Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for electromagnetic stirring during a continuous casting process, especially for casting a billet and bloom of medium and high carbon steels. The method and apparatus provide a higher surface quality of the ingot, reduce the entrapping of nonmetallic inclusions into the ingot, and suppress issues regarding central segregation and central porosity. The method provides an improvement in the stirring process from the meniscus to the crater end—and relates to in-mold stirring and stirring in a zone of secondary cooling and up to the crater end. The in-mold stirring is geared towards the suppression of meniscus disturbance, for submerged casting, in particular, the reducing of helical and axial velocity components of the molten steel, the lowering of the initial solidification point to avoid the touching of a shell edge with the slag ring, and a decrease of oscillation marks.

Abstract: During continuous casting of metals, a non-moving, vibrating magnetic field is applied to a molten metal in a casting mold to impose only vibration on the molten metal. This continuous casting method can produce a cast slab much less susceptible to flux entrainment, capture of bubbles and non-metal inclusions near the surface of the molten metal, and surface segregation. The magnetic field is preferably produced by arranging electromagnets in an opposing relation on both sides of the mold to lie side by side in the direction of longitudinal width of the mold, and supplying a single-phase AC current to each coil. The single-phase AC current preferably has frequency of 0.10 to 60 Hz. A static magnetic field can be applied intermittently in the direction of thickness of a cast slab. This technique can produce a cast slab substantially free from the flux entrainment and the surface segregation. Preferably, the static magnetic field is intermittently applied under setting of an on-time t1=0.

  • Patent number: 5746268
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for continuously casting a metal slab made of steel are provided for uniformly circulating molten metal on a meniscus in a mold. The cast metal slab has no surface defect such as a slitting. On the meniscus, the method and apparatus operates to generate electromagnetic stirring thrusts along two long mold sides, these thrusts being opposed to each other. The thrust oriented from a dipping nozzle to the short mold side is made larger than the thrust oriented from the short mold side to the dipping nozzle. A circuit for connecting each coil of a shifting field electromagnetic stirring coil part with a three-phase power supply is symmetric to another circuit with respect to the dipping nozzle. The circuit is divided into two parts along each long mold side. The divided circuit parts are located in parallel but have respective impedances.

  • Patent number: 5743324
Abstract: A downstream connection block (GB) constituted by connector halves (FB1) is electrically connected in permanent manner to a moving assembly (EB). An upstream connection block (GA) is electrically connected in permanent manner to a stationary power supply block (BA) by flexible conductors (CA). A carriage (K) transfers the upstream block (GA) alternately between a front position (PB) providing electrical connection enabling the moving assembly to be powered, and a rear position (PA) remote from the downstream block (GB). The carriage separates from the upstream block when it is to leave said block in said front position. The invention is particularly applicable to electrically powering electromagnetic stirring inductors carried by an oscillating mold in a continuous steel casting installation.

  • Patent number: 5699850
Abstract: An induction stirring method wherein molten metal is electromagnetically stirred during continuous casting in a mold includes control of velocity of the stirring motion at the meniscus and the region adjacent to it, either to decrease or enhance the stirring of the molten metal produced by the main electromagnetic stirrer. An A.C. magnetic stirring modifier is positioned adjacent the region of meniscus to produce electromagnetic stirring of the molten metal at the meniscus, either to oppose the rotary motion of the main electromagnetic stirrer and provide a surface free from the stirring motion or to enhance the rotary stirring motion of the main magnetic stirrer. These two alternative modes of operation permit a casting machine to be used for casting molten metals requiring widely varying operating conditions.
