    Abstract: A self-recocking actuation device. One possible use for it is in conjunction with a pneumatic fire protection system. This invention employs the process known as occlusion to store large amounts of gas in a small volume. Metal hydrides in a chamber are used to store hydrogen in the disclosed preferred embodiment. Upon the application of heat--from a heat source like a resistance heater--the charged metal hydride releases its hydrogen (H.sub.2) in a chamber having only one exit opening which empties into a sealed bellows. This bellows contacts a piston located in another chamber wherein a biased resetting spring is provided to normally maintain the piston in contact with the bellows. As the pressure from the H.sub.2 gas builds up, it overcomes the biased spring to move it and the piston along with an associated pin or other actuator.

    Abstract: The method and appliance for fire extinguishing according to the present invention are suitable for use in stationary depot premises, baggage and engineering compartments of transportation facilities, etc. According to the method of the invention, at a suitable position in a compartment, an individual container is fixed, which is fitted with a fuse 3 responding to infrared radiation and carries a fire extinguishing compound whose function is effectuated by a chemically active liquid inhibitor confined in miniature capsules made from thermoplastic material and which is distributed over the compartment after ignition of the fuse 3 by conversion from a liquid to a gas. Vapors of the gaseous inhibitor escape from the container and produce a noncombustible atmosphere in the compartment. The appliance for performing this method embodies a container made non-gastight and fitted with a thermal charge placed inside it in the form of a rod manufactured from a highly inflammable oxygen-containing substance.

    Abstract: A fire protection means comprises a panel consisting of a honeycomb core, having in cells thereof a fire-extinguishing fluid, and of facing sheets bonded to each face of the core, the panel being arranged so that, in use, it is more rigidly enclosed on one side than the other. On entry of, or impact with, a projectile, the facing sheet on the less rigidly enclosed side of the panel peels away, or otherwise preferentially breaks up or away, consequent upon passage of the projectile and/or the ensuing hydraulic shock, so that the fire-extinguishing fluid is rapidly liberated from a large proportion of the area of the panel and substantially in the preferred direction to suppress or extinguish rapidly any fire caused by entry of the projectile.

Liquid outflow from the bottle is through a poppet valve located at the lower end of the bottle; the valve discharges pressurized extinguishant in one or more preselected directions, depending on the location or application of the bottle system; valve actuation is by means of an explosive squib and/or explosive cartridge (as backup). The bottle is initially filled and pressurized through a multi-purpose fitting at the bottle upper end; a filler tube extends from the fitting downwardly into the bottle to introduce the pressurizing agent below the liquid extinguishant surface. The fitting is specially constructed to mount a charging valve, a pressure gage, rupture disc, and liquid deflection mechanism.

    Abstract: A heat actuated valve comprises a base adapted to be mounted on a fire extinguisher container. The base includes a passsage communicable with the container interior. A pair of stop fingers extend forwardly from the base. A fusible element interconnects the stop fingers. The base, stop fingers and fusible element are of one-piece, integral construction. A plunger is slidably mounted in the passage and includes a passage-blocking portion which blocks the passage when the plunger abuts the stop fingers during a fire sensing mode of operation. The plunger is slidable rearwardly to shift the passage-blocking portion to a first passage-opening position to allow the container to be filled. The plunger is operable, in response to melting of the fuse, to spread the stop fingers apart and travel forwardly sufficiently to shift the passage-blocking portion to a second passage-opening position, enabling the container contents to be discharged.

A liquid tight housing with a latched door contains the explosive suppression agent, usually water, until activation takes place. Upper hinges on the door allow it to be pivoted outwardly and its agent released. Once depressed, the latch is released and the door is forced outwardly by a biasing member to release the agent before the explosion arrives.

    Abstract: A heat-responsive valve construction for use with pressurized containers such as aerosol cans and the like, comprising an annular mounting cup in which there is contained an apertured sealing gasket and also a rigid washer engaged with the gasket. Passing through the cup, gasket and washer is an axially shiftable valve stem having an axial bore in its outer end and having lateral or side orifices intermediate its ends, which communicate with the bore. The outer end of the valve stem also has a plurality of heat-sensing arms extending radially and then axially from the end of the stem in spaced relation thereto, said arms being engaged with the top of the mounting cup. A connector ring joins the ends of the arms where they engage the cup. The other end portion of the valve stem carries a compression spring which is engaged with the rigid washer in the cup and also with an abutment on the stem.
