With Above-ground Guide For Relatively Advancing Tool Patents (Class 175/220)
  • Patent number: 7658242
Abstract: A hole coring system for drilling large diameter holes with a handheld tool. The drill bit is guided by a mandrel attached to the concrete and serves as a central guidepost that ensures precise centering of the drill bit. Commonly available tools may be used to rotate the drill bit. A lever arm may be attached to the tool and used to resist any torquing action. Additionally, a brace may be attached to the lever arm which may be used to resist any torquing action.

  • Patent number: 7617888
Abstract: A pilot tube drive assembly used with an auger boring machine includes a height adjustment mechanism for aligning the pilot tube path of travel with an axis about which an auger of the machine rotates during trenchless installation of underground pipe. A drive mechanism mounted on a drive assembly frame drives the pilot tube to form a pilot hole in the ground for guiding the auger. The height adjustment mechanism may include shorter and taller mounting assemblies which are typically removably mounted on the drive assembly frame. The shorter and taller mounting assemblies may be alternately mounted on the frame at the same location. Typically, the mounting assemblies are removably mounted on spaced rails of an auger boring machine frame via mounting legs which are removably inserted into openings in the spaced rails by an actuating mechanism between the rails.

  • Patent number: 7581600
Abstract: An improved method of forming a trenchless flow line is provided. The method includes support of the boring tool at each sight relief hole using a hook extending downwardly into the hole so as to overcome the force of gravity on the tool during the pilot hole drilling step. Then, a back reaming tool is connected to the end of the boring tool, and the pipe is connected to the reaming tool, such that the reaming tool reams the pilot hole to a larger diameter ahead of the pipe, which is pulled through the hole with the reaming tool. Drilling fluid is supplied during the reaming process to form a slurry which is pushed ahead of the pipe and upwardly into the sight relief holes, as the pipe is pulled through the reamed hole.

Abstract: A ground drilling machine includes a machine body a rod propelling device, a rod exchanging device and a support unit provided for the machine body for supporting the rod exchanging device. The rod propelling device has a frame movably mounted to the machine body. The frame is slidable on a support portion provided for the machine body. The rod exchanging device is attached to the frame of the rod propelling device via a transverse mounting member. The rod exchanging device is also supported on the support unit so as to be slidable on the support unit along with the movement of the rod propelling device without changing of its relative position to the rod propelling device. The rod exchanging device can be made light and compact because the rod exchanging device is supported by the support unit which is provided for the machine body and accordingly a large bending load is not applied to the main body portion of the rod exchanging device.

Abstract: A tool for boring has a first shaft for drivingly linking at a first end to a portable rotatable machine. At a second end, the tool has a fastener to which a modular auger section can be drivingly linked. A second shaft of the tool has an outer surface to which a radially inwardly extending edge of a helical flight is attached. A cylindrical collar is attached to a radially outwardly extending peripheral edge of the flight and is mounted radially outwardly of the second shaft. An insulator interposed between the shafts electrically insulates the shafts from each other. The shafts can be unlinked through a shear pin breaking in response to a predetermined amount of relative torque to the shafts.

  • Patent number: 6494273
Abstract: The present invention relates to an elevator (10, 134, 136, 150, 162, 186), particularly a single joint elevator, for supporting tubular members such as drill pipe (118), borehole casing and/or production tubing, for use in downhole operations. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, an elevator (10) is generally elliptical shaped, and comprises a housing (12), a lock (14), lifting eyes (16) and a hinge (18). The housing comprises first and second portions (20, 22), pivotally coupled via the hinge (18), which together define an upper ring, elliptical in cross-section, and a tapering, generally truncated cone-shaped lower portion. The tapered lower portion of the elevator (10) ensures that the elevator (10) does not become caught or fouled upon a Vee door, or a pipe discharge ramp (122), on to which the pipe (118) supported by the elevator (10) is to be discharged during, for example, the “running-in” of the pipe (118) into a borehole of an onshore or offshore well.

Abstract: A self-erecting rig is adapted for deployment on a platform and includes hydraulic jacks and rails. The rig structure is made up of stacked, interlocking modules having open areas pre-fitted with well equipment such as mud pumps, mud tanks, and power packs. The rails are disposed on a platform and guide the modules to the hydraulic jacks. Hydraulic jacks, also fixed onto the platform, are configured to releasably engage and elevate the modules. During deployment, the jacks engage a module and hoist it to a pre-determined height. While the engaged module is suspended, another module is slid immediately below. After the two modules interlock, the jacks repeat the process.

  • Patent number: 6343662
Abstract: A multi-purpose drilling rig has a movable pipe support cradle which moves horizontally to transfer drill pipe from a storage area to the well being drilled, and vice versa. The cradle travels along a roof platform supported by load-bearing hydraulic lifting rams. Raising or lowering the lifting rams raises or lowers the roof platform, along with the drill pipe suspended from the cradle. Structural towers stabilize the lifting rams against buckling and lateral loads. Supplementary lifting capacity is provided cradle-mounted roof rams having pistons which may extend downward from the cradle, with the drill pipe suspended from a yoke interconnecting the roof ram pistons. For offshore drilling, a control system senses fluctuations in rig elevation due to wave action, and automatically adjusts extends or retracts the rams as required to maintain constant load on the drill bit. Also disclosed is a method of drilling which utilizes vertical and lateral movement of the cradle and top drive.
