  • Patent number: 10801285
Abstract: A retrievable self-energizing top anchor tool with a central energizing mandrel disposed around a central tool bore and a set of anchor segments distributed around a circumference of the central energizing mandrel, each having one or more wedge surfaces facing toward the central tool bore and corresponding to and engaging inclined surfaces of the central energizing mandrel. The tool is releasable by relative upward movement of a release sub against a release sub stop arranged within the central tool bore. A release mechanism houses one or more pre-loaded release spring members locked with a release locking mechanism. When unlocked the release spring members exert a retracting bias force on the central energizing mandrel in downward direction along the longitudinal axis relative to the set of anchor segments. This downward movement of the central energizing mandrel causes a radially inward movement of the set of anchor segments.

  • Patent number: 10329870
Abstract: A backup ring assembly has a base ring to support the plastically deformed extrusion barrier when the packer sealing element is set. The base ring has a thin walled tapered extending ring out of the base ring and into the direction of the sealing element. The sealing element fills the annular gap volume between an upper taper on the extending ring and the body of the backup ring such that on setting the pressure internally in the seal material helps to apply a force in a direction toward the mandrel and for the full circumference of the mandrel. This force and the flexibility of the extending ring helps push the extending ring toward the mandrel outer surface to close extrusion gaps between the mandrel and the base ring of the backup ring assembly.

  • Patent number: 10077625
Abstract: A mandrel and a packer outer assembly are formed to create spring compartments on opposed sides of a sealing element. The outer assembly is shear pinned to the mandrel to minimize spring travel during setting. Once set in the normal way the presence of the springs transfers load and sustained loads through the connected tubular string in either direction. A load coming from downhole and acting in an uphole direction first compresses the spring located uphole from the sealing assembly so that the loading goes behind the sealing assembly and into the upper spring and ultimately to the upper slips. The reverse happens when the force is coming from uphole of the sealing assembly and acting in a downhole direction. The springs can be a coil, a stack of Belleville washers, fluid pushed through an orifice, a resilient material or a contained compressible fluid, to name some examples.

  • Patent number: 9995103
Abstract: A sealing element is flanked by wedge-shaped extrusion ring assemblies. The rings climb a ramp on an adjacent pedestal ring on the way out to the borehole wall. Depending on the dimension of the gap to be spanned the extrusion rings slide part way up the pedestal ring ramp or to the top of the pedestal ring. An anchor ring is initially forced up an opposite ramp of the pedestal ring. If the sealing gap is short the anchor ring touches the borehole wall to act as an anchor for the plug while remaining spaced apart from the extrusion ring assembly. For larger gaps the anchor ring moves out far enough to the borehole wall and in contact with the extrusion ring located on top of the pedestal so that reaction forces are directed to keep the anchor ring wedged in position for support of the extrusion ring assembly.

  • Patent number: 9562410
Abstract: A slip design has segments that move relatively axially before moving in tandem up a ramp for radial extension. Due to the fact of the relative movement the segments interlock due to their geometric configuration or their surface treatment such that at the conclusion of such relative movement the load carrying thickness is effectively increased. The extended position minimizes radial extension of the slips for a smaller tool drift dimension while still allowing the needed radial extension and actually extending the radial reach of the slip assembly. The segment can have triangular or trapezoidal tapered interfaces that provide bearing areas between slip segments and adjacent spacer segment. Alternatively, the slips segments can have opposing wickers so that after riding up an underlying support member can interact with that member for load transfer. The supporting members can also be secured to an underlying mandrel for further load transfer.

Abstract: A slip assembly adapted to be used with a downhole tool which comprises metal slip inserts attached to a slip carrier made of a non-metallic material, such as composite material. As such, the non-metallic slip carrier can eliminate 60-70% or more of the metal used in conventional slip assemblies. Through use of the disclosed slip assembly, downhole tools may be set, while also reducing the metallic material used therein and, thus, greatly reducing the drill out time.

  • Patent number: 8893779
Abstract: A downhole tool slip mechanism including a cone, cage, and slip disposed on a mandrel. The cone and cage can be move in relation to one another, and the cone may be locked into place during run-in and retrieval downhole. The cage contains slip slots contains a spring retaining finger for a spring that resides between the retention finger and the slip. This spring serves to bias the slip inward during run-in and retrieval. The slip slots have load-bearing shoulders used to engage the slip during retrieval. The slips outer surface is completely covered in wickers so that the slip can sustain greater loads when set in place. Additionally, the slip has load-bearing shoulders with an increased thickness cross-section to sustain greater loads during retrieval while minimizing slip and cage failures.

Abstract: A barrel slip for a packer assembly operable for use in a wellbore. The barrel slip includes a radially expandable barrel slip body having a first end and a second end. A substantially cylindrical directional gripping surface is disposed on an exterior of the barrel slip body proximate the first end. A substantially cylindrical non directional contact surface is disposed on the exterior of the barrel slip body proximate the second end. In a set configuration, radial expansion of the barrel slip body creates a gripping engagement between the directional gripping surface and the wellbore that opposes movement of the barrel slip body in a first direction. Also, in the set configuration, radial expansion of the barrel slip body creates a contact engagement between the non directional contact surface and the wellbore that diverts force acting on the barrel slip body in a second direction to the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 8763686
Abstract: A linkage device separate from the integrated slips bridge links the pair of spaced-apart members of each slip to prevent sizeable fractured bits from moving away in the event of a fracture in the slip. The linkage device comprises a pair of ductile steel bars the ends of which loosely anchor in holes in each slip member, the holes being located at both sides of the slips at opposite ends of a groove that houses the linkage bar preventing it from falling out of the holes. In this way, a fractured slip may continue to assist in setting the tool and, moreover, potential hazardous interference in further tool operations are avoided. Furthermore, tool damage including slips fracture is reduced by a resilient damper material which buffers the lower cone as it slides down on the slip-holder cage during a tool release operation.
