Abstract: An apparatus for containing pressure associated with a well includes a ram fluid chamber, a ram piston, and an intensifier piston within a housing. The ram piston has ends associated with a ram and with the ram fluid chamber. The intensifier piston has ends associated with the ram fluid chamber and a fluid source. The end of the intensifier piston associated with the fluid source has a larger surface area than the end associated with the ram fluid chamber. Fluid from the fluid source applies a first pressure to the second end of the intensifier piston to move the intensifier piston. Movement of the intensifier piston applies a second pressure greater than the first pressure to fluid in the ram fluid chamber to move the ram piston and associated ram toward a closed position.

  • Patent number: 6454015
Abstract: A gate valve has downstream shear and seal capabilities in which the gate will stroke far enough to cover the downstream seat interface, and has a single shearing surface for shearing of a wireline. The gate has an inlay of a hard ductile material such as Stellite® along the shearing edge of the gate. The gate also has a coating of an extremely hard material such as tungsten carbide on the sealing surface of the gate. The seat also has an inlay of a hard ductile material such as Stellite® along its shearing edge. The gate fully covers and seals the upstream seat interface after the shear media has fallen below the upstream gate/seat interface. An upstream lip seal for the upstream seat ring is energized to seal on upstream pressure.

  • Patent number: 6357529
Abstract: A subsea completion having an in-line Christmas tree received within a wellhead. The in-line Christmas tree having at least one valve closure element, for example valve gates. Valve actuator couplings, for example push rods are operatively engaged with the valve closure elements and extend through walls of the in-line Christmas tree and wellhead. Relatively bulky valve actuator mechanisms may therefore be mounted externally of the wellhead, with only the relatively small and unobtrusive actuator couplings extending into the wellhead and tree interiors. The in-line tree is used together with a jumper module, secured and sealed to the wellhead, and a separate flow control package.

  • Publication number: 20010042619
Abstract: A tubing hanger incorporates a flow control valve that is ordinarily found in a horizontal christmas tree. A branch passage forming a production fluid outlet has a mouth that intersects with a vertical production bore. A valve closure element in the form of a rotatable sleeve or saddle is disposed in the bore for co-operation with a seat disposed in the branch passage. Rotation of the sleeve, e.g. by means of a shaft extending through a crown plug, brings a hole into or out of alignment with the seat to control production fluid flow. In other embodiments, the sleeve is axially movable.

Abstract: A preferably fiber optic line passes into a well interior through a pressure barrier such as a tree or wellhead housing, via a modified horizontal penetrator assembly. The penetrator assembly comprises double poppet valve assemblies arranged to open upon engagement of the penetrator with an interior well component such as a tubing hanger. Retraction of the penetrator closes the poppet valves, sealing the pressure barrier, severing the line and allowing the tubing hanger to be pulled. A replacement line is readily installed through the open poppet valve assemblies.

  • Patent number: RE42772
Abstract: A choke for removing large diameter particulate matter from an oil or natural gas well includes a housing having a chamber with an integral solids receptacle. The chamber is in communication with a flow stream outlet and a flow stream inlet. The flow stream inlet is located below the flow stream outlet. The flow stream inlet directly adjoins the integral solids receptacle in the chamber. The choke includes a solids removal outlet located below the flow stream inlet in communication with the chamber for flowing particulate from the chamber when actuatedby a user. The choke includes a needle disposed in a bonnet connected to the chamber above the flow stream inlet for controlling the flow stream from the flow stream inlet to the flow stream outlet by engaging a choke face of a seat with the needle.
