  • Patent number: 6497296
Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling machine for generating a bore with a drill string. The machine includes a frame defining a thrust axis. A rotational drive head for rotating the drill string is mounted on the frame. A thrust mechanism is provided for moving the rotational drive head in a first direction along the thrust axis to push the drill string into the ground, and a second direction along the thrust axis to pull the drill string from the ground. The horizontal directional drilling machine also includes an anchoring arrangement connected to the frame. In one embodiment, the anchoring arrangement includes a stake-down unit that is pivotally movable about a pivot axis that is generally transversely oriented relative to the thrust axis. The stake-down unit includes a power auger, and a stake-down actuator for moving the power auger toward and away from the ground. The anchoring arrangement also includes a tilt actuator for pivoting the stake-down unit about the pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 6481510
Abstract: A directional drill for transport via rail tracks and railwheels associated with the directional drill to an operating location. The directional drill has a first frame associated with a set of pneumatic tires for movement of the directional drill onto and off of the tracks and, when removed from the tracks, for movement to the operating location. A second frame is rotatably attached to the first frame and allows the drilling configuration of the second frame to be more nearly horizontal relative to the first frame. Hydraulic lines move during drilling and are maintained in a predetermined configuration to reduce vibration and chaffing.

  • Patent number: 6464020
Abstract: An single apparatus to drill and lift core specimens from an aggregate field includes a frame structure that can be deployed to a workface and is adapted to hydraulically deploy a rotating core drilling bit upon that workface to cut a core specimen from the substrate. The hydraulic deployment of the drill bit is self aligning and does not require complex alignment steps to ensure the maximum cutting efficiency and lifetime of the bit. The same apparatus that can be used to drive and deploy the drill bit can also be adapted to receive and lift the as-cut core specimen from the newly created hole in the substrate. Once lifted, the received specimen can be positioned out of the work area so that work within the newly created circular hole can progress.

  • Publication number: 20020112891
Abstract: A drive mechanism for a subterranean boring machine includes a drive motor, primary and secondary drive wheels, a drive sprocket and an idler sprocket attached to the primary and secondary drive wheels, respectively, and a chain operatively extending between the drive sprocket and the idler sprocket. The drive mechanism is movably mounted on the sled of a subterranean boring machine that rolls along a track, the drive mechanism being biased against the track by a set of springs to cause the primary and secondary drive wheels to frictionally engage the track. The drive motor selectively and rotatably drives the primary drive wheel which, in turn, drives the secondary drive wheel. The drive mechanism translates the sled along the track under conditions when the sled is not driving a pipe into a subterranean location. The drive mechanism is configured to be largely self-contained to permit existing sleds to be retrofitted with the drive mechanism.

Abstract: A power feed system for a rotary drill includes a hollow tubular derrick having a powerhead connected to a flexible cable moved by a double rod hydraulic cylinder assembly. The derrick includes fixed and movable sheaving assemblies. The hydraulic rod assembly, the fixed and movable assemblies operate substantially within the derrick interior. A guide wheel on the movable sheaving contacts the derrick to maintain axial alignment of the hydraulic rods. Pivotable connections between the cable and the movable sheaves automatically adjust for cable fleet angle change, as the movable sheaves travel, maintaining axial alignment of the hydraulic rods and avoiding introducing torque into the cylinder rods.

The device is comprised of a housing and a mandrel rotatably supported within the housing such that an annular space is defined between the housing and the mandrel, wherein one of the housing and the mandrel is connectable with the drill string such that the drill string rotates therewith. A clutch assembly is positioned within the annular space which is actuatable between an engaged condition in which the clutch assembly engages the housing and the mandrel in order to inhibit the rotation of the mandrel relative to the housing and a disengaged condition in which the clutch assembly disengages the housing and the mandrel in order to permit the rotation of the mandrel relative to the housing. The clutch assembly is actuated to the engaged condition by a pressure exerted by the drilling fluid.
