Abstract: A downhole tool may include a generally hollow piston having a trigger element extending therefrom, the piston configured to slide along an axial cavity extending through a tubular body of the tool. The trigger element may move from a first position where the trigger engages a support on the body and the piston is fixed, to a second position where the trigger disengages and the piston is released. The tool may also include a generally tubular relief sleeve releasably coupled with the piston using a shear pin, while the trigger element is in the first position, and disposed between the trigger and an extension of the piston, to allow the sleeve to slide between the trigger and the extension after shearing of the pin. The piston, sleeve and pin may be configured to allow the sleeve to release from the piston in response to the shearing of the pin.

  • Patent number: 8360173
Abstract: An underreamer that can be assembled easily is formed from a tubular body having a flow tube running to a distal end delivering fluid which moves an actuator against the underreamer arms which are hinged to a moveable stop block and stopped to positively seat the arm at the end of a key slot to rigidly hold the underreamer arm in full extension during operations. Once hydraulic pressure is released, a spring moves the arm down the slot to a position where the arm can be removed from the slot in the underreamer body. A lower sub assembly is affixed to the underreamer body to prevent premature back off of the lower sub. Jets are disposed on either side of the underreamer to remove cuttings from the well bore. The tool is adaptable in the field for several hole sizes by adjustment in the length of the stop block and the angle of the flat on the top side of the key.

  • Patent number: 6378632
Abstract: An underreamer opens a borehole below a restriction that is larger than the restriction itself. The underreamer includes cutters which engage the formation by traversing outward and upward. The force pushing the cutters to the extended position is supplied by a piston built into each cutter support. Pressure acting on these pistons comes from the pressure differential between the annulus and drill string during circulation of drilling fluid. The cutters are supported on both sides of the cutting structure by arms that are supported by and in sliding contact with the body. A spring opposes the upward and outward motion of the cutter mechanism and returns the cutters to their collapsed position in the absence of differential pressure. The body of the tool incorporates by-pass ports for transmitting fluid through the tool to the remainder of the bottom hole assembly.

  • Patent number: 5361859
Abstract: A drill bit for use with earth drilling equipment, the drill bit having a body and movable cutting members or blades variably positionable between a first position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is generally equal to or less than the diameter of the drill bit body and a second position in which the diameter defined by the cutting members is greater than the diameter of the drill bit body. The second, expanded position is assumed by the cutting members when they are in contact with the bottom of a hole and are thereby urged upwardly relative to the bit body. The first, retracted position is assumed by the cutting members when the drill bit is being tripped into or out of the hole and, because the cutting members are essentially retracted relative to the bit body, the drill bit does not become jammed downhole. A fixed-blade adaptation of the invention is also contemplated.
