Abstract: A core catcher for a coring tool comprises a sleeve comprising a longitudinal axis and at least one slit extending at least partially along a height of the sleeve between an upper end and a lower end thereof. The at least one slit separates a first side surface and a second side surface of the sleeve. The first and second side surfaces are located a first distance and a second distance from the longitudinal axis, respectively, measured in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis. The core catcher further comprises a bridging element extending at least partially about a sleeve perimeter. The bridging element operatively couples movement of the first side surface and the second side surface to limit a difference between the first and second distances as a width of the at least one slit that separates the first side surface and the second side surface increases or decreases.

  • Patent number: 5253720
Abstract: The invention is a coring device which has features to seal off from the well fluids prior to taking of the specimen. The apparatus can be hydraulically or pneumatically actuated to move an inner string which is connected to a core barrel. Prior to moving the core barrel, an outer tube is sealingly pushed into the formation. Once the outer tube has been set into the formation, the inner tube drives the core barrel into the formation, leaving behind a rabbit. A clam shell is located at the forward end which stays open as the core barrel is driven into the formation and closes as the core barrel is withdrawn into the outer tube to retain the core. The pneumatic or hydraulic pressure continues to be applied to the inner string as the core barrel is withdrawn into the outer tube. Upon full retraction of the core barrel into the outer tube, a ball valve is actuated to seal off the core barrel. At that time, the hydraulic or pneumatic pressure is removed and the apparatus is pulled to the surface.

  • Patent number: 4664205
Abstract: An axial bore is defined throughout the hydraulic lift inner barrel. This axial bore is communicated with the interior of the inner tube thereby allowing the interior of the inner tube to be flushed prior to initiation of the coring operation. When the coring operation is begun, flow of drilling fluid to the interior of the inner tube is prevented by allowing a ball dropped within the drill string to seat within a plug through which the communicating axial bore is defined. Once the flow of drilling fluid to the interior of the inner tube is stopped, the coring operation can begin. After the coring operation is completed, a second ball is dropped and allowed to seat within an inner mandrel through which the axial bore of the coring tool is also defined. Once the axial bore of the inner mandrel is closed, drilling fluid is forced into an expansion chamber within a telescopic piston disposed circumferentially outside of the inner mandrel. The piston is connected to the inner tube.

  • Patent number: 4605075
Abstract: A fragmented or unconsolidated core can be cut and retained within a coring tool without substantial disturbance of the core by the use of a shrouded core catcher. A core catcher is concentrically disposed within the coring tool and outside of a smooth, cylindrical sleeve telescopically disposed inside of the core catcher. The core catcher in turn is coupled to a lower assembly which can be selectively longitudinally fixed within the coring tool, but which is otherwise temporarily coupled to the sleeve. As the sleeve is longitudinally pulled upward after the completion of the coring operation, the lower assembly becomes longitudinally fixed within the coring tool and the sleeve, which heretofore has fully covered and concealed the core catcher, begins to be withdrawn from the core catcher, leaving it unconcealed. Ultimately, the core catcher is at least partially uncovered, thereby permitting activation and contact between the core catcher and the core disposed within the coring tool.

  • Patent number: 4553613
Abstract: An automatically operable hydraulic lift inner barrel is devised to lift the inner tube of the core barrel on a drill string. An inner mandrel is axially disposed within the outer tube of the coring tool. An outer piston which is selectively locked to the inner mandrel is telescopically and concentrically disposed about the inner mandrel. Fluid is selectively diverted from the outer tube into the inner mandrel and inside the outer piston. An inner locking piston within the inner mandrel responds to the hydraulic pressure to unlock the outer piston from the inner mandrel. The outer piston is then longitudinally displaced by the hydraulic pressure thereby lifting the inner tube which is connected to it. After the outer piston has moved a predetermined distance, the hydraulic pressure supplied to the inner mandrel and inside the outer piston reaches a second predetermined magnitude. Burst disks are then blown thereby relieving the hydraulic pressure within the outer piston inner mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4552229
Abstract: A mechanism for catching and holding a core within an inner tube in a drill string includes a slidable core catcher and a full closure core catcher. The slidable core catcher is disposed within the inner tube and is coupled to an inner tube ring concentrically mounted on the outside of the inner tube. The inner tube ring and the slidable core catcher are connected to each other by means of a shear pin slidable within a slot defined in the inner tube. An outer tube ring is connected to the outer tube concentrically disposed about the inner tube. When the outer tube ring contacts the inner tube ring as the inner tube is lifted, the inner tube ring is moved downwardly with respect to the inner tube, thereby pulling the core catcher with it. As the core catcher moves downwardly it is compressed by an inside conical surface provided near the end of the inner tube. This serves to effectuate operation of the slideable core catcher.

  • Patent number: 4545432
Abstract: A wash-over type down hole retrieving device or fishing tool is described, consisting of a hollow cylindrical body having an open lower end. The body has concentric inner and outer walls, defining an annular space in which an annular piston can force down an annular sleeve of a malleable alloy having downwardly extending finger-like formations. The inside of the lower end of the outer wall is of cupped configuration effective to deflect the fingers inwards and over the open end of the body so as to trap and retain an object for retrieval. The annular piston is forced down hydraulically by dropping a diverter ball valve. Cutting teeth are optionally provided on the outer periphery of the lower end of the outer wall, on a detachable shoe.

  • Patent number: 4518051
Abstract: The present invention provides a percussion actuated wire line sampler for use in a drill string. The sampler includes a core barrel adapted to be inserted into the drill string and to be freely movable therein. A hydraulic percussion device (16) also insertable and freely movable in the drill string is connected to the core barrel. A downhole mud turbine (20) is provided and is responsive to drilling mud pressure to actuate the percussion device to drive the core barrel out of the end of the drill string into the material to be sampled.

  • Patent number: 4518050
Abstract: The present invention provides disclosure of a core sampler that includes a rotatably extending outer barrel containing a relatively non-rotating core barrel which is extendable with the outer barrel in response to drilling mud pressure into the material to be cored by a mud turbine which rotates the outer barrel. The core sampler may be run in and out of a drill string on a wire line.

  • Patent number: 4014393
Abstract: An apparatus for coupling to the base of a vertically suspended core barrel inside a drilling rig for controllably receiving intact the columnar mass of core material contained therein. A tubular housing is provided for connecting to the barrel and includes a piston element slidably positioned therein for abutting engagement with and underlying support of the core sample to be received from the barrel. The piston element includes expandable side walls adapted for frictional engagement with the side walls of the tubular housing. Control means are provided for controlling the expansion of the piston walls, the resultant friction produced therealong and the preferred rate of movement of the core into the tubular housing under the force of gravity. The construction of the tubular housing permits the core received therein to be retained in its original extracted condition while facilitating the handling, subsequent examination and analysis thereof.

  • Patent number: 3949819
Abstract: A device for taking soil samples from a hole drilled in the ground by another tool, and for drilling shallow holes. The device comprises a pneumatic impact mechanism rigidly connected with a soil sampling socket provided with an appliance for holding the soil sample in the socket when the latter is being extracted from the hole. This appliance is made in the form of an elastic inflatable element which, being inflated with compressed gas, covers completely the inner cross-sectional area of the socket, thus making it possible to take complete and high-quality samples irrespective of the type and condition of the soil.
