Patent number: 8641839Abstract: The present invention relates to materials, methods and apparatuses for performing imprint lithography using amorphous metallic materials. The amorphous metallic materials can be employed as imprint media and thermoplastic forming processes are applied during the pattern transfer procedure to produce micron scale and nanoscale patterns in the amorphous metallic layer. The pattern transfer is in the form of direct mask embossing or through a serial nano-indentation process. A rewriting process is also disclosed, which involves an erasing mechanism that is accomplished by means of a second thermoplastic forming process. The amorphous metallic materials may also be used directly as an embossing mold in imprint lithography to allow high volume imprint nano-manufacturing. This invention also comprises of a method of smoothening surfaces under the action of the surface tension alone.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2008Date of Patent: February 4, 2014Assignee: Yale UniversityInventors: Jan Schroers, Golden Kumar, Hongxing Tang

Patent number: 8485243Abstract: A cast component having localized areas of improved physical properties is disclosed. The component may initially be produced having a void portion in a predetermined area requiring improved physical properties. A second molten material may be added to the void portion such that it chemically bonds to the void portion. The component may then be finished such to a final shape with a localized area of improved physical properties.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2011Date of Patent: July 16, 2013Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Christopher A. Patent number: 7942190Abstract: A process for repairing one or more worn inlet ports on an interior or exterior surface of an extruder die wherein each inlet port provides an opening into an extrusion channel. The worn inlet port has a funnel shape and a diameter greater than that of the extrusion channel. The worn inlet port is repaired by placing a fused silicon oxide insert into one or more extrusion channels so that an external surface of the insert engages the interior surface of the extrusion channel, thereby forming a pocket around the insert between the circumference or perimeter of the worn inlet port and the external surface of the insert. The pocket is filled with molten metal, and the insert prevents the molten metal from entering the extrusion channel. When the molten metal hardens the inserts are removed. New inlet ports are thereby formed having the same diameter as the extrusion channels.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2009Date of Patent: May 17, 2011Inventor: Charles E. Bates

Patent number: 7322396Abstract: A hollow airfoil is fabricated by providing a casting mold assembly including a casting mold, a casting core, and a standoff spacer that prevents the casting core from contacting the casting mold to define a casting space. A first nickel-base superalloy is cast into the casting space and solidified to form the hollow airfoil. The presence of a through-hole extending through a wall of the hollow airfoil is identified, and the through-hole is closed by welding using a second nickel-base superalloy, without using any freestanding closure element.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2005Date of Patent: January 29, 2008Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Christine Govern, Thomas Joseph Kelly, Joseph Giancarlo Sabato
