Patent number: 7832488Abstract: An anchoring module capable of being secured within a structure includes at least one compliant ring configured to radially expand and an expandable device positioned within the compliant ring to expand the compliant ring from a relaxed state to interface with the structure. The anchoring module is part of a modular system used to harvest fluid, such as oil or natural gas from a structure, such as a pipe or well. Another module of the system, sometimes referred to as a support or back-up module, employs an expandable surface that is capable of expanding to the diameter of the interior of the borehole. These modules may be combined in a variety of configurations to support a sealing element, such as an inflatable sealing element. The self-conforming nature of the system obviates the need for prior knowledge of the structure or complex sensor systems to chart the structure. The anchoring module can also be utilized in a crawling system to convey tools inside a structure.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2005Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignees: Schlumberger Technology Corporation, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventors: Julio Guerrero, Kartik M. Patent number: 7814978Abstract: Casing expansion and formation compression for permeability plane orientation. A method of forming at least one increased permeability plane in a subterranean formation includes the steps of: installing a casing section in a wellbore intersecting the formation; expanding the casing section in the wellbore; and then injecting a fluid into the formation, the injecting step being performed after the expanding step is completed. Another method includes the steps of: applying an increased compressive stress to the formation, the compressive stress being radially directed relative to a wellbore intersecting the formation; and then piercing the formation radially outward from the wellbore, thereby initiating the increased permeability plane.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: David J. Publication number: 20100252278Abstract: Novel anchor assemblies are provided for installation within an existing conduit. They comprise a nondeformable mandrel, an expandable metal sleeve, and a swage. The expandable metal sleeve is carried on the outer surface of the mandrel. The swage is supported for axial movement across the mandrel outer surface from a first position axially proximate to the sleeve to a second position under the sleeve. The movement of the swage from the first position to the second position expands the sleeve radially outward into contact with the existing conduit.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2009Publication date: October 7, 2010Inventors: Michael J. Patent number: 7798223Abstract: A method of isolating a section of a drilled bore containing a problem zone comprises: providing a section of tubing; locating the tubing in the section of the bore; and expanding the tubing and forming at least an outer portion of the tubing to conform to irregularities in the bore wall, to isolate the problem zone. The tubing may feature a formable outer section, and the expansion of the tubing may be achieved using a compliant rotary expander.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2006Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Andrew Michael Duggan, Gareth Lyle Innes

Patent number: 7798225Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for performing an expedited shoe test using an expandable casing portion as an annular fluid barrier. Further provided are methods and apparatus for successfully recovering from a failed expansion so that a shoe test can be completed without replacement of the expandable casing portion. In one recovery method, a selectively actuatable fluid circulation tool is provided to further expand the expandable portion or perform a cementing operation. Additionally, methods and apparatus are provided to drill a wellbore and form an annular fluid barrier in a single trip.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2006Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Richard Lee Giroux, Lev Ring

Patent number: 7757767Abstract: A lock for a perforating gun system comprising, a housing, a cylinder formed in the housing, a piston assembly disposed within the cylinder, and anchoring arms coupled with the piston assembly. Detonation of the shaped charges of an associated perforating gun produces a pressure surge which is communicated to a surface of the piston assembly. Appropriate movement of the piston assembly outwardly rotates the anchoring arms into anchoring engagement with an associated tubular. Thus the pressure from the detonation event will anchor a perforating system within its associated tubular.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2008Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Freeman L. Patent number: 7748476Abstract: A gripper mechanism for downhole tool is disclosed that includes a linkage mechanism and a flexible toe disposed over the linkage mechanism. In operation, an axial force generated by a power section of the gripper expands the linkage mechanism, which applies a radial expansion force to the flexible toe. For certain expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe from a roller-ramp interface expanding the linkage. For other expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe by expansion of the linkage in a three-bar linkage configuration. For other expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe by expansion of the linkage in a four-bar linkage configuration. Thus, the gripper can provide a desired expansion force over a large range of expansion diameters.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2007Date of Patent: July 6, 2010Assignee: WWT International, Inc.Inventor: Rudolph Ernst Krueger, V

Publication number: 20100126725Abstract: A bottom hole assembly (BHA), adapted to be positioned in a casing and to isolate a portion of a wellbore, which includes a packer assembly with a first sealing element extending between first and second portions of the packer assembly. A method of setting a BHA in a casing which includes increasing a BHA pressure to activate an anchor assembly, applying a mechanical force to mechanically deform a first sealing element to thereby establish an initial seal between the first sealing element and an interior surface of the casing, and increasing a pressure in a space between the BHA and the casing and in a cavity within the BHA to increase a differential pressure across the first sealing element and thereby establish a pressure-energized seal between the first sealing element and the interior surface of the casing.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 25, 2009Publication date: May 27, 2010Inventor: John E.
