  • Patent number: 10294733
Abstract: A length-adjustable connector for a downhole tool has an outer tubular body with an inner bore and a first locking profile accessible from the inner bore. A rotatable inner tubular body having a second locking profile is within the outer tubular body. The connector also has a threaded connection between the outer and- inner tubular bodies that causes axial movement of the inner tubular body relative to the outer tubular body as the inner tubular body rotates, and a locking sleeve having first and second ends sized to engage the first and second locking profiles respectively. The locking sleeve prevents relative rotation of the tubular bodies when engaged with the locking profiles. A connector is carried by the inner tubular body that extends axially away from the locking sleeve, and moves axially relative to the outer tubular body as the inner tubular body is rotated.

The setting sleeve holds the potential energy in the housing that would otherwise cause the housing to grow radially and away from a locking function. The locking is defeated as a surrounding setting sleeve with a recess is moved to juxtapose the recess with the segmented housing allowing the housing to spring into the recess and away from lock ring engagement that previously maintained the locked position. The tubing head spool is secured by a threaded union to an intermediate head spool. The intermediate head spool is secured by another threaded union to a wellhead. Each tubular head secures and suspends a tubular string in the well bore. The hybrid wellhead system is capable of withstanding higher fluid pressures than a conventional independent screwed wellhead, while providing a more economical alternative to a flanged, or ranged, wellhead system because it is less expensive to construct and faster to assemble.

  • Patent number: 7455105
Abstract: A tubing hanger apparatus and method for installing coiled tubing in oil and gas wells utilizes a tubing head assembly having a vertical flow passage therethrough, a hydraulically operated piston in an upper portion of the flow passage; a double tapered slip cup and an annular packoff assembly in a lower portion of the flow passage, and a contractible double tapered slip assembly disposed between the piston and slip cup. The piston, in a normally raised position and the slip in a normally radially expanded position allows coiled tubing to be lowered or raised therethrough and through the slip cup and packoff assembly. The piston is lowered by hydraulic pressure to apply a vertical force that radially contracts the slip assembly to grip the tubing and support the weight thereof and the weight is transferred through the slip cup to expand the packoff assembly and seal the tubing.

Abstract: A coil tubing hanger system and a method of installing such system is provided. The coil tubing hanger system comprises a body having an axial opening there through. A slip bowl having a base and housing a slip that can be retained in a first position spaced apart from bowl base and a second position proximate the bowl base is fitted within the opening. The slip has inner teeth. Tubing is fitted within the slip and through the bowl while the slip is retained in the first position. The slip is then allowed to drop to the second position such that the slip teeth bite onto the outer surface of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6499537
Abstract: The well reference apparatus and method of the present invention includes a reference member preferably permanently installed within the borehole at a preferred depth and orientation in one trip into the well. The reference member provides a permanent reference for the location of all operations, particularly in a multi-lateral well. The assembly of the present invention includes disposing the reference member on the end of a pipe string. An orienting tool such as an MWD collar is disposed in the pipe string above the reference member. This assembly is lowered into the borehole on the pipe string. Once the preferred depth is attained, the MWD is activated to determine the orientation of the reference member. If the reference member is not oriented in the preferred direction, the pipe string is rotated to align the reference member in the preferred direction. This process is repeated for further corrective action and to verify the proper orientation of the reference member.

Abstract: Apparatus for inserting a tubing hanger into a tubing head spool on a live well includes a landing spool and a landing joint that reciprocates through a top end of the landing spool. The landing joint is connected to the tubing hanger. The landing spool is connected to a top flange of a blowout preventer on the live well. The blowout preventer is then opened and the tubing hanger is injected into the tubing head spool. A lifting spool is also provided to permit the tubing hanger to be injected without the use of a service rig. Safety is improved, costs reduced and production is facilitated because the well does not have to be killed.

  • Patent number: 6192981
Abstract: A coiled tubing hanger assembly for supporting coiled tubing in a well including, as a first element, a mechanically-assisted slip assembly characterized by multiple slip segments inserted in a tapered slip bowl located in the midsection of a coiled tubing head. The conical slips are constrained to move in concert in the tapered throat of the tubing head midsection by means of a slip retainer ring and rest on a rack cylinder slidably positioned in the bore of the midsection beneath the slips. The rack cylinder is typically fitted with lands and grooves that engage a pinion gear attached to a slip-operating mechanism to facilitate manually raising and lowering the rack cylinder and the slips together, causing the slip teeth to selectively engage and disengage the segment of coiled tubing extending through the slips and the bore of the rack cylinder, into the well.
