    Abstract: A downhole drill bit drive motor assembly which provides a bilateral low resistance path from the upper end of a downhole drill bit drive motor to the lower end of such a motor by employing an insulated wire or group of several wires through the rotor of the motor. The drive motors provide a drive torque to a drill bit based on the flow of drilling fluids through the motor and includes an outer case, a motor stator, a motor rotor, a coupling to connect the motor rotor to an output shaft and a bearing to support both axial and radial loads. Fixed electrical contacts are provided at the upper end of the drill bit drive motor to provide connection to wireline for transmission of data from that point to the surface or other higher points. Rotary electrical contacts that provide continuous electrical contact as a rotary portion rotates with respect to a stationary portion are provided at the upper, lower, or both ends of the rotor.

In addition to generating electricity, the fuel cell produces a byproduct liquid, such as water, which can be expelled from the power supply into the well despite substantial pressure, such as hydrostatic pressure, in the well. The fuel cell also generates heat which can be dissipated into the well through the wall of a housing of the power supply. The byproduct liquid can be circulated through the fuel cell to accomplish or assist in this heat dissipation.

The drill bit (106) of the drill unit is driven rotatably by an electric motor (111,112) or reciprocably by a linear electric motor (125). The drill unit can be of two relatively slidable parts, with fluid pressure, which may be generated within the unit (189) axially loading the drill bit. Drilling forms can be resisted by clamps (129) clamping the unit and/or the drill string to the drill hole wall. The drilling direction can be adjusted by use of these clamps.

    Abstract: A low-cost retrievable light-weight high-speed thin-kerf reversible electrically-driven core-sampling method and apparatus that is independent of the weight of any drill pipe, drill collars, or any other heavy cylindrical or tubular conduit associated with the coring operation. The flow direction of electric current to the direct-current electric motor of the core-sampling assembly is automatically reversed at frequent intervals so as to cause corresponding reversals in the direction of rotation of its core bit, resulting in the cancellation of any lateral forces on the core bit produced by reactive torque created during the coring operation, since such forces are alternately applied in opposite directions, thus, eliminating any corehole deviation that, otherwise, might occur from the lateral force created by the reactive torque of a down-hole motor that is rotated in just one direction.

The cablehead is passed through a low angle side entrance in a side entry sub into the drill string. The cartridge assembly is thereafter tightened about the cable to seal against pressure loss. The effective length of the flexible line is increased in corresponding with the increase in length of the drill string by connection of the flexible line to a carrier by which the line is carried in a coiled condition occupying a distance longitudinally of the drill string shorter than the actual length of the line. The carrier is constructed to pay out the different turns of the coiled line successively from coiled condition to a straightened condition in a manner progressively increasing the effective length of the line. Preferably, the line is paid out from the carrier by pulling the carrier toward the outer end of the drill string while an inner end of the line is connected to the instrument in the string.

During the operation of adding additional drill string members to the drill string, the electrical wireline is encased by the wireline protector thereby guarding it against damage by any slippage of the slip members. The wireline protector includes an elongated section that is arranged to extend through the opening in the rotary table through which the drill string passes in such a manner so as not to interfere with the drill string and a second section substantially perpendicular to the elongated section. The elongated section has an elongated opening into which the portion of the wireline passing through the rotary table can be inserted so that it is substantially surrounded and guarded by the elongated section. The second section is arranged in engagement with the rotary table so as to maintain the wireline protector in place.

    Abstract: A downhole drilling system utilizes a non-rotating kelly bushing for locking in the torque created in the drill string by the downhole drilling motor. The kelly bushing prevents rotational movement of the kelly secured to the drill string on which the downhole motor is attached. The kelly bushing includes a torque mechanism for enabling the kelly and the attached drill string to move in a forward direction into the hole being drilled while prohibiting any rotational movement. The torque mechanism includes a pair of rollers which are adapted to non-rotatably receive and vertically guide the kelly therebetween. The spacing between the rollers is adjustable to accommodate different sized kellys. A guide mechanism is provided in the kelly bushing for enabling an electrical wire to be attached to either the downhole motor or a sensing mechanism located in the area of the downhole motor for feeding back to the surface appropriate electrical signals indicative of certain drilling operations.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for earth boring using a rotary drilling rig and drilling string for mounting a bottom hole electrical motor to rotate a drill bit to form the borehole. Electrical power from an electrical power source at the earth surface is communicated to the electric motor by conductor lines positioned in the bore of the drill string and having releasable supporting connectors to enable adding and removing of lengths of conductor lines as desired. An electrical conductor swivel unit is mounted in the drilling string to enable rotation of the drilling string while operating the electric motor and an extendable electrical connector is provided in the kelly to compensate for variation in conductor lengths while effecting electrical contact with the conductors.
