Patent number: 7568439Abstract: A knife assembly includes a unique finned point with angled soil-engaging surfaces defining several fracture areas and preventing slabbing to avoid excessive soil disturbance and knife wear. The knife has an extended length between the point and upper mounting brackets to facilitate operation of the point over a substantial range of depths, and the mounting brackets operate above ground level even at maximum point depth operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2007Date of Patent: August 4, 2009Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: David L. Patent number: 6332412Abstract: A ground-engaging paired row furrow forming tool includes a tool body having fore and aft ends with an outer edge defined on each of two opposing sides of the tool body. A furrowing wing is located adjacent each of the opposing sides and protrudes from bottom portions of the tool body. The tool body has lower surfaces including a central front surface portion which is angled upwards towards the fore end and a center passage is defined between the furrowing wings. This passageway is in part defined by a central rear surface portion which is adapted to be substantially aligned fore to aft in a direction of travel T during operation of the ground engaging tool. This paired row opener works well without compromise in a broad range of soil conditions without fouling and enables planting of seed rows spaced widely apart while minimizing soil surface disturbance.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: December 25, 2001Assignee: Flexi-Coil Ltd.Inventors: Gerry Steven Swab, James Wayne Henry

Patent number: 5787991Abstract: An adjustable ridger for a cultivator includes an elongated ridger frame adapted to mount to the sweep member of the cultivator. The frame has a top bracket with an elongated slot extending therethrough. The slot has a width and a longitudinal axis. A plurality of setting holes in the top bracket are spaced apart along the longitudinal axis of the slot, each setting hole having a diameter greater than the width of the slot. A bottom bracket is spaced apart from the top bracket on the frame and has a guide hole therein. An elongated pull pin, having a stepped outer diameter with first and second diameter portions, is insertable through the slot in the top bracket and into the guide hole in the bottom bracket to act as a hinge pin. The second diameter portion is larger than the first diameter portion and yet smaller than the diameter of the setting holes. At least one wing pivotally mounts on the pull pin between the top and bottom brackets.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1996Date of Patent: August 4, 1998Assignee: Sukup Manufacturing CompanyInventor: James D. Patent number: 5310009Abstract: A cutting insert and a wear insert for use in an agricultural tool having a cutting edge for forming a furrow. The agricultural tool includes an essentially syncline shaped slicer having a leading member, a trailing member and a pair of sides tapered from the trailing member toward a sharp convex cutting edge extending longitudinally upwardly and forwardly from the trailing member toward the leading member. A leading deflector extends upwardly and forwardly from the cutting edge and is formed integral the slicer by a mounting web. The mounting web includes a pair of sides extending rearwardly from the leading deflector and expanding to a heel having first and second sides adjoining respective sides of the syncline shaped slicer and a rear portion. Each of the first and second sides having formed therein a notch and having affixed thereto a wear insert. A cutting insert is secured within a slot along the cutting edge.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1992Date of Patent: May 10, 1994Assignee: Kennametal, Inc.Inventor: Don C. Rowlett

Patent number: 5159985Abstract: An insert for use in an agricultural tool having a cutting edge for forming a furrow. The insert includes an elongated wedge having a leading end, a trailing end, a top surface, a first side surface and a second opposing side surface coterminous therewith defining a longitudinally extending lowermost edge. The first and second side surface converge from the trailing end to the leading end and diverge from the lowermost edge to the top surface to form a v-shape leading end. In a preferred embodiment the insert includes a means for aligning the lowermost edge of the insert with the cutting edge of the tool.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1991Date of Patent: November 3, 1992Assignee: Kennametal Inc.Inventor: Don C.
