  • Patent number: 4484643
Abstract: A gas-liquid-solids separation system for use with a drilling device includes a surge tank for holding drilling efflux comprising gas, liquid and solids, and adapted for mounting on a drilling device in a position for having a drill shaft extending therethrough. A stuffing box attached to a back side of the surge tank means and configured for enabling passage of the drill shaft therethrough prevents the drilling efflux from escaping the surge tank. A flange attached to the front side of the surge tank and aligned with the stuffing box for allowing passage of the drill shaft therethrough provides a seal between the surge tank and a borehole casing to enable the drilling efflux to flow into the surge tank means. An agitator disposed within the surge tank maintains suspension of the solids within the liquid, and a gas cyclone in fluid communication with the surge tank withdraws gas from the surge tank and separates any entrained liquid therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4416340
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, the drilling head includes a body or spool having a flow bore and a removable side outlet. Upon removal of the side outlet, the drilling head will pass through most rotary tables. The drilling head further includes a closure member for closing the annulus between that portion of the drilling head above the side outlet and a drive tube, such as a kelly, extending through the drilling head flow bore. The closure member includes a nonrotating support tube and a rotating seal tube adapted to form a nonrotating seal with the drive tube. The seal tube is rotatably supported by bearings within the support tube. The closure member is small enough to pass through even rotary tables that are too small to pass the drilling head.A segmented clamp secures the closure member to the drilling head body around one end of the flow bore. The clamp includes at least two segments, for fast actuation, having one end connected to a variable length linkage.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method of drilling an oil well so that the large diameter casing initially employed can be salvaged and reused which is attainable by effecting a temporary seal between the bore hole and casing so that a dual function is attained, firstly the seal forces the mud return up to the surface inside the casing and secondly the area between the bore hole and casing is closed to cuttings cement and other matter which may fall into a bore hole and cause the casing to become secured to the walls of the bore hole and prohibit the withdrawal of the casing from the bore hole. When it is desired to remove the casing the temporary seal is broken and the casing raised axially of the bore hole.
