Abstract: An improved hole opener assembly for horizontal drilling is disclosed that is less prone to failure as a result of cone arm break out or pocket side wall fracture. The interface between the cone arm and the pocket employs a key and slot configuration with a tighter fit than between the arm and the pocket to reduce the stress on the pocket side wall during drilling.
Abstract: This invention includes drilling assemblies, drilling reamer arm assemblies, and methods of drilling. In one implementation, a drilling assembly includes a cutting head apparatus configured to cut into earthen material as the cutting head apparatus is rotated. A drive shaft extends aft of and is configured to rotate the cutting head apparatus. A plurality of reamer arm assemblies projects radially outward of the drive shaft and are mounted for rotation therewith aft of the cutting head apparatus. Individual of the reamer arm assemblies include a radial inner portion extending radially outward of the drive shaft. A radial outer portion connects with and extends radially outward of the radial inner portion. The radial outer portion includes a cutter. At least one breakaway retainer fastens the radial inner and outer portions together and restrains the radial outer portion from moving relative to the radial inner portion towards the cutting head apparatus and the drive shaft. Other aspects are contemplated.
Abstract: A rotary cone drill bit for forming a borehole having a one-piece bit body with a lower portion having a convex exterior surface and an upper portion adapted for connection to a drill string. A number of support arms are preferably attached to the bit body and depend therefrom. Each support arm has an inside surface with a spindle connected thereto and an outer surface. Each spindle projects generally downwardly and inwardly with respect to the associated support arm. A number of cone cutter assemblies equal to the number of support arms are mounted on each of the spindles. The support arms are spaced on the exterior of the bit body to provide enhanced fluid flow between the lower portion of the bit body and the support arms. Also, the length of the support arms is selected to provide enhanced fluid flow between the associated cutter cone assembly and the lower portion of the bit body. The same bit body may be used with various rotary cone drill bits having different gauge diameters.
Abstract: An improved raise boring bit to enhance cuttings removal and prevent accumulation of cuttings on the body of the bit, which utilizes a pair of radial rails and a plate connected with and strengthening the rails while defining an opening for the flow of cuttings beside the stem and the radial rails during boring. Cutter mounting means are disposed at intervals along the radial rails to permit the flow of cuttings between the rails and the mounting means. At least one wing extends radially from the plate for supporting additional cutters, a vertical stabilizer roller is mounted on the end of the wing and struts extend between adjacent sides of the wings for stability and support.
