  • Patent number: 6951254
Abstract: A soil manipulating tool is disclosed which has a handle (12) and a soil penetrating portion (14). The soil penetrating portion (14) is formed from a helical or spiral rod or wire (13) which defines a cavity (18). The rod or wire (13) may be hollow so that fertilizer or other liquid material can pass through the hollow rod wire (13) into the soil in which the tool is to be used. The tool may also include an abutment member for limiting the amount of penetration of the tool into the soil to facilitate churning up of the soil and a blade may also be provided across one of the spirals of the portion (14) to provide a chopping of soil so that a hole can be formed by removal of a plug of soil but at the same time leaving loosened soil at the bottom of the hole. The tool has particular application in aerating and manipulating composted material and the removal of composted material from a compost bin as well as garden applications for the formation of holes, and the aeration of soil facilitating plant growth.

  • Publication number: 20040206518
Abstract: Disclosed is a garden tool to effectively weed or break up ground in a planting area. The tool has an irregularly shaped metal blade attached to a handle which is extremely effective in working ground. The blade is formed of a metal band and may have holes punched there through in order to increase the aeration of the ground when the soil is worked. The loop shaped band has a flat shaped bottom which is ideal for weeding multiple weeds at one time and covering large surface areas. The blade also has a V-shaped portion which serves to effectively weed gardens in which plants are located close together or to weed in close to a plant without risking killing it. Both edges of the band shaped blade are sharpened to make the weeding process even more effective.

  • Patent number: 6595298
Abstract: A multi-purpose weeder attachable to a hand-held rotary power implement is designed to weed, aerate and till soil. A vertical shaft is removably attached to the implement to permit erect operation of the weeder. A pair of substantially spiral-shaped blades are rigidly connected at an acute angle with the lower end of shaft to cause discharge of weeds upwardly and outwardly from soil when the shaft is rotated. The blades are equally spaced from the shaft as they diverge upwardly. A top end of an auger is connected to the lower end of the shaft to penetrate weed and soil at its free end. An annular member with a cross horizontal element connects the upper ends of the blades to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6179062
Abstract: A garden tool comprising a ground engaging portion for engaging the ground and up rooting a plant, a handle extending upwardly and forwards from the ground engaging portion such that a user can stand upwardly while using the tool. The ground engaging portion including at least two arms extending downwards and forwards being spaced apart and parallel for digging underneath a surface of the ground and a wire coupled to an end of a respective arm extending horizontally therefrom and is coupled to the arms such that the wire has a substantial amount of tension for engaging a root of the plant. The ground engaging portion has two outer arms and an inner arm, the outer arms are spaced outwardly from the ground engaging portion such that the inner arm is located in between and in front of the two outer arms, the arms extend downwardly and forwardly forming a substantially “C” shape and the wire is connected to each of the arms at a groove which is cut into the ends of the arms.

  • Patent number: 5490374
Abstract: The plant puller is a hook attached at one end of a pole or handle. The hook is used to grip a plant to be pulled from the soil. While a standard circular hook may be used, a tapered hook which causes a compression of the plant as it is drawn into the tapered toe end of the hooks provides a firm grip for pulling the plant from the soil. The tapered hook may have a beveled inner surface with a stop in the toe tip to provide additional griping force when the plant is pulled. The weed puller may be used to pull plants at or above the soil surface or be forced into the soil and pulled to grip the plant roots below the surface.

  • Patent number: 5327977
Abstract: A cultivator includes a handle having a lower end with a tool member connected thereto. The tool member has first and second spaced-apart tines, each of the tines having an outer tip and being tubular with a longitudinal interior hollow extending to the tip. A flexible member, such as a wire, extends from the hollows of the times and between the tips thereof. There are devices for securing the flexible member in tension between the tips of the tines. Preferably the tines have outer portions which are thinner and harder than inner portions of the tines. For example, the outer portion of each tine may be a tubular insert telescopically received within the inner portion. The devices for securing the wire may include a reel secured to one end of the wire.

  • Patent number: 4856599
Abstract: A ground-working tool for attachment to the foot of the wearer includes a base plate for attachment against the underside of a wearer's shoe and a pair of ground-working hoe blades rigidly supported beneath the base plate. The hoe blades are generally flat in shape and are arranged in a common plane with one of the hoe blades being positioned beneath a forward portion of a base plate and the other hoe blade being positioned beneath a rearward portion of a base plate. Further, each hoe blade defines a forwardly-directed cutting edge and a reawardly-directed cutting edge which are parallel to one another and which extend transversely of the the base plate. When the tool is moved by the wearer's foot in a fore-and-aft scuffing action, soil loosened by the cutting edges is permitted to pass across the blades through the space defined between each blade and the base plate.

  • Patent number: 4122570
Abstract: The specification discloses a tool used for chopping and scraping earth which is easily convertible into numerous different implements such as a rake, shovel, broom, fork or the like. An apertured working section is disposed normally to an elongated handle. Two intersecting planar cutting surfaces are integrally formed and extend along the base of the working section in order to define a cutting edge which enables the tool to be used for cutting soil. The aperture formed through the working section permits the passage of earth therethrough to facilitate scraping of soil. The working section contains several smaller apertures to which any of a variety of attachments can be bolted when it is desirable to use the tool for some function other than chopping or scraping earth.
