  • Patent number: 5579847
Abstract: A compact lawn aerator comprises a rigid frame having a hitch for releasibly fastening the frame to the back of a self-propelled mower. An elongated axle is secured to the under side of the frame and a set of aerator wheels are rotatably mounted at spaced intervals along the axle. Each of the aerator wheels has a generally disk-shaped hub from the periphery of which four spikes radiate. Each spike initially projects from the hub along a radius but curves along its length in the direction of rotation of the wheel. The spikes are tapered to a sharpened point and their curve is determined so that, as the wheel rotates, the ends of the spikes pierce the soil at substantially right angles and the shank of the spikes slip into the ground progressively through the pierce point. This greatly reduces the force needed to drive the spikes into the ground, thus reducing the weight and size of the device.

The tines are arranged to enter the ground in the same sense as the forward movement of a vehicle driving the implement. The rotor is connected to a second tined rotor which rotates faster than the first rotor which rotates in the same direction as the wheels of the vehicle but at a lower peripheral speed than the speed of movement of the implement over to the ground. The ratio of the rotational speeds of the two rotors is between 2:1 and 4:1. Each rotor has a rotor shaft with a plurality of axially spaced mounting flanges, the tines being bolted to the flanges and extending generally tangentially of the rotor shaft.

  • Patent number: 4412587
Abstract: A soil working machine has a working member with element blades and a scraping member that releases clods cut out by the working member so that the clods drop to the ground. Both of the members can be positively driven in the same direction about horizontal axes, but the scraping member can also be rotated by contact with the ground. Preferably, the blades are secured to support discs and extend axially of the working member. Scraping elements on arms of the scraping member project between the blades of adjacent support discs and have vanes which also extend almost axially. During rotation, the vanes are moved to intersect the paths of the blades and to remove the clods. Other forms of scraping members are described. The scraping member ensures that soil is wiped from the blades, to avoiding clogging of the working member and a consequent increased power requirement. Also, the cut clods are preferably replaced upside down by the action of the members.

  • Patent number: 4391335
Abstract: A wheel that has an alternating tooth structure for improved entry into the soil and movement therethrough for efficient soil lifting and flow, self cleaning and balanced operation. The wheel includes a central hub, four equally spaced spokes extending radially therefrom to a circular flange from which radially extending rearwardly curved, from the direction of travel, teeth extend to work the soil. A tooth of the teeth has a rearward surface that is tapered from one lateral surface to the other and rearwardly to move the soil to one side of the wheel and the adjacent tooth has a rearward surface that is similarly but, oppositely tapered but also rearwardly, to move the soil to the other side of the wheel with the teeth alternating in this sequence around the circumference of the flange.

  • Patent number: 4373590
Abstract: Tilling apparatus disclosed has a rotor shaft with axially spaced multiple tine and hub assemblies having hoe portions of adjacent tines overlapping one another. The apparatus is constructed as a central section and has wing sections pivotally connected to the central section. A first pivot axis for each wing section is the same horizontal plane as the rotor shaft. A first link connects at its lower end to the wing section at the first pivot axis and at its upper end to the central section at a second pivot axis. A thrust link driven by a two-way cylinder moves the wing section about the first pivot axis and then about the second pivot axis. Each tine hub is made in two half-bodies supporting two tines at 90 degrees, with a recess to turn adjacent hubs 30 degrees to one another. Each tine has a bevel on the outer side and a smooth hard surface on the inner side.

A rotary hoe supporting arm is pivotally connected to a lower end of the spacer member and an elongate adjustment rod extends from a rear end of the rotary hoe supporting arm to an upper end of the spacer member. A spring member is sleeved on the adjustment rod and cooperates with spring length adjusters on the rod to bias the rotary hoe downwardly into ground engagement and control the up and down movement thereof as the hoe travels over the earth surface. The rotary hoe implements are constructed or ganged together as units and are selectively mountable along the length of the tool bar for operator control.
