  • Patent number: 8960276
Abstract: A wellhead seal device forms metal seals in an annular space between inner and outer tubular members such as a rough casing held within aligned casing and tubing heads. An annular metal sealing sleeve has a lower portion seated in the annular space, and an upper portion which forms an inner sealing annulus adjacent the outer wall of the inner tubular member. A metal seal ring and a wedge ring are located in the inner sealing annulus. A retaining ring is retained by the upper portion above the wedge ring. Threaded seal energizing members extend through the retaining ring to push downwardly on the wedge ring and compress the metal seal ring radially inwardly to form a metal seal to the inner tubular member and thus seal the inner sealing annulus. The lower portion of the annular metal sealing sleeve may seal to the casing head and to the casing.

The system can be used in combination with a friction grip clamping assembly to greatly streamline the wellhead design.

Abstract: A lockdown flange for use with an independent screwed wellhead includes an annular body having a center passageway with an internal diameter at least as large as a passageway through the wellhead. The lock down flange may be used to construct a multi-lock adapter for connecting a high pressure valve, a blowout preventer or a well stimulation tool to the independent screwed wellhead. The lockdown flange ensures that stress on connection points to the screwed independent wellhead due to elevated fluid pressures used for well stimulation procedures does not exceed engineered specifications.

  • Patent number: 6920925
Abstract: A wellhead isolation tool and a wellhead assembly incorporating such a tool are provided. The wellhead assembly has an annular assembly coupled to a well. The annular assembly may include a casing head coupled to the well and a tubing head mounted over the casing head. The wellhead isolation tool is suspended in the annular assembly. The wellhead isolation tool has a first end portion extending above the annular assembly and a second end portion below the first end portion within the annular assembly. A production casing suspended in the annular assembly and is aligned with the wellhead isolation tool.

  • Publication number: 20040055742
Abstract: A cup tool for use with a mandrel of a wellhead isolation tool has a substantially right-angled stepped shoulder over which an elastomeric sealing element is forced by elevated fluid pressures. A top end of the elastomeric sealing element is inhibited from extrusion past the stepped shoulder during the insertion of the mandrel, thereby reducing the risk of damaging the sealing element before the mandrel is fully inserted through the wellhead. Once the sealing element is exposed to elevated fluid pressures, the top end of the elastomeric sealing element is forced upwardly over the stepped shoulder, and extruded into an annulus between the mandrel and a well casing or production tubing to provide a high-pressure fluid seal.

  • Patent number: 6662868
Abstract: A clamp for clamping two concentric tubes, typically two concentric tubes in an oil or gas well. The clamp has two axially movable tapered components which can be pulled over one another in an axial direction to provide a contraction of internal diameter which grips the smaller diameter tube. In one embodiment, a spacer is fitted to allow the tapered components to be held apart until the tubes have been correctly positioned. The spacer is then removed, and the tapered components are drawn together to effect the clamping. A hydraulic ram can be provided to separate the tapered components should readjustment be required. In another embodiment, the larger diameter tube is made with a relatively thin wall, so that it can be distorted inwards to grip the smaller tube.

  • Patent number: 6508311
Abstract: A string of pipe formed by the connection together of multiple joints of shorter pipe segments is stored in the water space adjacent an offshore drilling rig. The pipe string bends from the drilling rig floor in a semicircular arc and enters the water adjacent the drilling rig. A curving guide is used to direct the pipe string movement. A platform extension from the corner of the drilling rig is provided to position a work area above the point at which the pipe enters the water. Multiple guides may be employed for simultaneously running two strings of pipe. The string may be stored in one or more long sections or in a single continuous string. The major portions of the string or long pipe sections may be stored below the surface of the water. Provision is made for pumping fluids through the pipe string, and/or the pipe sections, to the well. The string may be stored in a sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6401811
Abstract: A tool tie down system is provided which ties down a well tool inserted into the top end of a casing string being lowered into a well from upward movement caused by pressure forces from below the well tool inside the upper end of the casing string. The system includes a frictionally engageable clasp for supporting a tie down yoke on the bails connecting the traveling block and elevator slips assembly. A plurality of cords attached to the elevator on one end and the tie down yoke on the other end redirect forces from below to hold the well tool in place resisting these forces, the cords being fabricated, for example from an elastomer, a metal or metal alloy, a fiber, or combinations thereof.
