Abstract: Certain aspects and embodiments of the present invention are directed to a dual closure system disposed within a wellbore and capable of preventing the production of fluids from a fluid-producing formation to the surface. The dual closure system can include a passive closure mechanism and a subsurface safety valve coupled to an electric submersible pump positioned within a passageway defined by the tubing string. The passive closure mechanism and the subsurface safety valve can prevent production of fluid in the absence of the subsurface safety valve. The subsurface safety valve can be positioned within a passageway defined by a tubing string such that the subsurface safety valve can apply force to the passive closure mechanism. The force applied to the passive closure mechanism can maintain the passive closure mechanism in an open position, allowing movement of fluid to the surface in the presence of the active closure mechanism.

  • Patent number: 9267349
Abstract: A device and method of handling a plug in a tubing hanger includes a pressure actuated sequence valve that has multiple outlets. Hydraulic fluid from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) provides hydraulic fluid that selectively flows through the valve for operating a tool that handles the plug. The valve outlets are ported to separate lines for operating different functions of the tool. Flow to a specific outlet occurs by sequencing the valve to a corresponding position, where the valve is sequenced by changing pressure of the hydraulic fluid. The sequence valve is disposed in a piston that is axially movable within the tool. A stroking rod attaches to the piston, and is actuated by diverting flow to sides of the piston.

  • Patent number: 9181785
Abstract: A subterranean pump is delivered on coiled tubing with power and control cables running inside. The pump suction has a tubular inlet that seals in a polished bore in the surrounding tubular. A diverter opens a lateral port and closes entry to the pump suction when the pump is not running and the formation pressure is high enough to bring production to the surface. This configuration prevents the pump from turning while the formation pressure allows production to the surface. If the pump is started it reduces pressure ahead of a movable plug to draw it toward the pump against a spring bias. The lateral ports close and an inline flow path opens to allow the pump to draw through the diverter and discharge into the annular space around the coiled tubing on the way to the surface.

The cutting device is driven axially through the sealing device without relative rotation between the two. The cutting device has an asymmetric blade to cut a coupon from the sealing device by a gradual and progressive disruption of the closure, typically cutting through only a portion the closure device, so that the coupon cut from the closure device remains attached to the closure device when the closure device is ruptured to open the seal. When testing the formation, a pumping mode may be adjusted by changing pressure of an active working medium supplied to a jet pump nozzle. The provision of a channel for supplying the pumped out medium with a check valve helps avoiding a spontaneous flow of the working medium into the under-packer area. • Patent number: 8162053
Abstract: A elongated plunger assembly for pressurized, conduit-enclosed travel utilized in recovery of hydrocarbon deposits in a ground penetrating oil or gas well. The plunger comprises an elongated mandrel, a plurality of radially movable curvilinear wear pads circumferentially disposed adjacent each end of the elongated mandrel, a pad-edge retaining housing extending on at least one end of the elongated mandrel to enclosably retain the longitudinally distal end of a circumferential array of wear pads onto the mandrel, and a centrally disposed wear pad securement ring arrangement to permit release of a worn wear pad, replacement of the worn wear pad at an inner longitudinal edge thereof, thus to permit simple field-accessable removal and replacement of any particular “conduit-worn” “wear” pad from the mandrel of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 8122966
Abstract: Higher volumetric hydrocarbon exposed original or restored by miscible gas injection, solution gas saturated oil is recovered through enlarged expandable liner, sand screened wellbores by controlled wellbore to formation pressure maintained above recovering oils critical bubble point. Exclusively hydrocarbon formation liquids are differential pressure forced through centralizer held larger outer diameter liquid displacer into the production tubing, while maintaining gas volume, pressure, and solution gas saturation in the formation, for higher volume flow for total in place oil recovery. Injected downstructure waterdrive pressure (WDP) into oil or gas formations augments oil and/or gas production and recovery.

Abstract: An artificial lift system removes reservoir fluids from a wellbore. A gas lift system is disposed in a first tubing string anchored by a packer, and a downhole pump, or alternative plunger lift, may be positioned with a second tubing string. A dual string anchor may be disposed with the first tubing string to limit the movement of the second tubing string. The second tubing string may be removably attached with the dual string anchor with an on-off tool without disturbing the first tubing string. A one-way valve may also be used to allow reservoir fluids to flow into the first tubing string in one direction only. The second tubing string may be positioned within the first tubing string and the injected gas may travel down the annulus between the first and second tubing strings. A bi-flow connector may anchor the second string to the first string and allow reservoir liquids in the casing tubing annulus to pass through the connector to the downhole pump.

Abstract: An electrical submersible pumping system having a pump, a motor, a shaft connecting the pump and motor, and a mechanical seal assembly on the shaft. The mechanical seal assembly includes a sleeve circumscribing the shaft that is axially movable with respect to the shaft. The shaft is retained within a guide mount, an inner circumference of the guide mount extends radially outward to define a shoulder. An annular seat is disposed on the shoulder. One end of a resilient retention assembly couples on the outer surface of the sleeve with its other end compressively urged against the seat. A resilient member is compressively mounted on one end to the sleeve and on another end to the shaft at a location past the end of the sleeve distal from the seat.

  • Patent number: 7954551
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a gas lift system adapted to provide a gas injection point to a deeper location in a wellbore. A turn-over suspension mandrel can be landed inside a side pocket mandrel and connected to a gas lift valve on one end and a coil on the other end. A length of production tubing can extend from the side pocket mandrel. The production tubing can include a production packer to seal the annulus between the tubing and the well casing. The turn-over suspension mandrel can be constructed such that gas entering the gas lift valve is directed down through the coil and into the wellbore beneath the production packer. A plug can be placed at the bottom of the coil in order to prevent blowouts during installation of the gas lift system. An alternative embodiment of the present disclosure provides a coil and plug hung from a gas lift valve of a pack-off assembly.
