Frangible Or Discardable Element Patents (Class 175/276)
  • Patent number: 9689208
Abstract: A method and system for a hole opener are provided. The hole opener includes a shaft including a plurality of axial slots formed in an outer periphery and spaced circumferentially about the shaft, a plate coupled to the outer periphery between each pair of slots, the plate including fastening wings that extend radially outwardly from each circumferential end of the plate, and a blade extending radially outwardly from a respective one of the plurality of axial slots between a fastening wing of each of adjacent plates, the blade coupled to each fastening wing.

  • Patent number: 8936112
Abstract: A downhole tool may include a generally hollow piston having a trigger element extending therefrom, the piston configured to slide along an axial cavity extending through a tubular body of the tool. The trigger element may move from a first position where the trigger engages a support on the body and the piston is fixed, to a second position where the trigger disengages and the piston is released. The tool may also include a generally tubular relief sleeve releasably coupled with the piston using a shear pin, while the trigger element is in the first position, and disposed between the trigger and an extension of the piston, to allow the sleeve to slide between the trigger and the extension after shearing of the pin. The piston, sleeve and pin may be configured to allow the sleeve to release from the piston in response to the shearing of the pin.

  • Patent number: 8365843
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention, a downhole tool string component has at least one end adapted to connect to an adjacent tool sting component and a bore adapted to accommodate a flow of drilling fluid. A turbine is disposed within the bore and an actuating assembly is arranged such that a clutch may mechanically connect and disconnect with the turbine.

  • Patent number: 6594881
Abstract: A torque limiting device that allows a drill string to rotate relative to the cutting structure of the bit when a predetermined torque is applied between the cutting structure of the drill bit and the drill string. The torque limiting device utilizes a retaining member which restricts rotational movement of a first component of the torque limiting device relative to a second component. When a sufficient torque load is placed on the cutting structure of the drill bit, the retaining member allows rotational movement of the first component relative to the second component and allows the drill string to continue to rotate relative to the cutting structure of the bit until the torque is sufficiently reduced. The torque limiting device may be an integral part of a drill bit, may be a separate device attached between the drill string and the drill bit or between the drill string and a downhole motor, or may be part of a near-bit sub or incorporated in a downhole motor.

  • Patent number: 5595247
Abstract: Retrievable window cutting apparatus and method include a whipstock assembly 160 and anchor assembly 10. Whipstock assembly 160 and anchor assembly 10 contract radially inwardly to pass through tubing string T and then expand radially outwardly to operate in casing C. Upper and lower independently moveable slips 24 and 26 engage casing C. Whipstock assembly 160 includes hinge assembly 170 that can be set for operation with a milling assembly 270. Cooperation between shear members in setting tool WSS, working string adaptor 180, hinge assembly 170, and anchor assembly 10 provide for keeping whipstock assembly 160 and anchor assembly 10 in a contracted position for passing downwardly through tubing T, expansion in casing C, and subsequent retrieval through tubing T.
