Patent number: 8365839Abstract: Device, method and system for substantially simultaneous injection of air or sealant into a borehole resulting from extraction of a sampling assembly from a formation. An auxiliary conduit is attached along a sampling tube. Fluids, including a slurry or compressed air, are injected into the borehole as the sampling assembly is extracted. Injection of compressed air reduces or removes the suction of the vacuum forming below the retracting assembly. Introduction of a bentonite slurry seals the borehole that is opening as the sampling assembly withdraws. Fluids containing disinfectants or nutrients may be injected into the borehole as the assembly withdraws. Fluid flow of the auxiliary conduit may be used to activate a cut and cap mechanism for containing the sampled core. The auxiliary conduit is formed not to interfere with the insertion of sampling tube into the formation and is outfitted with mechanisms that keep the conduit closed during descent.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2010Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Inventor: Bijan Danesh

Publication number: 20090000822Abstract: A rock core removal method and apparatus allows efficient, safe, and reliable removal of a rock core sample. An inner collet tube and an outer ground tube, within a drill tube, protect the core sample during drilling. At depth, the collet tube is raised with respect to the ground tube so that the conical wall of the ground tube pushes constricting fingers on the collet tube inward, gripping the core sample within. The collet tube and ground tube are then raised, rotated, or raised and rotated, applying the necessary force to break the core sample off of the substrate. After retracting the tubes, the collet tube is lowered with respect to the ground tube to release the core sample. An ejection rod then pushes the core sample out of the collet tube. The ground tube may also act as the actuating means for a quick-change drill-bit release feature.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2008Publication date: January 1, 2009Inventor: Thomas M. Myrick

Patent number: 7121356Abstract: A “sod saver” tool for digging to acquire an object buried in the ground, and a non-metallic scraping tool utilized when carefully examining the soil. The sod saver tool includes a main cylindrical body rotated about its longitudinal axis for digging a substantially cylindrical plug of soil from the ground, the object being contained in the plug of soil, and a plurality of circumferentially-disposed resilient non-metallic fingers located at a bottom portion of the main cylindrical body. When the digging of the plug is being performed, the resilient fingers tend to spread radially outward from the longitudinal axis of the main cylindrical body, being deflected away from directly hitting and scratching the buried object, tend to generally direct the soil upwardly into the main cylindrical body, and tend to cause the plug to be substantially-compacted and cylindrical. The compacted plug may be easily reinserted into a hole in the ground.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2004Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Inventor: Kenneth E. Michael

Patent number: 6644424Abstract: The invention concerns a core barrel, in particular for oil exploration, comprising a string, an external tube (2) fixed at the front end of the string, a core bit mounted on a front section (3A) of the external tube, and an internal tube assembly (8) mounted in the external tube and comprising hydrodynamic means transforming a core sampling line pressure into a load thrusting said assembly towards the core barrel front, the front section of the external tube being mounted axially sliding, limited by front and rear stop elements (12A, 12P), in a rear section (3P) of the same external tube to project therefrom longitudinally, the assembly comprising a support stop (14) arranged to thrust selectively forward the front section of the external tube, means being arranged between the inner tube (9) proper and said front section such that the latter can be driven in rotation about its longitudinal axis independently of said internal tube, a motor (7) capable of driving the core bit in rotation relative to the stringType: GrantFiled: September 14, 2001Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: Philippe Fanuel

Patent number: 6550549Abstract: A mechanism for breaking off and retaining a core sample of a drill drilled into a ground substrate has an outer drill tube and an inner core break-off tube sleeved inside the drill tube. The break-off tube breaks off and retains the core sample by a varying geometric relationship of inner and outer diameters with the drill tube. The inside diameter (ID) of the drill tube is offset by a given amount with respect to its outer diameter (OD). Similarly, the outside diameter (OD) of the break-off tube is offset by the same amount with respect to its inner diameter (ID). When the break-off tube and drill tube are in one rotational alignment, the two offsets cancel each other such that the drill can operate the two tubes together in alignment with the drill axis. When the tubes are rotated 180 degrees to another positional alignment, the two offsets add together causing the core sample in the break-off tube to be displaced from the drill axis and applying shear forces to break off the core sample.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2001Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Honeybee Robotics, Ltd.Inventor: Thomas M. Patent number: 6360829Abstract: The soil sampler of this invention is mounted on a wheeled vehicle and includes a frame having a pivotal mast which is movable between an upright position and a horizontally disposed position. An elongated, hollow soil probe is longitudinally movably mounted on the mast so that the probe may be inserted into the ground to collect a soil sample. When the sample has been collected in the soil probe, the probe is raised from the ground and the mast is moved from its upright position to its horizontally disposed position. The soil sample in the probe is automatically dumped from the probe when the mast has been moved to its horizontally disposed position. The soil sample is collected in a receptacle position below the probe with the receptacle being divided into at least two compartments. The soil sampling probe also includes means for indicating the true position of the soil surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2000Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Inventors: Ronnie J. Naber, Gregory G. Patent number: 5957221Abstract: A coring apparatus permitting the taking of a non-rotating core sample and testing of same, as by NMR, prior to breakage and ejection from the apparatus. A core barrel is suspended from a rotating outer sleeve by one or more bearing assemblies which permit the core barrel to remain stationary during rotation of the sleeve with attached core bit for cutting the core. A core test device is fixed with respect to the core barrel on the outside thereof to test the core as it proceeds through the barrel. The apparatus optionally includes a directional detecting device such as an inclinometer and a compact set of circumferentially-spaced steering arms for changing the direction of the apparatus during coring.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Arthur D. Patent number: 4694916Abstract: A continuous coring drill bit having a body forming external lands for support of cutting elements such as industrial diamonds and grooves for conducting drilling fluid during drilling. The body further forms an internal cavity receiving a tubular core breaker in freely rotatable relation therein and also forms a central throat receiving a core as the drilling operation continues. The core breaker is provided with an internal buttress and is eccentrically mounted within the body such that rotation of the body induces lateral oscillation of the buttress causing it to fracture the core into small sections. By reverse circulation the core sections are transported upwardly through the drill string to the surface for separation from the drilling fluid and analysis by geologists.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1986Date of Patent: September 22, 1987Assignee: R.
