Publication number: 20150068776Abstract: A fire-protection mechanism is described. The fire-protection mechanism includes multiple, overlapping cavities that can be filled with water (and, more generally, a fluid). When the fire-protection mechanism is deployed over an object, such as a building, and the cavities are filled with water, the fire-protection mechanism reduces the likelihood that the object is damaged by the heat associated with a fire proximate to the object, such as a wild fire. In particular, the heat capacity and latent heat of the water significantly increase the thermal time constant of the object, thereby reducing the likelihood of combustion. The fire-protection mechanism may include a reflective coating to redirect infrared radiation away from the object to provide further protection. In addition, the water in the cavities may be refilled, as needed, by directing a stream of water onto the fire-protection mechanism and/or through an internal channel in the fire-protection mechanism.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 2, 2014Publication date: March 12, 2015Inventor: David C. Patent number: 8720593Abstract: A system and method provide portable protection against a fire. An expandable fire protection enclosure has at least a base enclosure member, an intermediate enclosure member and a top enclosure member. The enclosure members are nested in a transportable configuration. When needed, the expandable fire protection enclosure is placed on a surface and the enclosure members are pulled from the nested, transportable configuration to an occupiable, expanded configuration. The enclosure members are constructed from a thermally-resistant material such as thermal protection system (TPS) silica. The system may include a flexible barrier positionable around an inner perimeter of the base enclosure member. The system may be placed on a thermally protective blanket.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2013Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Inventor: Warren N. Root

Publication number: 20140000916Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed towards fire blocking apparatuses that include fire skirts that extend off edges of solar panels installed on roofs. The fire skirts are configured to block the gap between a solar panel and the roof surface on which it is installed to prevent or suppress the ignition for spreading of fire underneath the solar panel. Some of the fire skirts are heat or fire sensitive and are configured to the melt, deform, or otherwise be altered upon the application of a threshold temperature such that the fire skirts block the gap between the solar panel and the roof surface. Other embodiments are directed towards fire skirts that include a solar panel mounting surface and a shelf surface configured to accommodate ballast or fasteners to affix the solar panel to the roof surface. Such embodiments can be formed from pre-scored or pre-folded sheet materials.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2012Publication date: January 2, 2014Applicant: SOLARCITY CORPORATIONInventors: Julian Ryba-White, Damien Scott, Ben Tarbell
