Abstract: An aluminum base part is composed of a forging cast product produced by a forging cast process and a nickel chromium plating layer formed on the forging cast product. The nickel chromium plating layer is composed of a semibright nickel plating layer formed on the forging cast product and having a thickness of 5 to 10 ?m, a bright nickel plating layer 33 formed on the semibright nickel plating layer 31 and having a thickness of 5 to 10 ?m, and a chromium plating layer 37 formed on the bright nickel plating layer 33 and having a thickness of 0.5 to 3 ?m. The present invention adopts a forging cast product rather than a cast product. The forging cast product has a smooth surface, so that a plating layer can be directly formed on the surface of the forging cast product without forming an undercoat resin layer.

Abstract: There is provided a magnesium alloy member having mechanical properties and corrosion resistance and a method of manufacturing the magnesium alloy member. A magnesium alloy member has a base material made of a magnesium alloy, and an anticorrosive film formed on the base material. The base material is a rolled magnesium alloy including 5 to 11% by mass of Al. By using a base material including a large amount of Al, a magnesium alloy member having excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance can be produced. In addition, by using a rolled material, the number of surface defects at the time of casting is small, and the frequency of compensation processes such as undercoating and puttying can be reduced.

Abstract: A forging apparatus and a forging method for rheo-casting are disclosed, in which primary rheo-casting using an upper mold and a lower mold, casting of a hub region of a product material using a first roller unit and casting of a rim region of the product material using a second roller unit are accomplished in series, enabling vehicular wheels having relatively complex shapes to be cast via a single casting process. Further, the product material includes wrought 6000 series aluminum alloys, which are easy to process and have relatively high strength and low weight, thus being suitable for the manufacture of vehicular wheels having complex shapes. Furthermore, recycling of the product material is possible.

Abstract: A method for arthroplasty includes using a self-locking prosthesis that has a member structured to transfer a load produced by the weight of a patient to a bone. An expandable bone-locking portion that is integral to the member includes a shape-memory material and expands to produce a locking force. A portion of the bone is removed to form an aperture in the bone. The bone-locking portion is inserted into the aperture, and a temperature increase causes a change from a contracted state to an expanded state resulting in expansion of the bone-locking portion so as to contact the inner surface. The expanding is sufficient to create a locking force at the junction between the inner surface and the bone-locking portion of the prosthesis and the majority of the locking force is applied at or above the metaphysis. The length/width ration of the prosthesis may be less than or equal to 5. The resulting reconstructed long-bone may have improved primary and long-term stability.

Abstract: A dual temperature mold assembly for maintaining a mold cavity used in a cast on strap process at two different temperatures facilitates the removal of the solidified strap after the molten metal is solidified. The mold assembly includes a mold cavity having walls attached to different mold assembly segments that are heated or cooled by thermal energy input and coolant processes which can maintain the mold cavities at different temperatures, so that molten metal around the battery plate lugs in a mold cavity segment is solidified while the sides of the mold cavity are exposed to at least one adjacent heated segment to provide thermal energy thereinto, resulting in a reduction of the amount of molten metal necessary for a cast on strap, and reducing the amount of thermal energy input into the process for manufacturing the straps.

Abstract: Provided are an aluminum alloy having high toughness and high electric conductivity, an aluminum alloy wire, an aluminum alloy stranded wire, a covered electric wire, a wire harness, and a process for production of an aluminum alloy wire. The aluminum alloy wire contains by mass 0.2 to 1.0% of Mg, 0.1 to 1.0% of Si, and 0.1 to 0.5% of Cu with the balance being Al and impurities and satisfies the relationship: 0.8?Mg/Si mass ratio?2.7. The Al alloy wire exhibits an electric conductivity of 58% IACS or above and an elongation of 10% or above. The Al alloy wire is produced via successive steps of casting, rolling, wire drawing, and softening treatment. Since the Al alloy wire has been subjected to softening treatment, the wire is excellent in toughnesses such as elongation and impact resistance, so that when used in a wire harness, the wire is inhibited from being broken in the neighborhood of a terminal in mounting the wire harness.

Abstract: We propose here a class of new materials for high heat-flux applications including high flux heat exchangers, rocket engines, jet engines, gas turbines, space-plane wings, and fusion reactors. The materials are nano-composites formed from copper and a refractory metal, especially niobium, vanadium, or chromium, but also potentially silver, iron, tantalum, tungsten, or molybdenum. The copper plus refractory mix is fast-melted, e.g. by arc melting, and then fast-cooled and worked. When cast the component metals separate into a fractile metal-metal composite that should have excellent heat-transfer qualities. Working the material makes it a lot stronger by extending the fractile structures into micron, and submicron (nano-scale) filaments and sheets of metal-metal composite.
