Abstract: The present disclosure provides various embodiments of a fastener-driving tool that includes a battery-charged supercapacitor as a power source. The fastener-driving tool includes first and second spaced-apart, conductive rails and a partially conductive piston slidably mounted on the rails. The rails and the piston are electrically connected to one another. The supercapacitor is electrically connected to the first rail. When the supercapacitor discharges electrical current, the electrical current flows from the supercapacitor, into the first rail, through the piston into the second rail, and from the second rail. The electrical current induces magnetic fields in the rails and the piston, and the combination of the electrical current and the magnetic fields induce a Lorentz force that acts on the piston to move the piston toward a nosepiece to drive a fastener.

  • Patent number: 5445227
Abstract: A release mechanism for a hydraulic/pneumatic post driver is described. The post driver has a hammer and a guide for directing the hammer from a raised release position along a substantially vertical downward impact path. A hydraulically or pneumatically actuated fluid expandable cylinder is disposed above the hammer and has a telescopically extendible piston for lifting the hammer to the raised release position. The improvement includes one of the piston and the hammer having a female member with inwardly directed gripping dogs. The other of the piston and the hammer has a male member with outwardly directed gripping rollers. One of the inwardly directed gripping dogs and the outwardly directed gripping rollers is spring biased to maintain engagement between the dogs and rollers. A triggering mechanism is provided on the guide to overcome the biasing force of the spring to disengage the dogs and the rollers when the hammer reaches the raised release position.

  • Patent number: 5443196
Abstract: A fastener applicator, for example for cable clips, uses the kinetic energy of a flywheel rotated by a prime mover, preferably a battery driven electric motor, to drive a striker for firing a fastener into a support. An actuator which strikes the striker may be a fixed projection on the flywheel or be an element on the flywheel movable relative to the flywheel by centrifugal force to project the actuator from an inoperative position to an operative position for striking the striker. The drive from the prime mover to the flywheel is through a clutch or releasable drive coupling which temporarily disconnects the drive when the actuator strikes the striker so that the kinetic energy at the flywheel alone drives the striker and the prime mover is protected from the impact. A micro-processor measures the rotational speed of the flywheel and stops the prime mover when a pre-determined speed for the necessary kinetic energy is achieved.

Abstract: In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a steel post driving machine that is mounted on the lift mechanism of a tractor includes a mast having a tubular hammer slidably guided thereon, springs to accelerate the hammer downward, a cable to lift the hammer and lengthen the springs to store potential energy therein, and a mechanism coupled to the cable and powered by the PTO of the tractor for intermittently pulling on and then releasing the cable to cause the hammer to strike repeated impact blows on the top of the steel post. Upper and lower devices are included to maintain the mast in alignment with the post as the lift mechanism is being lowered and the post is being driven into the ground by the hammer.

  • Patent number: 4993500
Abstract: An automatic drive hammer system includes an automatic drive hammer apparatus which is carried by a bucket pivotally mounted to a drill rig. The drive hammer apparatus may be pivoted in the bucket from an off-hole storage position to an on-hole loading/unloading position whereby the drive hammer apparatus is lifted out of the bucket by a winch assembly and the bucket is pivoted to the off-hole storage position. An anvil and connector connects to a drill string and sampler which extend upwardly from a hole in the ground. The drive hammer apparatus has a housing which contains a hammer adapted for reciprocal sliding movement therewithin to cyclically strike the anvil to drive the anvil, drill string and sampler combination into the ground. A trip rail is rigidly attached to the anvil and extends within the housing. A follower assembly is pivotally mounted to the hammer.

Abstract: An automatic impact driver for applying a large torque to a tip chuck by only pressing down a casing so as to remove corroded screws etc. A cylindrical slider freely movable in an axial direction is disposed in the casing, a cam mechanism is installed in between the slider and the chuck, and the chuck is turned by applying an impact force on a plunger through the slider. Since the impact driver is constructed as described above, a loss of impact transmitting force is decreased as compared with a conventional structure in which the slider is directly struck by the casing.

  • Patent number: 4867253
Abstract: A dampener for cushioning engagement forces of an impacting mechanism. An impacting mechanism has relatively movable members that can be releasably coupled together. The coupling engagement produces forces which tend to deform the coupling members. An impacting mechanism, having an actuator with a releasable coupling member is coupled to a relatively movable impact plunger, contains a dampener which compresses or deforms to cushion the coupling force. An impacting mechanism having a dampener for cushioning the forces during coupling engagement prevents the coupling members from being deformed.

  • Patent number: 4785893
Abstract: Demolition apparatus which is attached to a movable boom-like member of a machine. The demolition apparatus includes support structure which carries a power plunger and an actuator plunger. The plungers are mounted in adjacent relationship and are movable with respect to the support structure. A compression spring urges the power plunger in a direction from the support structure. The actuator plunger includes a latch device which engages a portion of the power plunger. In operation, the support structure is moved toward a surface to be demolished. The actuator member engages the surface and remains fixed as the support structure continues to move toward the surface. Therefore, as this occurs, there is relative movement between the support structure and the actuator plunger. A latch carried by the actuator plunger engages a part of the power plunger and retains the position of the power plunger with respect to the actuator plunger.

  • Patent number: 4747455
Abstract: A high impact device, as for producing an impact of 1,000 foot pounds or more, includes a ram which is engageable by a pair of rotating flywheels. The ram may impact a tool, as of a chisel type adapted for demolition purposes, or having a enlarged head for percussion purposes, or other types or purposes. By terminating the engagement of the flywheels with the ram prior to its impact against a tool or similar object, the vibration normally associated with a demolition or percussion device is avoided. Such termination of engagement also reduces reverse shocks and conserves the energy of the rotating flywheels. In one embodiment, the flywheels are moved inwardly and outwardly of the ram through a linkage connected to a solenoid, with each flywheel supported between a pair of arms and alignment of the axis of each flywheel with the side of the corresponding ram being maintained by a torque tube extending between the arms.

  • Patent number: 4732220
Abstract: A piston (3) for impulsively delivering mechanical energy is connected with a crank shaft (5) having a pin (5a) in co-action with a first coupling member (2a, 2b) on a rotatable member (2). The pin (5a) forms a second coupling member, which accompanies the movement of the rotatable member (2) during one half revolution thereof, whereupon an energy-absorbing means, for example, a spring (4) arranged around the piston (3) is compressed. When the rotatable member (2) has reached a limit position, the coupling engagement between the coupling members is instanteously broken, whereupon the energy stored in the spring or the like is transferred to the piston, which executes an impulsive percussion movement. The cycle is repeated when the coupling member (2a, 2b) of the rotatable member is again brought into engagement with the pin (5a).

  • Patent number: 4627500
Abstract: In the coking of coking coal according to the compression process the coking coal is compressed by power hammers before its introduction into the coke oven, whereby these hammers having elongated hammer rods are lifted by means of driven cam disks acting upon them by sections, and then released to drop. The cam shafts bearing the cam disks, corresponding to the number of power-hammer rods, are individually pivoted. Their bearing points on both sides of the hammer rods are movable synchronously and in the same direction and are uniformly actuated by a hydraulic system. Thereby, the individual cam shafts can be driven and pressed against the individual power-hammer rods, according to given data. An even and uniform lifting of all rods and power hammers is achieved by that.
