  • Patent number: 5084963
Abstract: A die and method for forming indentations in a grounding rod. The die is a U-shaped die for use in a hydraulic compression tool. The die has an inner face forming a general recess and has a plurality of series of individual tooth-like projections. The die is used to form a plurality of series of individual tooth-like indentations on an exterior surface of the grounding rod such that a connector can be compressed onto the rod with portions of the connector being deformed into the indentations to fixedly connect the connector to the rod.

  • Patent number: 4887970
Abstract: Clamp for connecting together a ground lead and a ground rod comprising a clamp body with a cavity which surrounds the rod, said cavity is a blind cavity which is conical at least over a part of its length. The clamp body further has a solid section in which a separate hole is provided in which a wire is secured by compression, said wire projecting outside the hole by a length such that it is possible to connect this wire to another wire. The compression joint between the piece of wire and the clamp body can now be produced in the factory. At the site it is quite simple to connect the ground lead with the piece of wire compressed in the clamp.

  • Patent number: 4688969
Abstract: A ground rod installation device having an auger fixedly mounted on the lower end of an elongated drive shaft. A pilot drill projects downwardly from the lower end of the auger. The shaft, auger, and pilot drill have aligned axial passages into which the ground rod is inserted. A releasable fastener then secures the ground rod in place inside the shaft. The shaft is rotated in one direction, thereby causing the auger to draw the shaft into the ground. After the releasable fastener has released the ground rod from the shaft, the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction, thereby withdrawing the shaft from the ground while allowing the ground rod to fall through the passages in the auger and pilot drill and remain in the ground.

  • Patent number: 4626330
Abstract: A torsionally installed anode for galvanic corrosion protection and a combination torsionally installed anode and earth penetrator is disclosed. The anode may be screwed (i.e., torsionally installed) into the earth (e.g., the seabed, the riverbed, or the ground) so as to constitute a sacrificial anode. The anode may serve the dual purpose of protecting an underwater metallic article (e.g., a pipeline or the like) from corrosion, and of supporting the metallic article above the seabed.

  • Patent number: 4577053
Abstract: A ground rod, coupling therefor and method of making that coupling are disclosed providing both strength and improved conductivity. Ground rods are usually copper coated or plated steel rods formed in sections which are driven or, perhaps more correctly, pounded into the ground to form grounding or earthing connections for dissipation of electrical current into the earth. The coupling includes co-extensive inner and outer sleeves of copper and a corrosion resistant metal such as stainless steel, respectively, which are mechanically interlocked along their axial lengths. The inner copper sleeve is formed with threads or oppositely directed cones after the two sleeves are interlocked and in so doing the interlock between the sleeves is enhanced.

  • Patent number: 4540845
Abstract: Method and composition for protecting an electrical grounding device having a generally vertically disposed metal tubular electrode buried in the ground. Near the lower end of the tube, slots are provided in the sidewalls through which a special viscous fluid composition is injected into the surrounding soil to fix the tube in place and provide electrical contact with the earth. The composition surrounds and prevents excessive corrosion of buried metallic bodies and particularly those metallic bodies which are intended to provide electrical contact with the earth. The composition surrounding the metallic body contains primarily metallic oxides such as silicon dioxide. The oxidation activity of the metallic component should have a single electrode potential (standard or formal) at 25.degree. C. of from -0.4 to -2.90. The composition may also contain other metallic oxides in admixture with the primary oxide.

  • Patent number: 4255608
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for preventing a person from coming into dangerously close proximity with an earth-embedded temporary electrical grounding rod so as to lessen the likelihood of electrical shock in the event of a fault current. The overall protective device of the invention includes an earth-embedded, temporary, electrical grounding rod, a mounting collar threadably secured to the upper end of the grounding rod, and a plurality of insulative, elongated struts removably secured to the collar and extending outwardly and obliquely therefrom. A perimeter-defining rope element extends about the grounding rod in a laterally spaced, elevated position relative thereto, and is supported by the oblique struts.

  • Patent number: 4156793
Abstract: An improvement for the assembly of ground rods, comprising a fitting having two threaded portions, the first as a guide portion being adapted to receive an unthreaded ground rod and a threaded gripping portion adapted to grip the end of a rod through deformation of the threads when the rod is forceably inserted in the fitting. Conjointly usable therewith is a similarly threaded terminal fitting adapted to receive an electrical ground line and retain the same permanently in a contact position when the fitting is forceably driven on the rod.

  • Patent number: 4084639
Abstract: An improved electrode for electrically heating a subterranean formation includes a plurality of electrically conductive rod-like members that extend outwardly from a central well bore to provide increased area for conducting electrical current from a source into said subterranean formation. The improved electrode apparatus is adapted to be lowered into a well bore which has been drilled into the subterranean formation and, thereafter, the plurality of rod-like members are driven outwardly from the central well bore. Guide means are provided to direct the rod-like members outwardly into the subterranean formation as a central member is forced downwardly.
