After each driving increment, the pole is raised, preferably with a rapid movement, the ground rod moves downwardly relative to the pole and the next lower pin 20 snaps into position for engagement with the top of the rod for driving. The biasing spring is mounted within the U-shaped bracket and a handle is provided for retracting the pins with a latch for holding the pins in the retracted position for insertion of the ground rod.
