  • Publication number: 20090229885
Abstract: A core catcher includes a catcher rod removably attachable to a core drill. The catcher rod is inserted through a pilot hole in a substrate from which a core is to be removed. A catching element is removably attachable such as by clamping the catching element to a distal end of the catcher rod on an underside of the substrate. A bearing may be disposed between the catching element and the substrate. When severed from the substrate, the core falls only a short distance along the catcher rod and comes to rest on the bearing and the catching element. Thus, the core is inhibited from falling to a floor or ground below the substrate. A bucket may also be supported on the distal end of the catcher rod in order to collect cutting fluid.

  • Patent number: 5146999
Abstract: The application is directed to a shoe assembly with a core catcher for retaining a core of an unconsolidated rock or earth formation in a coring barrel. The shoe assembly includes a tube section adapted to fit removably within the core barrel near the coring bit. Two sets of hinged fingers are attached to the inner surface of the tube section on respective circumferential lines which are displaced from each other. The fingers are movable about the hinged ends between an open position in which the fingers do not significantly occlude the passageway, and a closed position in which the fingers do occlude the passageway. The fingers are biased toward the closed position by means of respective springs associated with each finger. When in the closed position, the two sets of fingers together occlude at least 90% of the cross-section of the passageway. The fingers are urged to the open position by the action of a core moving through the coring barrel away from the drilling end.

  • Patent number: 4930587
Abstract: A coring tool comprises a core cutting section and an actuating section disposed thereabove. The core cutting section includes axially telescoping outer and inner barrels. The inner barrel includes a jaw carrier which carries pivotable core-catching jaws normally covered along their radially inner sides by a driver sleeve. When the driver sleeve is raised by the actuator section the jaws are uncovered. Thereafter, the driver sleeve raises the jaw carrier to bring the jaws into contact with a stationary inclined jaw-deflecting surface to force the jaws laterally inwardly through the core. The actuator section relies upon fluid pressure to release for movement a vertically risible member which is mechanically lifted by a drill string to transmit vertical forces to the driver sleeve from a drill string.
