Abstract: A generator assembly for generating power in the downhole end of a drill string used to form a borehole in horizontal directional drilling. The drill string provides a fluid passageway in which the downhole generator is receivingly disposed, at least in part, to subject a rotatable turbine to a pressurized fluid flowing in the fluid passageway, thereby imparting a mechanical rotation to the turbine. The turbine is coupled to a generator so that the mechanical rotation of the turbine is transferred to a power output of the generator.

Abstract: A downhole mud motor (100) is disclosed which has an improved bearing mandrel (107) and a bearing stop (105) to transfer a larger percentage of the weight of a drill string to the bit. Also improved sealing systems (113) (114) (220) (515(706) for the transmission section and bearing section (116) (310) (117) (118) (119) prevent drilling mud from entering critical components. A piston stop is provided to prevent the piston from damaging other parts as the piston moves under pressure. Compensating pressure assembly (204) preferably including a disk (1408) is placed in the lower housing (108) to prevent pressure from building up in the bearing section (308). A combination of grooved ball seats (130) and circumferentially spaced balls (127) are provided in the transmission section (200) (207) to allow for greater flow of lubricant around the ball bearings.

  • Patent number: 6364038
Abstract: Improvements for a downhole flexible drive system for drilling high angle well holes or curved holes from the vertical to the horizontal with an ultra short radius to drill a horizontal drain hole. The improvements include a flexible shaft that connects the drive train of the system to a swivel joint attached inside the uphole tool joint of the system, that provide the drive train of the system the capability to carry part or all the tension loads on the system. An exhaust collar is provided with deflectors that direct excess drilling fluid up a well hole. A pump section is provided to insure drilling fluid flow over the face of a drill bit and the transport of cuttings. To increase flexibility and limit the length of inflexible sections of the system, a flexible tube to carry drilling fluids connects the bearing pack to the system.

  • Patent number: 6364034
Abstract: The apparatus has a housing which is secured to the lower end of a drilling motor body and carries an arbor that is secured to the output shaft of the motor. The arbor has three segments serially connected by gimbals. The upper segment is axially fixed by the bearings of the motor and has a lower end that extends when actuated to push the center segment downward. Axial movement of the center segment actuates a cam to move it laterally. The lower segment extends from the housing as an output shaft. It is arranged to tilt relative to the housing and its upper end is moved laterally by the gimbal connected center segment. The resulting tilt of the rotating axis of the output shaft causes an attached drill head to drill a deflected well bore.

Abstract: A downhole hydraulic motor consisting of an outer rim having six or eight lobes on the toothed inner surface, a rotor having four or six lobes respectively on the toothed outer surface as well as a number of planetary gears being constantly engaged with both the outer rim and the rotor and dividing the space between the rim and the rotor into a number of working chambers changing their volume with the rotation of the motor. The working fluid is supplied to the working chambers through channels both in the rotor and the side covers, one of which can slide inside the outer rim to allow adjustment of the gap between the ends of the planetary gears and the side covers.

  • Patent number: 6196336
Abstract: A drilling liner having a core bit at its bottom end is carried along with a pilot bit on an inner bottom hole assembly driven by a downhole mud motor. In one embodiment, the motor is powered by mud carried by an inner string. Alternatively, the inner string may be omitted and the flow of mud through the liner powers the motor: this requires a locking tool for locking the motor assembly to the outer assembly. Once an abnormally (high or low) pressured zone has been traversed, the liner is set as a casing, the inner assembly is pulled out, and drilling may be resumed using a conventional tool. Directional drilling is accomplished by having an MWD device for providing directional information and having directional devices on the inner and outer assembly. These include retractable steering pads. Expandable bits, under-reamers and jetting nozzles may also be used in the drilling process.

  • Patent number: 6102138
Abstract: A drillstring pressure-modulation valve which is usable in combination with a downhole drilling motor and a drillstring thruster to compensate for changes in pressure drop through the drilling motor which normally occur during drilling. When conditions change during drilling, which in turn changes the pressure drop through the drilling motor, the drillstring pressure-modulation valve compensates for such changes to minimize the effect of such changes on the operation of the thruster and the resulting WOB created by the thruster. The modulation valve has a feature which allows it to find automatically a balanced preload condition for the main needle valve, the primary functional element within the modulation valve, each time the rig pumps are turned off and then turned on. The modulation valve is fully self-contained, and is assembled as part of the bottomhole assembly.

Abstract: An adjustable bend connection is provided which desirably extends from the power section of a downhole progressing-cavity-type mud motor. The joint is secured internally so that any reverse rotation of the bend housings that may occur does not result in undoing the bend connection. Torque is transmitted separately from the portion of the connection which is used to secure the angle selected. The output shaft from the mud motor extends internally through the bend connection and through the components which retain the preselected angle. A tool can be inserted with the bit removed to secure or to change the angle desired.

  • Patent number: 5857531
Abstract: The bottom hole assembly of the present invention includes a drill bit driven by a positive displacement drilling motor, the motor being constructed of tubular housings, one of said housings having a bend so as to cause the bit to drill directionally, another housing containing a rotor and stator to generate power, and a flexible section between the power generation housing and the bend. A stabilizer is disposed on one end of the flexible section for engaging the wall of the borehole and the housing with the bend includes a wear pad for engaging the lower side of the borehole. The bottom hole assembly contacts the borehole at three contact points, namely at the stabilizer, the wear pad, and the drill bit, for producing the necessary build-up rate, along with the bend, and thus the curvature of the borehole being drilled.
