    Abstract: A reciprocating pump vent-dump and methods of use for utilization in the hydrocarbon industry. The device is preferably used with barrel pumps although it may be used with tubing pumps. The device is positioned at the bottom of the wellbore immediately above the stinger and immediately below above the standing valve and comprises a sliding piston within an outer housing. The device may be opened pulling upwards on the pump drive mechanism thereby allowing fluid within the production tubing to drain back into the formation as long as the pump drive mechanism is held up. The device closes when the pump is returned to normal operation.

    Abstract: Circulation flow apertures in a wellbore pipe, tubing, casing or casing liner screen may be selectively closed by an internal pipe sleeve that is formed of a thin, malleable material. One axial end of the sleeve is flared and secured to the inner bore surface of the pipe as by welding or by clamping between the ends of axially adjacent pipe joints joined by a threaded coupling. The remaining length of the sleeve extends along the pipe and over any pipe apertures to form an annular space between the outer cylinder surface of the sleeve and the inner bore surface of the pipe. A perimeter seal element such as an O-ring is placed around the sleeve outer perimeter beyond the apertures in a direction opposite from the sleeve flare. The flow aperture in the pipe is closed by a swaging tool that expands the sleeve against the pipe bore wall sufficiently to close the annulus and compress the O-ring seal against the pipe borewall.

The pistons coordinate to provide a check valve so that fluid, such as drilling mud, is permitted to flow in one direction while under pump pressure and works as a relief valve in the event of excessive wellbore pressure when the pump is turned off. Both pistons are provided with apertured plates that selectively define fluid passages through the valve. In the described embodiment, the valve also includes a frangible vent cap that is self-securing and easily replaceable. The cap permits venting of excessive downhole pressures.

The dogs reach a recess and the ball moves through the seat. Subsequent, larger balls can pass through the seat, with the dogs in the recess, at much smaller pressure drops than the original ball.

    Abstract: A one trip method for drilling a wellbore below a cemented casing is disclosed. An apparatus for use in performing the method is also disclosed. The method comprises lowering a drill bit into a casing cemented in the wellbore. The casing has float equipment connected therein. The drill bit is rotated in the casing above the float equipment so that it expands radially outwardly to a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the casing. The float equipment, which can be a float shoe or a float collar or any other type of float equipment known in the art, includes an outer case with a valve connected therein. The outer case is comprised of a drillable material. Thus, the drill bit utilized to drill the wellbore can begin its drilling operation above the float equipment and successfully drill a wellbore below the casing having a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the casing.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a drop ball sub that may be used to drop a large ball having an outer diameter larger than the inner diameter of a restriction in the wellbore such as the running tool used to run a first casing string through a second casing string. The drop ball sub of the present invention may be used to operate any downhole tool that would benefit by receipt of a large ball. By dropping a larger ball, in one use of the invention larger valves can be controlled in the float equipment that provide a larger fluid flow path. A larger fluid flow path reduces surge pressure and enables the system to handle more debris. The present invention provides a system that preferably provides for a diverter tool above the running tool and a diverter tool below the running tool.

In the event of a well kick, the valve can be shattered with pressure from the mudline. In another embodiment, the apparatus can be placed in sealing contact with the tubular and can incorporate a valve which can be manually closed in the event of a well kick. In yet another alternative, the incorporated valve can be automatically actuated to open as the apparatus sits on the tubular and closed as the apparatus lifts from the tubular. In yet another embodiment, sealing contact with the tubular can be obtained by simply advancing the apparatus into the tubular.

    Abstract: An improved ball seat is described for downhole use. The ball seat can be held in place by one or more shear pins or other fixation devices or by the nature of assembly. A breakable device, such as a rupture disc, is in communication above the ball and with an enlarged piston area below. When the breakable member or rupture disc breaks, the applied pressure is translated to a far larger piston area, and the shear rating of the shear pin or pins is almost instantaneously overcome. Thus, the pressure at which the ball seat releases is determined by the design and rating of the breakable member or rupture disc. The cavity behind the breakable member is preferably grease-filled with a small weep hole to avoid trapping pressure during assembly.
