  • Patent number: 4480700
Abstract: A boring tool particularly useful for cutting counterbores in an engine block includes means for selectively engaging and disengaging an output shaft which is rotated and axially advanced during the cutting operation. Preferably, the selective engaging and disengaging means includes feed threads formed on the output shaft, and a threaded means which is selectively moveable into and out of threaded engagement with the feed threads on the output shaft. Preferably, the boring tool is of the differential-rate type wherein the output shaft is rotated at a first predetermined rotational rate and the threaded means is rotated at a second different predetermined rotational rate. The differential rotational rate establishes the advancement rate of the output shaft. The position of the output shaft and the cutter element it carries can be readily adjusted without necessity of operating the boring tool to establish the cutter position.

  • Patent number: 4474077
Abstract: A molded-plastic retaining member is mounted within the gear case or other internal housing member of a power tool and is keyed thereto. Screws pass through openings in the gear case cover and are received axially in respective bosses formed within the retaining member, thereby securing the gear case cover to the gear case. The gear case cover is formed with an internal hub, and locating ribs on the retaining member radially engage the hub to prevent the retaining member from disengaging the gear case, as the gear case cover is secured to the retaining member. Preferably, the retaining member comprises a partially-formed resilient ring which is molded from a suitable plastic material and is deformable during the assembly operation. Additionally, the internal hub on the gear case cover is provided with a bearing boss, and a bearing is mounted therein for journaling the rear portion of the output spindle.

  • Patent number: 4431063
Abstract: A drive mechanism for a drill provides both rotational drive and axial feed for a drill of substantial diameter such as those used to drill holes for roof bolts in mine shafts. A plurality of sprockets carry two chains of drive links which interlock around the drill shaft with each drive link having depressions which mate with scroll-like projections on the drill shaft. For axial feed, the sprockets are driven from worm drives in separate housings on each side of the chains, the worm drives being driven from gears in a gearbox which are connected through a differential gearset to a hydraulic motor. A second hydraulic motor also drives through the differential gearset to rotate the drill shaft and the entire drive chain assembly. A large diameter face seal serves as the partition between the chain drive assembly and the gearbox.

  • Patent number: 4418767
Abstract: In a positive feed power drill having a spindle drive gear train and a spindle feed gear train, and having hydraulic (air) means for actuating a piston to disengage the feed gear train for automatic retraction of the spindle, provision is made for field alteration of a valve in the hydraulic system, and associated actuating mechanism, to automatically reverse the positive feed when the spindle has been driven either (1) a predetermined extent set by a nut on the spindle which engages an arm over a valve stem and pushes the valve stem to a reversing position or (2) to a predetermined stop when countersinking, at which time the spindle stops advancing, thereby causing the spindle feed gear to have a tendency to move upwardly in the spindle actuator housing.

  • Patent number: 4175471
Abstract: A cutting apparatus with a vertical drive mechanism for in place machining f a valve seat which may include an annular turntable adapted to be rotatably mounted on the valve above the valve seat. A feed shaft is mounted through the turntable so as to be rotatable therewith, and a bottom of the feed shaft is adapted to receive a cutter for machining the valve seat. The vertical drive mechanism is mounted on the feed shaft and includes a nut threaded in the feed shaft and a gear combination. The gear combination may include a first portion which is fixedly connected to the nut, a second portion which operatively engages the first gear portion, and a third portion which operatively engages the second gear portion, the third gear portion being mounted for rotatable slidable friction engagement about the nut.

  • Patent number: 4153119
Abstract: A device for facilitating directional drilling of small diameter holes radially of a mine long hole comprising a segmented sleeve for movement through a guide channel in a main drill unit. A small bit is driven by a flexible shaft which passes through the segmented sleeve. The segmented sleeve remains partially in the guide channel and extends partially out of the guide channel in a straight line from the guide channel. The segments are joined in a manner permitting a 90.degree. turn in the guide channel but allowing no curvature in the portion of the segmented sleeve extending from the guide channel.

  • Patent number: 4097177
Abstract: A drilling and turning power head with an externally threaded spindle adapted to support and feed a tool. The spindle is supported in a cylindrical sleeve by means of bearings and is driven by pulleys and belts from a power axle coupled to a motor. An internally threaded feed hub is mounted on the spindle along with a releasably connected drive hub and both are rotated at different speeds by V-belts from the power axle. Axial feed of the spindle is brought about by the difference in the speed of rotation of the two hubs. Retraction of the spindle is brought about simply by disconnecting the drive hub from the spindle.
