Patent number: 4284150Abstract: A soil sampling device adapted to be mounted on a motor vehicle. The soil sampling device includes a tubular probe which is operated by means of a hydraulic cylinder and piston. A mechanism linking the probe with the piston causes the probe to swing from a horizontal position to a vertical position and then to move vertically downward into the soil. Upon withdraw from the soil the probe is caused to move vertically upward until clear of the soil and then to swing to a horizontal position with the end of the probe adjacent a sample collecting container. A second hydraulic piston and cylinder serves to eject the soil sample from the probe and into the collecting container. The controls for operation of the device are adapted to mounted at the vehicle operator's station.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Inventor: D. Lynn Davis

Patent number: 4279300Abstract: An applicator for applying chemical treating fluid to equipment, such as pump-sucker rod equipment, being run into a well includes a housing capable of being mounted on a wellhead and having an opening to permit passage of the equipment therethrough. A series of circumferentially spaced apart nozzles are arranged in the housing for directing flow of the chemical radially onto said equipment. Valve means are provided for controlling the flow of the chemical to the nozzles. A movable actuator which operates the valve means has a first position at which flow of the chemical through the valve is prevented and a second position at which flow of the chemical through the valve is permitted. The actuator includes spring means for urging the actuator to the first position thereof and means supported on the housing, which is responsive to the weight of the suspended equipment in the well to move the actuator to the second position thereof.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1980Date of Patent: July 21, 1981Assignee: Exxon Production Research CompanyInventor: Michael J. Patent number: 4263975Abstract: The bottom annular flange of a bearing sleeve which is displaceable with respect to a support frame is applied against the ground surface around the zone of a hole to be bored. A cylindrical cutter placed around a boring mandrel attached to the operating rod of a jack is downwardly displaced only at the end of travel of the jack, driven into the ground with the boring mandrel and forms a cylindrical recess around the upper end of the bore-hole. The portion of soil which is trapped between the cylindrical cutter and the boring mandrel is removed automatically after simultaneous withdrawal of mandrel and cutter. A post can be driven into the bore-hole, cement or concrete being then poured into the cylindrical recess.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1979Date of Patent: April 28, 1981Assignee: Societe de Gestion J-L. Patent number: 4179856Abstract: A sleeve assembly for sanding a piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder or the like comprises a rigid annular outer member, a resilient annular intermediate member adhesively secured to the inner surface of the outer member, and an abrasive annular inner member adhesively secured to the inner surface of the intermediate member for interference contact with the piston rod. The sections of the annular members each have complementary nonaxial end configurations to prevent scoring of the piston rod during axial movement. Clamp means releasably engages the members around the piston rod. In some embodiments, bracket or angle bar means are utilized to releasably secure the sleeve assembly to structure at the end of the cylinder. In another embodiment, the sleeve assembly is releasably clamped directly around the end of the hydraulic cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1977Date of Patent: December 25, 1979Assignee: The Texacone CompanyInventor: John H. Patent number: 4143720Abstract: In a system for obtaining core samples from a submerged bottom a core barrel and holder assembly attached at its upper end to a cable is dropped through the water from a floating vessel, and after the barrel has penetrated the submerged bottom a winch on the vessel is operated to raise the assembly into a guide tube carried by the vessel in an over-water position. An operator on the deck of the vessel swings the barrel through a vertical slot in the guide tube and as the cable is released slowly the barrel is guided to a near horizontal position so that the core sample can be removed from the barrel. The holder tilts within the guide tube during this operation but is prevented from passing through the slot, thereby preventing the assembly from swinging as a result of wave action on the vessel. The system can be used to take samples while the vessel is being propelled through the water and during rough weather.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1977Date of Patent: March 13, 1979Inventor: Sam M. Patent number: 4117896Abstract: In abstract, a preferred embodiment of this invention is a soil sampler having a specially designed tip for easy penetration, a movable slot cleaner for cutting away surface soil that clings as the sample is taken, and depth markings for allowing accurate gauging of the samples. This invention also includes handles that are off-set 90.degree. from an open soil slot to allow the sampler to be placed horizontally on the ground with the slot upright without danger of tipping.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1977Date of Patent: October 3, 1978Inventor: Jerome B. Patent number: 4114701Abstract: A drill rod table bushing arrangement which supresses drill steel whip while drilling under high thrust loads, and also prevents drill cuttings from accumulating on the drill table. A power operated ball wedge is operative to engage a drill rod, while high pressure air jets prevent drill cuttings from getting into the bushing.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1976Date of Patent: September 19, 1978Assignee: Chicago Pneumatic Tool CompanyInventor: Edward J. Patent number: 4098360Abstract: A soil sample core extraction tool having a handle member on which is movably mounted a soil probe member and a clutch arranged for selectively preventing movement of the soil probe with respect to the handle member. By sequential actuation and release of the clutch, the depth of the probe member into the soil being sampled becomes independent of the position of the handle member relative to an operator, thus permitting the operator to manipulate the handle member from a convenient position during the entire sampling operation. A cleaner is removably attached to the handle member for facilitating removal of a core sample from a sampling tube of the probe member and permitting subsequent lubrication of the sampling tube in order to eliminate resistance of the tube to insertion into a soil being sampled.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1976Date of Patent: July 4, 1978Inventor: James M. Clements

Patent number: 3968846Abstract: A wiper for scraping debris from between the convolutions of an earth boring auger. The wiper comprises a "daisy-like" wheel having radially extending peripheral fingers successively engagable between the convolutions of the auger to scrape debris therefrom. The wheel is mounted adjacent the auger for rotation about an axis disposed in a plane generally normal to the longitudinal axis of the auger whereby, when the wheel is engaged with the auger, rotational and/or longitudinal movement of the auger functions to rotate the wheel to successively move its fingers into and out of engagement between the convolutions of the hanger. An hydraulic cylinder is provided to selectively move the wheel into or out of engagement with the auger.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1975Date of Patent: July 13, 1976Assignee: M.G.B., Inc.Inventor: Gordon M. Patent number: 3934661Abstract: A dust cap particularly for use with an overhead rotary hammer. The dust collector is a cup-like member with a bellows side wall, integrally formed in one piece. It has a thickened neck to fit on the tool shank below the chuck, thereby encompassing the chuck and the lower end of the anchor. Dust is efficiently caught in that the bulk of the dust passes through the anchor and chuck, and then directly into the dust collector cup, plus most of the dust outside the anchor is also caught as it falls around the anchor. The bellows side wall facilitates changing tools and removing anchor ends.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1974Date of Patent: January 27, 1976Assignee: The Black and Decker Manufacturing CompanyInventors: William D.
