Patent number: 5493072Abstract: A series connected capacitive graded high voltage cable terminator and suspension insulator made up of a number of individual modules each made by molding an insulating material between and around two flat, parallel plates molded of conductive material. The modules are connected in series by stacking them and the cable shield is introduced at one end while the bare conductor emerges from the stack cap. The electrical stress is uniformly divided by the number of capacitors in the series. The stack can also be used to suspend a bare high voltage conductor from a grounded tower.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1994Date of Patent: February 20, 1996Assignee: Amerace CorporationInventor: David R. Patent number: 5214249Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a pair of end collars for coupling an elastomeric weathershed housing to a pair of metallic end fittings, and for reducing electrical stress at the interface of the ends of the weathershed housing and the end fittings, and for sealing the ends of the weathershed housing to the end fittings. In particular, a radially directed force is applied to the weathershed housing by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housing causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housing into intimate contact with the end collars. Also, each of the ends of the weathershed housing is held in contact against the inner end of the respective end fitting to seal the interface therebetween. Accordingly, a watertight seal is created at the interface between each of the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housings.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1991Date of Patent: May 25, 1993Assignee: Hubbell IncorporatedInventors: Waymon P. Goch, John D. Sakich

Patent number: 5159158Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a plurality of elastomeric weathershed housings for enclosing a core member therein. The elastomeric weathershed housings are coupled and sealed together by an insulating collar. A radially directed force is applied to the collar or the weathershed housings to cause intimate contact between the collar and the end portions of the weathershed housings to provide a weathertight seal. In the preferred embodiment, the radially directed force is provided by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housings causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housings into intimate contact with the insulating collar. In another embodiment, the radially directed force is provided by a heat shrinkable insulating collar, which is shrunk about the end portions of adjacent weathershed housings. The core member can be an insulating rod or a plurality of electrical components, such as metal oxide varistors.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1990Date of Patent: October 27, 1992Assignee: Hubbell IncorporatedInventors: John D. Sakich, Waymon P. Goch

Patent number: 4524404Abstract: The invention relates to an outdoor high voltage insulator, wherein the flashover due to the effect of external layers or deposits of pollution is prevented or at least shifted in the direction of higher degree of pollution. A resistance element (1) is connected in series with the insulator itself (2), with the leakage current prior to flashover producing a voltage drop over the resistance element (1). This voltage drop reduces the voltage on the insulator and prevents or retards flashover.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1982Date of Patent: June 18, 1985Inventor: Manoranjan P. Verma

Patent number: 4291194Abstract: A conductor support member includes an external surface having a first portion thereon. The first portion is shaped to generate a localized increase in voltage gradient. Shielding means including surfaces intersecting to define a sharp edge are provided to promote a negative corona discharge adjacent the first portion. The said negative corona discharge produces a positive space charge to reduce the voltage gradient at the first portion. This inhibits the generation of positive corona discharge.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Slater Steel Industries LimitedInventors: Olaf Nigol, Herbert J. Houston, Adolf Gretzinger
