frequency electromagnetic field with the charge melting zone being maintained constant, the charge being loaded continuously and obtained crystalline material being withdrawn also continuously. The apparatus is a cooled mould, whose body is shaped as a truncated cone with an angle between its generatrix and cone height ranging from 2.degree. to 10.degree., and an induction coil encompassing the body of the cooled mould in the region of location of the constant melting zone.

  • Patent number: 4106549
Abstract: An arrangement for transporting away strand pieces, in particular crop ends cut off in continuous casting plants with a cutting means has a conveying roller path following the cutting device a cut strand discharge apparatus comprised of a plurality of arms pivotable over at least part of their length from a horizontal pick-up position into a tilted dropping position, and a lifting table carrying at least one conveying roller. The lifting table is perpendicularly displaceable relative to the conveying-roller-path plane. An inclined sliding path extending transversely to the strand guide is formed when the lifting table has been lowered and the arms are pressed into the tilted position by the weight of the cut off strand piece.

  • Patent number: 4091862
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed comprising a strand guide formed by guide plates which are supported and cooled by hydrostatic support elements. The support elements each include a cylinder and a piston which is stressed against the guide plate by pressure fluid supplied to the cylinder. The pistons are each provided with a bearing pad having a plurality of recesses each supplied with fluid at a constant rate which forms hydrostatic support for and cools the guide plates. The forces exerted by the support elements may be controlled by pressure regulating valves in the fluid supply lines leading thereto in response to sensors which sense positional shifts of the guide plates from a set point. The apparatus may also include a controller for the valves which periodically reduces the pressure of the fluid supplied to the support elements sufficiently to allow the casting to move along the strand guide.
