Abstract: A system for steering the direction of a borehole advanced by cutting action of a rotary drill bit by periodically varying action of a drill bit while continuously rotating a drill string to which the drill bit is operationally attached. The steering system comprises a bit perturbation device cooperating with a bent housing subsection and operationally connected to the drill string and to the drill bit. • Patent number: 7717197
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for keeping a down hole drilling tool vertically uses a pendulum (36). The pendulum (36) controls flow from outlets (34) of drilling fluid chambers (30), providing drilling fluid to centralizer (24) activating pistons (26) acting upon centralizer blades (24). When the outer housing (12) deviates from a vertical orientation, the pendulum (36) swings by force of gravity to assume an angularly offset pivotal position. This adjusts the hydraulic pressure in one or two of the outlets (34) for one or two of the drilling fluid chambers (30) resulting in a change in the hydraulic force acting upon one or two of the pistons (26) causing one of the centralizers (24) to change their position to urge the outer housing (12) back toward the vertical position until the pendulum (36) again assumes the concentric pivotal position and the balanced pressure equilibrium in the drilling fluid chambers (30) is restored.

Abstract: A testing apparatus comprising: a chamber (5) having an inlet (6) and an outlet (16); a measuring device (4), at least a part of which is provided within said chamber; wherein the inlet is arranged to direct fluid onto said part of the measuring device within the chamber in order to clean the measuring device during start up. Thus the density or viscosity of drilling mud may be continuously monitored. Preferred embodiments include an outlet valve such as a ball valve (7) with a bore defined therein. The bore allows fluid to flow therethrough even in a valve “closed” position and so generates the preferred back pressure whilst minimising the risk that the valve will block. A pressure activated drain valve (9) is also provided to substantially empty the chamber when not in use. When the apparatus is reactivated, an inlet tube is adapted to jet air and then fluid at the measuring device in order to remove debris therefrom. Thus the apparatus has the important benefit of self cleaning during start-up.

Abstract: The advancement angle of a borehole cut by a rotary drill bit of the type which forms a cylindrical sidewall, a drill face and a circumferentially extending gage corner, is controlled by removing a different amount of the gage corner material over a selected partial arc of the gage corner circumference during each rotation of the drill bit. The different amount of material removed causes the remaining arc of the gage corner circumference to apply a slight lateral force on the drill bit, thus forcing the drill bit in a desired direction. Gage corner removal apparatus include a hydraulic fluid jet impinging upon the gage corner. Selectively activating the gage corner removal apparatus during each of a plurality of subsequent drill bit revolutions results in a cumulative angle change effect. Control apparatus is attached to the drill string at a position at which gravity induced sag causes the drill string to contact the low side portion of the borehole.
