Abstract: An improved end tank-to-header joint is disclosed. An end tank is formed with a flange portion that has at least one groove therein. A gasket having a predetermined cross-sectional shape is provided with at least one tongue portion that is adapted to engage the groove in an interference fit, thereby integrating the gasket with the end tank. A header is crimped to form a channel. The channel has a shape the corresponds to the shape of the gasket, such that the gasket is fully seated within the channel. A distal end of the header is then crimped around the flange of the end tank to ensure a fluid-tight seal at the joint.

Abstract: A radiator tank of the type that has a perimeter foot clinched into a U shaped header plate channel to compress an elastomer seal is improved with a means to help assure that portions of the gasket that are displaced from beneath the foot at installation either do not create leak paths, or create leak paths that are static and easier to detect. Integrally molded discrete ribs above the bottom of the perimeter foot extend out and over the inner surface of the header plate, in a location where they can engage and pinch displaced portions of the gasket down against the header plate. Leaks are thereby either prevented, or, at least, the displaced and pinched down section of the gasket is held fast and prevented from moving in and out of the crevice between the tank foot and the channel under the influence of negative to positive pressure variations in the coolant. This makes leak detection easier, because the leak is static and consistent.
Abstract: A heat exchanger for a heating or cooling circuit of a motor vehicle comprises a header plate with a header cover sealingly secured over it, and a number of tubes extending through the header plate. The outer flanks of the collar portions of the header plate, which surround the ends of the tubes situated at the ends of the row of tubes are joined directly, along an inclined plane, to the peripheral channel in which the peripheral edge portion of the header cover is received. The overall length of the header plate, and therefore that of the heat exchanger as a whole, is thereby reduced.
