Abstract: An electrical insulator comprises an elongate shank and one or more sheds disposed along the length of the shank. The surface of the insulator comprises longitudinally extending flutes, the depth of which are varied along the length of the insulator such that the circumferential distance of all transverse sections along the length of the insulator is substantially constant or controlled. Instead of flutes, the surface may be formed with an array of protuberances and/or concavities. The insulator thus provides a defined perimeter and surface area along its length, such that areas of the surface are not preferentially heated by surface currents to form dry bands and thereby cause arcing. Such topography also renders the insulator less susceptible to the degrading effects of surface pollution.

  • Patent number: 6501029
Abstract: A high-voltage homogeneous co-curing composite insulator includes first and second end fittings longitudinally separated by a spacer, a resin impregnated fiber core wound onto the end fittings and onto the spacer, and an outer sheath moulded onto the fiber core. Since the resin matrix of the core and the material used to form the outer sheath each include curable resins from the same family and are, therefore, chemically compatible, a chemical link exists between these two elements. The end fittings are provided with a relatively thin wall defining a mechanical fuse.

  • Patent number: 6441310
Abstract: An assembly is provided having a core and a housing. The housing has an internal passageway extending from a first housing end to a second housing end for receiving the core. A coating of an uncured moisture activated material is disposed between the housing and the core. The coating cures upon reacting with moisture penetrating the housing to reseal the housing at a point of moisture penetration. The material cross-links in the presence of the moisture, thereby bonding with the moisture to prevent the moisture from contacting the core. The cured material is a rubber-like substance that adheres to the housing and to the core, thereby resealing the housing at the point of moisture penetration.

  • Patent number: 6359232
Abstract: Resin-impregnated sheet materials, such as fabrics, films, paper and tapes, for forming electrical insulation that exhibits significantly improved voltage endurance performance. The present invention finds particular use as groundwall insulation for high voltage generator stator bars, in which the groundwall insulation is formed by mica tape filled with submicron particles of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide and/or zirconium dioxide, in combination with an unfilled mica tape impregnated with the same or compatible resin binder. The filled tape is preferably in the form of a mica paper having at least one woven fabric on at least one of its surfaces, a resin binder permeating the mica paper and woven fabric so as to bond the woven fabric to the mica paper, and oxide particles dispersed in the woven fabric.

  • Patent number: 6342679
Abstract: A tubular elastic covering for electric components is provided to obtain predetermined values of mechanical and electric/environmental requirements. The mechanical requirements include expandibility and elastic recovery in a radial direction. The electric/environmental requirements include resistance to tracking and resistance to solar radiation. The covering includes an inner insulating layer and an outer insulating layer coaxial with each other, in superposed relationship and bonded together. The covering is made of blends of cross-linked polymeric material, in which the cross-linked blend forming the inner layer has predetermined values of the mechanical requirements and the cross-linked blend forming the outer layer has predetermined values of the electric/environmental requirements. This invention also describes a method of making this covering, a termination for electric cables utilizing this covering, and a method of mounting the termination to an electric cable.

  • Patent number: 6229094
Abstract: An insulator having a torque-resistant or torque-prevailing crimped insulator end fitting; including a method of crimping the insulator end fitting so as to be resistant to torque tending to loosen mounting bolt connections of the insulator. A fiberglass core is located in the insulator and protrudes from the opposite ends of the insulator, and has end fittings seated thereon in close interference engagement, by mounting the insulator through intermediary of the end fittings being attached to power devices by threaded bolts extending from the devices being engaged in the tapped bolt holes. Radially inwardly directed crimping forces are applied to the cylindrical wall structure of the end fittings intermediate the locations of the bosses having the bolts tightened within the threaded bolt holes, and thereby produce a bolt-locking deformation of the bolt holes.
