  • Patent number: 6119797
Abstract: The invention discloses a single cone earth boring bit which is adapted to be used for boring in oil fields, mining and geological prospecting. The single cone earth boring bit is composed of a bit body (1), gauge blocks (2), active cutting gauge teeth (4), passive gauge teeth (3) and knobby cone (6) etc. On the knobby cone (6), there are inserted wear-resistant teeth intermittently or successively, so as to make the wear resistance of the bit cutting system to be matched with the service life of the bearing. At the same time, gauge blocks (2) are provided on the bit body which may be directly made on or welded to the bit body. On the gauge blocks (2), there are inserted common carbide or wear-resistant active cutting gauge teeth (4) and the passive gauge teeth (3) to enhance the gauge-protecting effect of the bit. Such a single cone earth boring bit can significantly increase the footage of the bit and reduce the cost for drilling.

  • Patent number: 5961185
Abstract: An improved disc type rolling rock cutter, and novel cutterheads employing such cutters. A rock cutter with an improved, simplified structure, with compact bearing, and smooth, rounded blade shape is disclosed. The design incorporates a cutter ring, bearing, and seal into a single cutter ring assembly. The cutter may be assembled and disassembled for rework by a single worker with simple hand tools. Replacement of worn out cutter rings is done quickly and easily by removing the old ring assembly and then sliding a new ring, bearing, and seal assembly on to the cutter shaft. This simplified assembly is achieved by using a comparatively large shaft which is normally in the range of 40-50% of the ring diameter. The shaft design is sufficiently robust to permit a cantilever mount of the cutter. The unique configuration allows 30,000 lbs. or more thrust to be applied to a 5 inch diameter miniature disc.

Abstract: An improved rolling disc type cutter, and novel cutterheads employing such cutters. The cutter includes a washer surface and a cutter ring assembly. The cutter ring assembly further includes an annular cutter ring with an interior annulus defining portion and an outer ring portion. A bearing assembly substantially fits into the annulus of the cutter ring in a close fitting relationship with the shaft, so that the cutter ring may rotate with respect to and be supported by said shaft. The bearing assembly includes a bearing and a seal which fits between the washer surface and the cutter ring to form a lubricant retaining seal for the interior annulus portion of the cutter ring. A retainer assembly is used to retain the cutter ring assembly on the shaft, and a cap seals the interior annular portion of the cutter ring assembly so that, in cooperation with the seal and the cutter ring, a lubricant retaining chamber is provided.

  • Patent number: 5147000
Abstract: A drill bit for use in drilling a well bore comprises a main drill body adapted to be rotated about a substantially vertically disposed axis of rotation and having therein a duct extending longitudinally along such axis, for supplying a drill fluid under pressure to the well bore. At least one generally circular, rotatable cutting discs are mounted on the outside of the main drill body at equally spaced locations, with the cutting discs each having cutting elements disposed in a ring-shaped array. Each of the cutting discs has an axis of rotation disposed at an acute angle to the vertical centerline about which the main drill body rotates. The axis of rotation of each cutting disc is slightly offset laterally in a rearward direction from the centerline of the main drill body, thus to cause the entire bit to be placed in a non-equilibrium position with the rotation of the main body enabling the cutting disc to be positioned to be particularly effective and aggressive in cutting the well bore.

  • Patent number: 4936398
Abstract: A drill bit for earth boring purposes includes a drill bit body which is rotatable about a drilling axis, a single cutting member mounted rotatably on the body and a counter-reaction member also mounted on the body. The counter-reaction member extends partially downwardly from the body and includes first and second outwardly exposed surfaces.
