Flow Stopping Type, E.g., Plug Patents (Class 166/135)
  • Patent number: 10364626
Abstract: A plug is engageable with a ball for seating in a tubular having an internal profile. The plug's body has a bore with a seat. Blocks disposed on the body are temporarily held in a retracted condition, but the blocks are biased outward to an expanded condition for engaging inside the tubular. The plug sets in the tubular with the blocks released from the retracted condition to the expanded condition. With the ball dropped downhole, the seat engages the ball so that fluid pressure is sealed from uphole to downhole through the bore. With applied fluid pressure against the seated ball, the plug can move through the tubular until the blocks seat in the internal profile of the tubing, sliding sleeve, or other component. A seal on the plug can then seal inside the tubular while the blocks seat in the profile and applied pressure pushes on the seated ball on the plug's mandrel.

Abstract: A configurable insert for a downhole tool. The configurable insert can include a body having a bore that is blocked by an impediment such that fluid flow is prevented through the body in both axial directions. The impediment can include a decomposable material. The configurable insert can also include at least one shear element disposed on the body for connecting to a setting tool. The shear element can be adapted to shear when exposed to a predetermined force, thereby releasing the setting tool from the body. The configurable insert can also include one or more threads disposed on an outer surface of the body below the at least one shear element for connecting the body to the downhole tool.

Abstract: A cement retainer comprises a plug that may be run into casing on a wire line and set in a conventional manner. A passage through the plug allows cement to be pumped therethrough. A wiper plug follows the cement, wipes the inside of the casing and latches onto the retainer to prevent back flow of cement. In some embodiments, the cement retainer and wiper plug are made of drillable materials allowing a series of squeeze operations to be conducted, one after another without undue delay, and then be drilled up in a single bit run. In some embodiments, the cement retainer and wiper plug are made of metals, drillable or non-drillable, or other long lived materials in order to plug wells in the process of abandoning them.

The plug can include a body having a first end and a second end, at least one malleable element disposed about the body, at least one slip disposed about the body, at least one conical member disposed about the body, and an insert secured to an inner surface of the body proximate the second end of the body. The insert can be adapted to receive a setting tool that enters the body through the first end thereof. The insert can include a passageway extending therethrough. The insert can be adapted to release the setting tool when exposed to a predetermined axial force, thereby providing a flow passage through the insert and the body. At least one of the body and the insert can be adapted to receive an impediment that restricts fluid flow in at least one direction through the body, wherein the impediment comprises one or more decomposable materials.

  • Patent number: 8505623
Abstract: A bridge plug can be deployed downhole and retrieved using a retrieval tool disposed on jointed or coiled tubing or on another bridge plug. Internally, the bridge plug has a sleeve that is movable on a stem of the plug's tailpiece. When in a first position, the sleeve prevents fluid communication through ports in the stem so that circulated fluid from the retrieval tool can be used to clear debris from the plug during retrieval. When the retrieval tool engages the sleeve in the plug, pulling up on the tool moves the sleeve to an intermediate position in which fluid pressure is equalized across the plug. Further pulling up on the tool locks the sleeve in a further position on the stem so that circulated fluid from the retrieval tool will pass directly to the stem's ports. Movement of the sleeve by the retrieval tool also releases the engaged slips and packing element on the bridge plug's mandrel.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a downhole plug with an expandable elastomeric packer (1) having two ends, surrounding a main section (25). The intended application of the downhole plug is for sealing wellbores and tubulars (4). At least one expansion ring (13) adjoins at least one of said two ends of the elastomeric packer (1), and at least one support ring (15) applies an axial force (16) in a longitudinal direction of the downhole plug. At least one of said two ends of the elastomeric packer (1) is made with a tapered surface. The at least one expansion ring (13) is made with a tapered surface configured in such a manner that the application of the axial force (16) in a longitudinal direction of the downhole plug leads to the simultaneous expansion of the elastomeric packer (1) and the at least one expansion ring (13).

  • Publication number: 20130153220
Abstract: An expandable fracture ball seat assembly for use in wellbore zone fracturing operations functions to permit passage therethrough and exit therefrom of fracture ball plugs of only diameters less than a predetermined magnitude. In a representative form, the seat assembly includes a ring stack disposed within a tubular member and formed from a first expandable ring coaxially sandwiched between a setting ring and a second expandable ring. When an oversized fracture ball plug is forced into the seat assembly it axially compresses the ring stack and reduces the diameter of the first expandable ring and telescopes it into the second expandable ring, with the first expandable ring and the setting ring blocking passage through and exit from the seat. A reverse passage of a suitably large diameter fracture ball plug through the seat assembly axially returns the setting ring and first expandable ring to their original positions.
